5:46pm

Thanks to everyone for all your comments on another good afternoon for Swindon Town. No midweek game this week, but we will be back for Saturday's home clash with Yeovil.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

5:42pm

Simon Ferry got Town off to the perfect start today, and is targetting more goals.

Swindon Advertiser: Swindon Town's Simon Ferry

SIMON FERRY

"It was a good win, and we knew it was going to be hard, but we got off to a good start and I caught it sweet.

"I didn't know I could hit the ball like that, and two is the best I have got, and I hope I can build on that.

"We have quality on the wings and they put good balls into the box, and I should be getting on the end of that and scoring more goals."

5:39pm

John Bostock returned from injury, and was pleased to be able to give the travelling fans something to cheer about.

Swindon Advertiser: Swindon Town's John Bostock leaves the field at Stevenage with a groin injury

JOHN BOSTOCK

“It was fantastic today to reward the fans with three points, and it was a great result.

“Simon led us really well today and got on the scoresheet, and the armband is bringing out the best of him.

“I am enjoying playing, and if I can get forward a bit and get a run of games hopefully I can score a few goals.

“Central midfield is my favourite position, and I am enjoying playing there and I want to work on my tackling and my heading.

“I did my rehab at Tottenham and came back and finished it here, but I thought I would be back next week, so it was good to play today.

“The fans have been amazing ever since I came here last year, and it is great to win for them today.”

5:37pm

Manager Paolo Di Canio has just spoken about potential transfer targets, and suggested with his tongue firmly in his cheek that he hadn't heard of rumoured target Gary Madine.

Swindon Advertiser: A CRITICAL CONDITION: Paolo Di Canio

PAOLO DI CANIO

"It is difficult now because the damage was done, and the only team which couldn't bring any club is Swindon.

"I have targets, and when they don't have desire they won't sign, and I prefer to keep the money there.

"Now it is difficult to sign quality players, although someone will come, but one we like flew away.

"You are not lucky to get the one you want with the right desire.

"The damage is done, not only by injuries, but not the right fitness and wanted too much money.

"I don't know Gary Madine, and Riley is a young right back.

"I know every player from League Two to Premiership, but I do not know all their facts."

Great result but not a great game Williams and Collins atrocious. Walsall had nothing to offer but still made Wes make two good saves. Devera & Ward solid but not under any great pressure.
Worrying that our strikers are so off rheir game. But we'll. take the three points. Roberts much better today.

5:17pm

Manager Paolo Di Canio has just spoken to the media.

Swindon Advertiser: IT TAKES TWO: Paolo Di Canio

PAOLO DI CANIO

"We dominasted and they didn't have one clear chance and we created five or six. A draw would have been good for oiur situation, and the players came out and won the game, which was a fantastic job," he said.

"Every time you have to start well, and today more than ever, and today we wanted to emphasise their bad moment and we thought if we came to push forward we could damage them.

"We created a chance in a typical way, and Simon struck into the net and it was a good start.

"Every person and every person can improve. Simon is a mature guy but he can still improve.

"He proved he can do this, and maybe six or seven goals in a season.

"He led by example, but today we had almost 11 leaders on the field.

"The back four were the best, and they gave us the chance to stay in the game and made no mistakes. The second goal made the game safe."

DANGER MEN

WILL GRIGG

Swindon Advertiser:

With Florent Cuvelier injured, Walsall’s main goal threat this afternoon is striker Will Grigg, who has netted four in his last eight games. The 21-year-old’s movement can cause problems, and he will be supported well by Jamie Paterson. In total, the Northern Irishman has scored 11 times in 36 starts since coming through the Saddlers’ youth set-up.

ADAM CHAMBERS

Swindon Advertiser:

Chambers began his career at nearby West Brom before moving to Sheffield Wednesday where he played with Walsall boss Dean Smith. The two linked up again at Leyton Orient, and Smith ultimately brought him to the Bescot last July. The midfielder is good on the ball, and can roam across the pitch to cause problems.

ANDY BUTLER

Swindon Advertiser:

The Saddlers skipper was earmarked for the Premier League during his time under Brian Laws at Scunthorpe, but things didn’t quite work out like that. He eventually moved to Huddersfield and once again looked to be moving upwards, but his career stalled and he moved to the Bescot. Despite not living up to his potential, Butler is still a quality defender, and is capable of keeping the opposition strikers in his pocket all afternoon.

