A KEEN team of netballers have set the ball rolling for this summer's answer to the Corporate Games.

Staff at RWEnpower have entered a netball team in the Challenge Swindon - Festival of Sport.

And they are among the first to register for the community sports event, which has been organised by Swindon Council.

Team organiser Kim Starsmeare, of Stratton, said: "I took part with colleagues in the Corporate Games last year and we really enjoyed it.

"I hadn't played for 20 years and had forgotten how much fun it was."

Since starting to play again last year, the 42-year-old now practises most weeks with a squad in Abbey Meads.

And she has encouraged nine other colleagues to follow her lead and take part in Challenge Swindon.

In the run-up to the event, they have already started honing their techniques at the Link Centre, in West Swindon.

"Three members play in the Swindon & District Netball League, but the rest of us are still a bit rusty from our schooldays," said Kim.

"The main thing is we're taking part and having a laugh.

"It is a very social sport and a great way to get exercise."

Netball is just one of more than 20 different activities spread over 12 leisure venues across the town as part of the sporting extravaganza, which takes place on the weekend of June 2 and 3.

From basketball to squash, swimming to hockey, golf to football, there is something for adults of all abilities.

The event will be followed by a Get Active Week, which is open to all from June 4 until June 10, featuring activity taster days with local clubs, schools, businesses and community groups.

Coun Justin Tomlinson, cabinet member for leisure, culture and recreation, said: "Challenge Swindon - Festival of Sport is all about teamwork.

"This makes it ideal for friends, families and work colleagues who fancy getting together for some exercise and lots of fun."

Many of the Challenge Swindon sports are team events, so people across the town are being encouraged to get together with friends, family and work colleagues.
