Di Canio hails 'amazing performance'

Swindon Town's Miles Storey scores his second against Aston Villa Swindon Town's Miles Storey scores his second against Aston Villa

SWINDON boss Paolo Di Canio was proud of his players’ ‘amazing performance’ despite their heartbreaking 3-2 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa in the Capital One Cup last night.

Substitute Miles Storey dragged Town back from 2-0 down in dramatic fashion late on with two goals in three minutes, only for Belgian Christian Benteke to grab a 90th minute winner to deny Swindon their fourth higher-division scalp of the campaign.

Despite the defeat Di Canio was full of praise for the way his players coped with the Premier League side, and believes it stands them in good stead for the future.

“It is disappointing but what they have done made me proud as a manger because the second half was a spectacular game, and they played with discipline and quality without worries,” he said.

“We created eight or 10 clear chances, but they are two leagues above us and have the quality, the delivery from Ireland and then Benteke scored in the six yard box.

“But I told them it is important we keep going, and after the Stevenage game this is an amazing performance and I am very very happy.

“We dominated completely and they went out of half way five or six times, but we were 45 minutes in their half playing quality football with discipline, so I am very happy.

“Obviously it leaves a bad taste because one minute earlier we should have scored with Andy Williams, because if we score it would have been amazing.

“But I was very happy to see my players not go blurry after going 2-0 down, and I think very positive for the future.”

Di Canio was impressed with the impact teenager Storey made after coming on, but is keen to keep the youngster’s feet firmly on the ground.

“He has to improve a lot because he didn’t even know the pace of football, but he is a good prospect.

“He is very intelligent and worked hard in pre-season, and he is now a different prospect.

“He is without long hair now and he is a professional and a very educated guy, but he has to work hard because he is at the base of his improvement.

“He will improve and understand more, but obviously the people do not now have to think he is Rooney.

“Maybe he will play half an hour or 20 minutes in League One.

“He is not ready for the top level but one day probably, probably, but he must work very hard.”

Meanwhile, tonight is a big occasion for Swindon Town’s youth team players as they begin their FA Youth Cup campaign against Sholing at the County Ground.

“It is a showcase game for the young lads to play at the County Ground, and I know they are here every day and watch most of the first team games, for a lot of them this will be the first time they have played here,” manager Paul Bodin said. “I am sure they are eager to get on the pitch and show what they can do, and Sholing will be out to show how good they are too.”

Swindon Supermarine are also in action this evening in the final of the 2011/12 Wiltshire Premier Shield against Salisbury.

The game was carried over from last season due to fixture congestion, with the clash being switched to Supermarine’s Webbs Wood Stadium home.

Great comeback, almost dared to dream we could do it and maybe should have, but they took their chances and we let a few go by the wayside - no shame in that performance at all.

PDC's appearance on the pitch last night gave me a chuckle, just drinking up the adulation of the fans. Top night and hats off to Storey, looking more and more like having the finishing touch we need. Collins did well holding it up, Ritchie was always looking for the ball and gave them a lot of problems - shame Devera had a bit of a nightmare but take nothing away from any of them, all put in a hundred per cent.

Very pleased to read PDC is praising the team. Much more the type of comments a manager should make after such a game.

Sure we would like to have won but at least we played well and should entice a few more "floating" supporters to come and see more games.

Well done everyone, but especially, well done Miles!

If you're good enough, you are old enough. Miles looked good when Bodin introduced him to the team and he certainly looks good enough now judging by last nights effort.

Shows you dont always have to go out and buy/loan in talent - you might actualy have something just as good on your own doorstep.

Miles deserves a start on Saturday, as does Louis Thompson..

maybe slightly harsh on Joe? He is a centre half playing out of position and furthermore was up against a player with bags of pace and international experience!

Hold your heads up high boys you gave them a game they won't forget for a while!

That really was a great performance, especially the second half fight back. We had them on the ropes for most of it. Heart break at the death, but the Lads did us proud.
Nice to see some of the Wembley day trippers back. I wonder how many of them will be there on Saturday?

Even in the first half, I thought we were on top! I could not believe how easily Collins was able to win the ball from so many of Wes' long goal kicks, control it and then lay it off. I thought it was his best performance for us so far. I also thought Flint, McCormack, McEveley and Ferry played out of their skins and Storey, a star in the making. The rest were merely brilliant! Great atmosphere and what a roar when the equaliser went it.

Just took this off a Villa Forum......