One man who has left Swindon Town in the last 24 hours is winger Luke Rooney.

The man signed from Gillingham in January has joined Rotherham on loan. Here Paolo Di Canio explains that Rooney does have a future at the County Ground.

“He’s a good, talented player. He finds difficulty in this moment under me because my football is expensive - up and down, up and down - it is difficult for him but he is a very good, talented player," he said.

Swindon Advertiser: BREAKTHROUGH: Luke Rooney celebrates his opening goal against Crawley

LUKE ROONEY

“At the moment the difficult is, with all the three wingers I’ve got and the selection I make for the bench it is crucial for me to cover a few places.
“I have versatile players who can cover left-back and right-back so it’s difficult with injuries.

“In the future I don’t know, but it’s obvious that if he has a chance to play in some place it’s better. If you don’t play football, that can hurt a player especially him. He is a very sensible guy so he needs to play."

BREAKING FASHION NEWS

Paolo Di Canio once against opts to don the green jacket this afternoon. Seems like the brief experiment of the red anorak has been abandoned.

2:29pm

THE MANAGER – DEAN SMITH

Swindon Advertiser: Dean Smith

DEAN SMITH
Born in West Bromwich, Smith started his career with the Saddlers as they were relegated from Division Three in 1989-90. He made 142 appearances for the club before being sold to Hereford, and was captain as the Bulls slipped out of the Football League. He then moved on to Leyton Orient where he made 309 appearances, scoring 43 goals, and then moved to Sheffield Wednesday under Chris Turner. He suffered relegation yet again at Hillsborough as the Owls slipped into Division Two, before he left at the end of the season to spend one more year as a pro at Port Vale.

Swindon Advertiser:

SMITH IN HIS PORT VALE DAYS

He soon returned to Orient as Youth Team boss, and then became assistant manager under Martin Ling. He attained his Uefa Pro Licence in 2008 alongside Roy Keane and Brendan Rodgers, but departed Brisbane Road the following year along with Ling. He became Walsall’s head of youth in 2009, and became caretaker manager in 2011 following Chris Hutchings’ sacking. He saved them from relegation in his first season, and has become something of a draw specialist ever since.

Smith signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract in October, keeping him at the club until summer 2015.

2:18pm

A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS

There are no direct links between the two squads today, although Miles Storey was brought up not far from Walsall, but plenty of players down the years have represented both clubs.

Swindon Advertiser:

WILLIE PENMAN

Willie Penman was on the bench for the 1969 League Cup win over Arsenal, and replaced John Smith ten minutes before the end of normal time. But he became frustrated with the lack of first-team opportunties, and made just one league appearance the following season, before moving to the Saddlers.

Swindon Advertiser: Two-goal Sam Parkin closes in on his former colleague Mark Rogers

SAM PARKIN

It is perhaps fair to say Sam Parkin failed to reach the heights of his time at Swindon after leaving the County Ground, and Walsall was one club he represented. He made 24 appearances for the West Midlands side, and only found the net three times.

Swindon Advertiser:

PETER EASTOE

Peter Eastoe was also prolific during his time at the County Ground, scoring 31 times as the Robins challenged for promotion from Division Three in the 1974/75 season. He scored 51-times for Town in total, catching the attention of bigger clubs, and he eventually moved to QPR. After switching to Everton and eventually West Brom, Eastoe joined the Saddlers on loan and scored once in six games.

Other players to play for both clubs include Tommy Mooney, Iffy Onoura, Fitzroy Simpson and Lee Homes.

2:11pm

Miles Storey could be forgiven for losing a little concentration this afternoon.

After the game today he's being chauffeured off to St George's Park in Burton to join up with the England Under 19 set-up.

In an exclusive interview with the Adver, Storey spoke of his emotions at the news.

“I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “There’s been quite a few injuries to the strikers and that so I thought there might be a chance but I’m buzzing.

2:08pm

ADVER CHIEF SPORTS WRITER SAM MORSHEAD:"So, just the one change for the Robins at Walsall this afternoon, but it's a big one.

"John Bostock, who ripped Stevenage to pieces two weeks ago, comes back into the middle of midfield alongside Simon Ferry. Let's hope he does the same to the Saddlers today.

Paolo Di Canio is very wary of a Walsall side who are having two months to forget.

