Right then, ladies and gents, thanks for your company this afternoon.

Same time next week for the next Question Time. In the meantime, there's a game at Stevenage on Saturday to focus on.

See you later all.

I think we are all a BIT MENTAL but some are more mental than others. In my infinate wisdom I know who they are too. Whats up with Benno - is his head still hurting from last Saturdays volley? Do you think PDC is surprised by the superiority of League 1 over League 2?

I was told last night that Benson did not have an injury, but others have suggested he had a dead leg.

I will try to clear this up in the next couple of days.

I think Di Canio was always aware of the quality of League One.

2:15pm

No, even if I have been targeted a few times on there. It certainly was unusual for a forum to be calling for a journalist to be sacked! It's part of the job, though, and we all enjoy an opinion.

2:14pm

Only if the riders were available. I would quite like to see them parade the trophy at the County Ground before the Villa game. Would be great to give them a cheer there. Great achievement.

The embargo was enforced as a result of the full fees for Collins and Troy. Is the paying in full a new ruling introduced by the league or is it something Town should have been aware of ?

Evidently it was not something the club was expecting, although I'm sure there must be precedent.

Is there a chance Andy Williams will be fit for Villa? We really need him. Without a fully fit squad I really do fear for us, especially at right back without Nathan. I just hope that a capacity crowd isn't kept quiet, would be such a waste of a full house.....

As mentioned before, I would be surprised if he was fit but we can always keep our fingers crossed.

2:08pm

It's a dificult situation to be a part of. On one hand I understand what he's saying with the injuries he's having but on the other it may be best him keeping schtum and getting the club winning games as he has for most of his time here.

2:06pm

Both Williams and Alan Navarro have been seeing a specialist in Italy for treatment. I don't think either will be fit for Villa. In fact, it would be a pretty fantastic result if any of the injured players return for that game.

2:05pm

I don't think so. Could be shown up with that prediction but I don't really see the point. Di Canio and his agent identify players and work within a budget dictated by the money men. Someone in between would be a bit of a nothing position.

Do you think SWP is leaning more towards a new ground, rather than developing the County Ground?

The fact that the embargo was only imposed because the board alerted the authorities to its over expenditure, suggest that the auditting is not overly rigourous, and other clubs may be getting away with it. Fair assumption ?

PHIL

I can't be sure but perhaps. Although I imagine projections have to be submitted by the clubs month on month anyway so doubt anyone would get away with it. If they did, what would the point have been in introducing financial fair play in the first place.

Don't you think it's about time Pdc stopped moaning about the Embargo and worked with whaat he has???
All we read is he works 60 hours a day and has had so many injury problems. Not a mention of some of the duff players he signed and money wasted.
No it is time for him to become a real Manager and get the best out of his squad god know's it is big enough

STUART RANDALL

I think it does not portray him in a good light when he rants but you can understand his desire to support his squad in the wake of a spate of injuries.

On the flipside, he did sign the players he does not think are good enough at present so he shouldn't be complaining.

There are aspects of his management which will evolve and adapt, I think man management has to be one of them.

1:52pm

We in the media are not privvy to training sessions but the players we see around the place have the same attitude as last year. Work hard, aim to win, stay focused.

Isn't it a little early in the season to be talking of players being burnt-out (Ritchie).
Could it be too much training as playing two games a week should not be beyond them.

Perhaps, but there have been an awful lot of games in a short space of time. Burn-out is excessive but there could well be an element of fatigue when you consider how much physical work they get through in a week.

Sam we're playing Stevenage on Saturday, how would Paolo manage on their playing Budget of less than half of ours and last time I looked at the table they were second!do you think he has mismanaged our budget???

I don't know the exact size of Stevenage's budget but agree it may well be significantly smaller than Town's.

I don't think he has mismanaged the budget, I think he needs to give the players he has brought in a chance to prove why he brought them in in the first place.

In this situation I think anyone would want to bring in loan players to cover positions affected by injury.

Do you think the board are trying to quietly reign the manager in and curb his excesses, especially around transfers etc, and do you also think given the right offer they may let Ritchie go in January as a cash builder to re enforce the team as a whole.

