Fisher doesn't envy Shrivvy boss's position
6:00am Friday 2nd November 2012 in Sport By Ned Payne
John Fisher
JOHN Fisher has stoked the fires ahead of this weekend’s Highworth-Shrivenham derby by telling opposition boss Les Gill - ‘ I wouldn’t want your job’.
The teams meet in the second round of the Challenge Cup at the Elms tomorrow and Highworth manager Fisher, a former boss at Shrivenham, says he is quite happy to be in his current position.
Gill took charge of his first game last weekend after replacing the departed Michael McNally, and while Fisher commended the former Sanford boss for taking on the challenge, he believes Shrivvy will continue to toil in the Hellenic Premier.
“Shrivvy have brought in a new manager and he has signed some new players who will want to impress him, although they didn’t impress me when I watched them on Wednesday,” said Fisher.
“It’s a tall order for him, he’s got no budget whatsoever but still has to entice people to go there.
“It’s going to be a hard job and quite truthfully I wouldn’t want it, I’ve got enough of a job myself, but at least I have a budget to work with.
“He’s managed at Wilts League level and done well, but I think they are going to struggle.
“Fair play to him for taking it on, he obviously believes he can turn it round.”
Highworth and Shrivenham might both have made disappointing starts to the season and be on the same seven-point total in the league, but Fisher says his side are expected to progress on Saturday.
“At the end of the day, Highworth have always been favourites in this derby, we’re classed as favourites this time and I’m aware of that,” he said.
“We’ve got to go into it expecting to win, but the way things are at the minute, anything can happen.
“I just want a good performance and a win. That would just start getting us into the sort of pattern where people can start believing in themselves.
“If you can’t get yourself up for a local derby then you shouldn’t be playing, and I shouldn’t really have to say much at all beforehand.”
Fisher has a full squad for tomorrow’s clash.
Elsewhere in the competition, Cricklade are taking on opposition from Division One East as Penn and Tylers Green come to Stones Lane. Lambourn face a tough task as they welcome Slimbridge.
