A man was arrested outside the Silk Mercer pub in Devizes during the early hours of Sunday after a 27-year-old man received serious eye and head injuries.
Officers were called to the pub in St John's Street at about 2.15am after reports of a disorder.
The injured man was taken to Great Western Hospital in Swindon for medical treatment where he remains.
A 20-year-old man from Frome was arrested on suspicion of GBH without intent. He has been released under investigation.
Detective Constable Nick Ryan, from South CID, said: "A number of people were in the area at the time of this incident and we have spoken to several witnesses, however we would be keen to speak to anyone else who may have witnessed the incident.