I think that is a possibility, although the embargo is doing that for them.

In terms of any player, I'm sure if an offer comes in that is too good to be turned down it will not be turned down. That's business.

Sam, it was your opinion I was looking for, as it seems a great many fans think he should be given a chance or shipped out and save on the budget.

I can only go by what the manager has said on it. I would like to see more of him, he is a very talented player and exciting to watch. He also provides a different option but, for whatever reason, Di Canio does not want to use him. It is a real shame having pursued him so intently over the summer.

Do you think it would be a good idea for our manager to take some lessons in PR from our Chairman, so as to remove the negative vibes he seems to create around himself.

I think how he is it what makes Di Canio who he is. In my opinion he does need to contain his passion and anger on occasion but again, it's hard to fault a man who has been pretty successful since he arrived.

Maybe he requires a variety of vibes around him to keep him ticking. Pure speculation mind.

After the game last night PdC said: "The club knows my idea that I would love to have an academy like Crewe. They have five or six 18-year-olds they can bring in that are strong and skilful. When our squad is thin like it is now I could play a few youngsters too and it would help."

He's always seemed uninterested in our youth setup, and on poor terms with Paul Bodin. Is this fair, and have you heard his views on the youth structure he favours?

It's an interesting question. He has given chances to Nathan Thompson, Leigh Bedwell, Miles Storey, Louis Thompson, Aaron Oakley and Billy Bodin during his time in Wiltshire. On that basis he appears to support the system.

However, I do not think he gives the youth set-up the chances it perhaps warrants given the players who have come through the ranks over the course of the past decade.

On reflection, I wouldn't call him totally uninterested in youth - but in general he has relied on them as a last resort. That is not fair on a dedicated youth system.

I believe JWray became something of a mentor for PDC and probably kept him from his own worse excesses in berating everything in sight after a defeat. Is it possible he will need somebody other than the chairman to do this going forward?

I think the board and the manager have to work together to come to a satisfactory arrangement.

The board have to recognise the character of the man they have in charge, the manager has to evolve in his position to recognise that people change in any industry let alone football.

I don't think Di Canio is oblivious to this, in fact he said as much on Monday, and there should be no need to use a mediator between board and manager.

What kind of message does that send out?

Hi again Sam.

We spoke last week about PDC's future at the CG, given that he would no longer enjoy the 'close protection' of Mr JW.

I know a lot of what Paolo says in his always frank post match interviews (rants some may say) may be 'lost in translation'. However, he has said some things recently which are worrying. He has said (not verbatum) that the club doesn't care. That there has been a change in direction. Basically that he is being told one thing while in practice things have changed.
What's your take on the situation at SN1.
Those who like a conspiracy theory may conclude he is being pushed out rather than be sacked so that he doesn't have to be compensated. Any thought?

Thanks again RB

I think Di Canio's press conferences are hugely different pre-match and post.

The emotion of a match seems to take over and leaves him with a lot of passion burning by the time he comes out to face the media.

I think he is simply very frustrated at not being to do things as he would like. I don't think he is being actively forced out but I can understand why conspiracy theorists would come to that conclusion given the circumstances.

What I'd like to ask though is: Whilst I know I'm not alone in starting to get concerned at the continuing rants and the wording, is there poetic licence in the articles or is it verbatim?..also is there an opportunity for getting someone to 'represent' Paolo in the immediate post-match interviews.
...
Whilst I love the openness and honesty I do believe they are starting to become slightly embarrassing and more damaging in recent weeks - I don't hold that PDC is totally happy with the change of board and is maybe holding some things back - equally I don't believe that the board are being truly 'open' in their statements.

I can assure you that Di Canio is quoted ad verbatim. Of course we cannot include everything he has to say as a standard press conference lasts between 10 and 45 minutes and we do not have the space to print a transcript.

I think it would be an awful move to put someone up to represent the manager at a post-match press conference. Think of the negative messages it sends out.

As a manager, I am sure Di Canio will adapt over time.

Several questions....

