RED Nose Day is just two days away and as usual will feature a whole host of whacky events where everyone throws their inhibitions to the wind to raise money for charity.

From sitting in baths of baked beans to dressing up and baking cakes the biennial fundraiser that was launched live on Noel Edmonds' Late, Late Breakfast Show on BBC1, on Christmas Day 1985 from a refugee camp in Sudan has raised in excess of £1 billion for good causes.

On February 8, 1988, Lenny Henry went to Ethiopia and celebrated the very first Red Nose Day Telethon appeal.

Over 150 celebrities and comedians participated and this year big names such as Ed Sheeran, Joanna Lumble, Nicky Minaj, Martine Martine McCutcheon, Russell Kane and Katy Brand are just some of the celebrities who will continue to raise funds for the numerous charities that help children in need and tackle worldwide poverty.

Over 130 teenagers at Commonweal School have already got involved in the fun by producing a music video for Comic Relief.

“As a school, we do our best to support charity events and offer help to those less fortunate than ourselves," said Josie Williams, community arts development and press liaison officer.

"And taking part in Comic Relief is a fabulous way of doing this as a whole school project to raise money.

The idea was the brainchild of an informal chat between Nick Weaver, performing arts technician, and me where we were discussing the idea of getting a few original songs written within the school.

With Comic Relief coming up in the diary, it gave us the perfect output for the project and within hours, Nick had written the most fabulous song with an incredibly catchy chorus and heart-felt message,” said Ali Sutcliffe, head of performing arts.

Ali then set about selecting various students to sing lines of the song and invited Commonweal Collective to join together to sing the rousing chorus. The recording process took around a week with Nick, students and staff nipping in and out of the recording studio when it was available. The whole track contains over 150 voices including staff and the senior management team and instrumentalists from our C6 Performing Arts course.

It will soon be released on Youtube. Donations can be made via the Comic Relief link.

The track is also on the school’s charity CD containing all original songs written and performed by staff and students at The Commonweal School. The CD will go on sale shortly for £5 with all profit going to Comic Relief.

Comic Relief will be shown on BBC on Friday.