"Just got back to Bournemouth.

A wins a win, we're through so that is all well. Benteke played very well.

However in the 2nd half we were truly shocking. Apart from the goal that was one of the worst Villa 2nd half performances I have seen for years. They we were all over us like a rash. They had so much space it was as if they were the senior and more skilful side..

Ireland remains an enigma - he can undoubtedly pick a pass but he bottled out on at least three challenges. Our midfield is really poor but our defence isn't much better.

Anyhow onwards & upwards. We live to fight another day. If we get to Wembley with this squad I will be ****** amazed!"

Harsh maybe, but true, as you say he is not a very good right back and he is obviously better when he is played in the middle of defence. Lambert saw this as our achiles heel and exploited it to their benefit. If Thompson had been fit I don't think they would have got the chances they did.

Never mind he did his best, but getting in a player to challange Thompson has to be a priority.

Really harsh on Devera. Rodge well said on Collins, thought he was outstanding last night. Many around me not so sure but hey we all see it differently.

I thought Ferry was average at best first half, didn't track Ireland for their first, gave ball away cheaply too many times but he was a completely different player second half.

Williams and Collins up front with young Miles and Benno as replacement's. Think we will really start to see how good these two are now they have a bit of confidence and a run in the team.

Even more convinced after last night we'll win the league.

Still buzzing after that match - pain to lose but when the team plays like that what can you say? They were magnificent. Yes a few players are weaker than others that don't always get a start, but every single one of them played their hearts out, no passengers or shirkers. Si Ferry for me was one of our best performers - his vision and passing set him apart and he makes such great runs, let alone his work rate. It was great to see Andy Williams back, he is so direct, strong, fast and skilful - him and Miles Storey look like a frightening combination. If Paolo is determined to protect Storey and bring him in gently, then get Collins/Benson to run the opposition ragged first half and then bring Miles on when they're tired second.

I always think we look better at the back with Aden Flint playing, even though he can be frustrating at times. We do miss Nathan Thomson and shame John Bostock wasn't fit as he is right up there with Ferry in my view - I'd start them both in preference to anyone every week. Matt Ritchie played well last night too, great to see him returning to form. Raffa was terrific when he came on too - I would prefer to see him start most weeks, great player. Must stop prattling on! Roll on Macclesfield. COYMR!

I Like Devera but was out of position and out with the fairies last night, Roberts worked hard but have bruises on my thighs from punches after each time he went forward. Why wasn't DeVita on much earlier? He was fantastic because he is a 'fantastic' player. Williams looked electric, he was more dissapointed with that final touch than anyone after his great run through. Storey was so quick when he came on their defence must have shat themselves. Am so hopeful after last night's performance, the confidence it will give them will enable them to terrify league one opposition now. The momentum may be starting to get into full swing and the manager has had two interviews in a row with praise and more composure.....things are looking up.

Great night , great to see us compete so well the only difference was the way they took their second goal thats Prem for you . In the final 5 mins we could see our back row drifting deeper and deeper , could we have held out in extra time ? well we won't know now but a great nights entertainment , congrats putting the extra bass speakers out that tinney thing we have is barely audible . it just gets better and better . agree with all of that except i tend to think it is right at this stage to give Storey 30 mins here and there and gradually he will become a starter but at 18 plenty of time. Collins was excellent tonight anyway, so Williams and Collins to start with Storey to come on last half bhour when the defence is tiring will be frightening for many defences!! Would love to see Bostock and Ferry together! Ferry runs and runs and does win a lot of the ball as well so if Bostock (who isn't small) can be a bit more physical in middle of park could have 2 excellent playmakers out there. COYR!

Stigger,

Completely agree, and in addition I said about Ferry & Bostock together ages ago and got shot at dawn on here for suggesting it. They are too much alike I am told, we need this and that I was told. My thoughts are they have got to be better than Miller& Navaro. But there you go, seems we all see it a bit different, but we all support The Town, and that is what is important.

I reckon Stigger's hit the nail on the head re Bostock - "if he can be a bit more physical in the middle of the park". It might be that he just doesn't have that bit of steel in him and that's why he's not playing at the top level right now. Cracking ball player though.
Another thought - if Ferry was more physical he probably wouldn't be down at this level either. Maybe we just have to accept that the only way we are likely to get the full package from any player is by finding one who is on the way up and blossoms with us at the right time - like Charlie Austin.

