LOVERS of Scalextric were in model car heaven during one of the biggest events in the country.

More than 500 people descended on the Oasis in North Star yesterday for the fifth annual swapmeet held in Swindon.

A 50ft long drag strip was one of the star attractions, which tested people’s reflexes, while there were also about 45 tables from dealers and collectors offering browsers and visitors all kinds of goodies.

Organisers hailed the swapmeet as the biggest and best yet.

“It’s been really successful - I’d say it was busier than last year,” said Robert Learmouth of Priory Vale. “All the circuits have been really popular. I’ve had lots of positive feedback.

Members of the public were quick to praise the event - growing in reputation each year.

Tom Coates, 12, of Peatmoor, said: “It’s fantastic to come along and have a go on all the different circuits. The time trial was a lot of fun but I just missed out on winning it. An event like this is brilliant on your doorstep.”

A digital circuit, which allowed more than one car per lane so you can overtake, a rally track and a matchbox-sized circuit were all just some of the working exhibits on offer.

Old collectable model cars from the 1960s, models from James Bond and Top Gear and Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren Mercedes from Formula One were snapped up by racing enthusiasts.

Darren Goodwin from Chippenham, brought along his son James, seven, for the first time.

James said: “I liked it here and I have lots of new cars to play with at home.

“Scalextric is the best - it’s really good.”
