PAOLO Di Canio will target two central midfielders in the emergency loan window now Swindon Town’s transfer embargo has been lifted, with one new face potentially arriving in time for the weekend clash with Walsall.

Although the Robins manager is only likely to be able to bring in three players on temporary deals with the amount of money he has to play with, following an equity investment by majority shareholder Andrew Black, Di Canio has been stripped of options in the middle of the park following injuries to Alan Navarro, John Bostock and Giles Coke earlier in the campaign.

With the news that Tommy Miller is also set to spend a significant spell on the sidelines – six weeks as he recovers from a quad strain – Di Canio is left with only Simon Ferry and 17-year-old second-year scholar Louis Thompson to fill in at the heart of the side.

Therefore, he admitted he will have to prioritise bringing in reinforcements in the middle as soon as possible.

“Already it was the plan to bring in a central midfield player, now if it is possible even two,” said the Italian.

“Already it was the plan before, when we had Tommy and Louis and Simon Ferry fit. The people should not think now that Louis Thompson can play regular football every game, every three days.

“He was fantastic (on Tuesday) because it’s a different level of intensity and he was brilliant. Now I know I can count on him more but you need someone you can rotate.

“The problem is, in two weeks’ time we will have Simon Ferry all empty or nearly injured of maybe injured – I hope not but this is normal.

“For any athlete it is difficult, you can imagine the ones who have to be in midfield and shoot up and down and across for 95 minutes.

“We are with one okay, and then we are talking with another two players.

“I was happy with the way the way the team performed so I don’t see why I have to change a lot but with this guy it can happen in the next two days, if something goes the way we want.”

Di Canio explained that Miller picked up his knock inside the first 30 minutes of the Capital One Cup clash with Aston Villa last week but continued to play, exacerbating the problem.

He said: “It’s a dead leg but a big dead leg, there’s damage to the fibres. There was a lot of damage, strain of the second or third level. It came from an impact he had in the Aston Villa game after half-an-hour.

“I had to thank him for his courage and for his adrenaline because he kept going for another hour, made the damage bigger and the haematoma is all around the quad and he will take six weeks at least.

“That is a big loss.”

don't know anything about kissock for maccs but he dominated midfield against us. Mind you he should have seen red, best midfielder I've seen from an away team. May have been just good that day?

That highlights exactly why myself and a few others have said we need loanees earlier
.
As we pretty much had no other options Miller played on and is now out for 6 weeks!
.
This is the point PdC is raising about Ferry - with only him there it is a risk a similar thing could happen to him
.
Also this shows it is not the training as Thompson, Navarro and now Miller were all knocks picked up in matches

Silver lining to the embargo must be that Miles and Louis have put down their markers. I agree they need to be carefully managed and it is also logical that CM takes priority. Hopefully we can hold on to something for the January window and also have to budget for any injury to Wes. Much more like my world now -counting the pennies. Greening would have to agree to a haircut before Paolo let him in so can't see it happening. (especially if we had to pay)

need to look at the profile here, candidate needs to be currently out of favour with parent club or returning from injury, some physical presence, most important, must be able to play head tennis at a decent level and hit 40 yard passes into touch to get the advantage for throw in's, would also be an advantage if candidate can launch long throws to test 6' 6" goal keepers and defenders, We don't play tippy tappy so anyone that want's to keep the ball on the ground need not apply.

I think we are hoping for an upwardly mobile nibble footed, well skilled, experienced mid fielder built like a brick outhouse, that comes with his clubs blessing and they will pay the wages from now till when ever. Pretty big ask really but no harm in having a wish list I suppose. Good luck needed and even more so to keep him injury free for the duration of his loan.

LOL, I thought that was asking just a bit too much ! I like the comment thou. Sounds like we're on the same wave length. Quite surprised an announcement hasn't been made already. I would have thought he would have had a short list. I suppose the short list is fine, its just getting the leverage to get the players away from their clubs as their injuries and fixtures start to build up. One thing is for sure, we'll be very lucky to get anyone really decent in January at any sort of realistic price.

First of all a huge thanks to Mr Black for the equity investment. Although it is obviously in his interest to spend a touch more in order for us to get promotion and thus gain more revenue ourselfs. But all the same, thanks very much.

Cm is obviously the priority, 1 senior CM and a 17 year old isn't exactly ideal for a team looking for championship football!

Not sure who we could bring in, but I am sure that Paolo will know who he wants.

Hopefully have someone by Saturday. COYR

Bostock was back in training today, not sure how long it will take to be back at match fitness.

Young Mr Madine from Wednesday in his way here - had some problems but definitely a goal scorer, and would be the biggest player on the pitch in most games (unless up against Peter Crouch or Jan Koller!)