1 - When will the manager man up and take responsibility for the team. As a fan I am getting sick of hearing a post match rant naming players individually and singling them out for poor performances. An example of this is last night where it was our captains turn...a man that is an excellent footballer but too small to be a centre back and he should be in the middle of the park adding strenth to our attack. We got away with this last year because of his skill. This level is finding out his limitations in this position.

2 - If we need to free up some budget, then send back Bostock as he's clearly not the player PDC wants him to be, no point having him here.

3 - recall some of our loans, risser/rooney can both do a job at this level, why hasn't this been done?

4 - given the tie up with our directors and betfair, why aren't we exploiting sponsorship opportunities (2nd kit/training kit) or at the very least installing 'tote style' terminals around the ground of which the club take a percentage on?

5 - old fashioned question, but stud length seems to be a problem and quite often we see both home and away our guys falling over on the pitch having slipped. emphasis seems to be on bright flashy colours and not practicle tools that enable the job to be done.

Personally, I am not keen on the post-match dressing-down of individuals. I think as a team it is fine but when it gets personal it is a little unnecessary.

Having said that, as long as the manager continues to have success it is hard to question his methods or logic. Time will tell in that respect.

I don't know the ins and outs of John Bostock's loan deal but I would presume both parties would have to agree to him going back to Tottenham. Even so, he is the only option to fill in for Ferry or Miller in the middle of midfiled (with the exception of Louis Thompson).

My understanding is that Oliver Risser will be at Stevenage until January whatever. Luke Rooney is due back at the club soon.

Andrew Black no longer has connections to Betfair after selling his stake in it some years ago. I'm not sure how the club would take a chunk of a bookmaker's revenue.

Boots now are very light and designed to help players move quickly over the turf. Pitches are also watered to make a game quicker. Yes, they fall over sometimes. I'm not sure it's a major issue though.

It is my understanding that the budget Sir William Patey referred to is to be used solely if the club is in a position to seriously challenge for promotion in January.

Financial sense says don't through that money all at once in case it all goes horribly wrong.

Sam can you please clarify the rules around the 65% wage cap?
.
1) Is it Wages only or Wages and Fees as reported in the BBC etc
.
2) What does the League recognise as Income?
.
Is Equity investment included? (If so would an injection lift us out?)
.
Is Cup gate receipts included? (I thought that was excluded to prevent a unfair advantage via the luck of a draw - i.e an away game at Man U gives a team an extra £500k to spend!)
.
3) What is included in Expenditure?
.
Is it base Salary only or Bonuses too? (If so how do you budget a goal bonus? or win bonus?)
.
Do signing on fees count?
.
Do Transfer fees count?

It is wages and fees regarding the football side of the business.

An equity investment would lift the club out of embargo but that would require investors being happy to pump it in.

Gate receipts would be included in the projections to a certain point but a big cup draw (presuming Villa are beaten, which is a massive task) would help significantly as it would be unbudgeted revenue.

I believe the expenditure to be the budgeted salary/transfer payments etc that have been planned by the powers-that-be in their projections month by month.

Remember it was the Town board that alerted the authorities to the fact they were due to go over the 65 per cent limit after they saw where their projections were headed.

With leaving Richie on the bench last night are we now thinking that he has had another fall out and that he is bullying the players?

Nick

If money comes into the club in equity that could send Town out of embargo.

Central midfield is key for me. Only Tommy Miller and Simon Ferry are available. With eight games in four weeks, with the amount of work those two get through, they desperately need a deputy.

I don't think he has had a falling-out with Matt Ritchie - he's openly said in recent weeks that he feels Ritchie is burnt-out. He gave him a rest and it worked, when Ritchie came on he made a huge difference.

SeanG92 says

The big question for me is-

What is the reason for us breaking the 65% threshold?

The club went over the 65 per cent limit because they were told to pay the full fees for James Collins and Troy Archibald-Henville up front by a tribunal panel.

The budget, to the best of my knowledge, had taken in an initial payment and instalments over a period of time. Being told to pay the full whack sent the projections over the 65 per cent threshold.

Another view says

Does the embargo really matter?
Surely we have enough to work with?

The bench last night showed there is still talent in reserve e.g. the commentators were impressed by Miles Storey's development since he last played.