Don't think it was harsh, he was beaten all ends up on numerous occassions - I'm not blaming him, just said he didn't have a particularly good game. I'd give ten out of ten for effort for everyone but that position was exploited time after time. Doesn't seem like a natural right back (although he's played there a fair bit), and we could really use someone to fill in for Thompson whilst injured, as though Devera can do a decent job at right back, he'll come unstuck against trickier players.

Another great thing to see, Alan McC taking the pressure off the defence and meaning less hoof balls from Wes by running the ball out of defence - when he gets on the ball and runs he seems to scare the life out of the opposition, if only cause it's so unusual to see a centre back play like that. Would like to see him do more of that, definitely has it in him.

I have still got a big smile on my face from last night. Here's my thoughts for anyone who can be bothered to read it :D
I felt the main difference between the teams was that Villa had 2 international strikers who were more clinical. Benteke looks one hell of a player.. he always seems to have a yard of space around him when he is on the ball. We passed it as well as they did, out musceled them in the 50/50 challenges and limited them to 5 decent chances.

There are a lot of positives to take away from the game and bearing in mind how poor league 1 is this season (How are Creepy Crawley second?!) we should be confident in pushing for promotion.

The good:
Strikers: All 4 strikers bullied their opponents and maintained possession well. Williams changed the game in my opinion when he came on. His combination of pace and technique was wonderful to watch. I can't believe he has been miling around the lower leagues?! Storey is definately one to watch. He has pace, power and good movement. If he keeps his head down and works hard he could be the finisher we need. I believe Stuart peace was present last night.. i bet he didn't expect to be watching such a cameo from a young Swindon player..

Strength: on numerous occasions we bullied Villa off of the ball. I sat near a Villa fan and he was sh1tting himself at 2-1 up when we stole ball and broke with 5 players in the box.

Ferry: Seems to have found an extra yard or two of pace and is always looking to create something. He gives it away sometimes but i would take that over a player who simply passes sideways every time. My MoM over the 90 mins

Macca: love his direct runs through the oppo. True commitment and passion.

Di canio: I have never seen a manager at STFC whose substitutions actual have an impact (1994 onwards). In the recent days of DW or MM you felt they were making changes to simply give players a rest. I think Paolo is too tough at times with the team but you can't deny he is a bit special and genuinely wants success here. I hope all fans get behind him even when we have the odd poor result as i would take the current set up over anything i have seen in the past 10 years

The not so good: Defensively we don't look as settled or strong as last season. Both full backs looked uncomfortable at times and flint again made a rash challenge early on (al la leon clarke vs Scunny)...However it was a very tough ask for Devera to mark Agbonlahor. I think Richie should have provided more cover.

COYMR!
agree with all of that except i tend to think it is right at this stage to give Storey 30 mins here and there and gradually he will become a starter but at 18 plenty of time. COYR!
Stigger, Completely agree, and in addition I said about Ferry & Bostock together ages ago and got shot at dawn on here for suggesting it. They are too much alike I am told, we need this and that I was told. My thoughts are they have got to be better than Miller& Navaro. But there you go, seems we all see it a bit different, but we all support The Town, and that is what is important.
Sare Bleu what heresey, what treason! are you telling us some posters have had the temerity to disagree with the "mighty" Wizman? What do you suggest shall we hang them all from Banbury Cross?
Malkym, How predictable, on my back again, can't leave it alone can you. Got other names as well ? I was agreeing with the chap for Gods sake, agreeing. Quite a few of us have said its a decent idea, but I quite expect you to disagree with that, just for the sake of it.
Nope -just on the rod you make for your own back sometimes :)
I agree with somebody and that makes a rod, well that is new. Just because I thought it was a good idea, along with others a while back, same again.

I admit some of my opinions may differ from yours, but I don't jump down your throat every time you say something. I'm still waiting for you to come up with something ORIGINAL. You are obviously an intelligent bloke so where is your STFC originality. I didn't have you down as a sheep just agreeing with everyone else, as that seems too simplistic for someone of your IQ.
Back to the game and I thought it was crackin' and I'm hoping for something special next Tuesday. A nice win to push us up the league would be most welcome.

Looks like we put in a fantastic performance last night. Was in Town until Monday and desperately disappointed not able to stay to see game.

Storey is really coming good. Paolo is right to try and protect him from too high expectation but I hope he plays him increasingly from now on.

And on the Paolo note I think he has been brilliant over the past week, good team selections, good post match comments etc.