I would think there is harm in a certain amount of experimenting in the first half of the season. It's not squeaky bum time yet!

I think there is plenty around the club to be a comfortable midtable League One side.

But the injuries will affect things, and with so many games coming up in such a short space of time fatigue is likely to kick in.

If the club are targeting promotion this year then it would be convenient for the option to be there to be able to strengthen the squad.

However, having brought in so many players during the summer it is arguable that the manager should be able to work with the tools he has got.

Davidsyrett says

What realistically do we have to do to get out of the transfer embargo? Are we looking for new sponsorship, or bringing in any other new revenue in the near future? Could the embargo have been avoided, if so whose at fault for it?

Realistically the club needs either a boost in revenue - a win in the League Cup and a big boy in the quarter-final, an injection of equity - which is unlikely to take place until debt has been written off or a sale of players - which cannot happen until January.

As mentioned, revenue could occur through progression in the League Cup and the board are actively looking for new investment.

Effectively the embargo could have been prevented but I don't think it's fair to single out anyone for blame. The tribunal panel's decision to ask for the fees for James Collins and Troy Archibald-Henville in full up front pushed projections over the edge.

5 - old fashioned question, but stud length seems to be a problem and quite often we see both home and away our guys falling over on the pitch having slipped. emphasis seems to be on bright flashy colours and not practicle tools that enable the job to be done.

I have always been a great supporter of any manager and am often accused of putting PDC on a pedestal for worship but I do believe in 100% support.
---.

Do you know whether the wages of the players we have loaned out are being paid by the new clubs or are we still footing the bill.

If we bought back loan players would this increase our expenditure and push us further into the embargo?

After the game last night PdC said: "The club knows my idea that I would love to have an academy like Crewe. They have five or six 18-year-olds they can bring in that are strong and skilful. When our squad is thin like it is now I could play a few youngsters too and it would help."

He's always seemed uninterested in our youth setup, and on poor terms with Paul Bodin. Is this fair, and have you heard his views on the youth structure he favours?

Sean, according to the League's reply to me, you add together all player running costs - to get the total "wages" - then see what percentage that figure is of total operating income. The tribunal fees and other transfer fees do come into the calculation but not as wages. Instead they reduce the operating income. Say income is £5m, player costs (wages etc) are £2m, transfer fees paid are £1m. Income becomes £4m after deducting the transfer fees, so the SCMP percentage is 50%. It's interesting that the League has chosen to do it that way. If the transfer fees were included in wages instead of deducted from income, in my example the SCMP percentage would be 60% - I think!

Are pay offs a part of the 65%?...

And the answer was YES..
And that is were a huge part of the budget has gone...
All the players that were payed off were PDC signings..
Plus were still paying PART wages for Caddis Risser Cox Rooney and anyothers if there are any

Another view says...
9:36pm Wed 24 Oct 12

As much as some people on here want to hear the last of Caddis' name, I think it's too easy for Paolo to brush their bust-up under the carpet. Who's willing to bet it won't happen again if he's got away with it once?

Remember it wasn't just the issue of taking paternity leave, but he was the players' spokesman complaining about the non-stop training and few days off. Was his 'casual' attitude to getting fit for the new season a symptom of the pressure he was under as the spokesman?

His brother and friends in Kilmarnock(where my family live) say he was upset how it worked out.

Of course none of us know the full story, and Caddis has a lot of PDC's hot headedness, but as many are now saying on here, we badly need some proper man-management at the club. Maybe part of the new chairman's job is to bring some pressure to bear with his well-honed diplomatic skills?”

Romain - don't start spouting that cr@p about the pay-off taking up most of the budget
.
Hardly any have actually been paid off this season - Cibbo cancelled his contract and Connell and Smith's will be minimal if anything at all as they went to other clubs
.
All the "big" pay off would have been in last seasons accounts / budget
.
It was revealed today that Rooney cost £300k in total
.
So when you add him to the £180k of Connell, Smith and Cox it shows that most of the net expenditure of £506k was on actual transfers
.
Don't forget that also includes Wes's fee and INCLUDED 4 PAY OFFS - so shows how small they can actually be!