Since beating Bournemouth back on September 29, the Saddlers have failed to win a match.

But Di Canio doesn't want his players taking victory for granted this afternoon.

“They are a group of young fellas. Sometimes you can pay the price. They have many young guys. But anyway they have a genuine enthusiasm, quality and desire," he said.

Swindon Advertiser: Tough task master Paolo Di Canio

PAOLO DI CANIO

"Obviously the next game they will give maybe 200 per cent but if that situation keeps going for the next two weeks, two months that means there is some problem.

“It’s obvious that we have to try to amplify the problem otherwise we are going to cause problems to ourselves.

“The problem is in the way we approach. If we don’t put pressure on the game then we will allow them to have the first chance in maybe weeks and we don’t want to do this.

“I have started persuading my players that it is not acceptable any more to fall in a trap that we go there and underestimate the opponents.

“We can’t. Now we have proved to ourselves that we can’t against any side.

“I hope that the next game will confirm we have improved in terms of professionalism because this is a part of the performance which is crucial."

I think we're all thinking the same thing...

1:41pm

ADVER CHIEF SPORTS WRITER SAM MORSHEAD: "It's been a crazy few days in Swindon Town Land.

"We've had various verbal volleys, from Sir Williams Patey and Paolo Di Canio, but at the end of a busy week everyone associated with the club is after one thing and one thing only - three points.

"It won't be an easy task against a Walsall side that will undoubtedly still be hurting from their 4-1 home defeat to 10-man Scunthorpe on Tuesday, but Swindon have enough quality - even in their depleted squad - to claim victory here this afternoon."

1:37pm

TEAM NEWS

Still too early for anything official but we're hearing John Bostock could come back into the Swindon squad this afternoon.

Whether or not he's fit enough to start is another matter entirely but his presence would be a huge boost to the Robins - and would add an extra option to manager Paolo Di Canio in the middle of midfield.

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the Adver's live coverage of Swindon's trip to Walsall in League One.

It's a battle between two of the most out-of-form sides - results-wise - in the division at present.

Town have tasted victory just once in their last seven outings, while Walsall haven't won since September,.

Something may well give this afternoon and you can follow the action here throughout the day.

Enjoy.

It's Xmas Eve in the STFC workhouse. Midnight strikes as players go about preparing for the big day, the match on Wednesday against Leyton Orient. Bostock is back at Spurs because he wants to attend church on Xmas day. Si Ferry has dressed up like a walnut whip, by tanning intensively and dying his hair white. Aden Flint is still out on the lash, already winner of the 2 yards of ale contest and going for a hat trick. He is still suspended after his fifth sending of of the season. PDC has erected a camp bed at Liddigton in anticipation of the extra training session planned for 4-30 am - just punishment for losing a goal to Tranmere in their 6-1 thrashing of Tranmere on Friday night. Town are top of the league, but its just not enough. the lead is only 3 points as the season is half way over. As the clock strikes midnight, PDC in his sleep is woken by a succession of 3 ghostly images. The first ghost is called Fabio -a stern and grey figure who reminds Paulo of his strict footballing up bringing. The second is called Harry, who reminds Paolo of the value of good human relations. Then just as the clock strikes 4, the ghostly presence of the knight of the black reality visits. Paolo is all of a sudden jolted into a surge of humility and fondness for footballers past and present. He rushes to the phone to call back Caddis. He gives all players a day off. Bostock is forgiven. Flint carries on in Old Town unnoticed. Simon Ferry tweets the players, a miracle has happened. Fodders shrugs his shoulders and dreams of the Palace of teenage cheer leaders. All is well in the workhouse. STFC are gonna win the league and PDC is a legend.

Hi Malkym yes very worrying but could be welcoming Gary Madine next week so hopefully this will shake them up a bit. Williams seems effected by the injury lay off and is no where near the level before the injury. Collins works hard but should be scoring more. Madine got 18 goals in Lg 1 last season so should give us a boost up front. Still a win is a win and 3 points is fab and see Wilson's lot lost their first game.

Concerned though our main strike force seems to be either unlucky or not quite up to it.

Still, we are in the play-off position even with all the problems we have had recently.

Not a bad place to be in the league especially given the raft of injuries we have endured lately. We have come through a tough period and not really fell behind the leaders.

I'm not so sure about Madine as the Police obviously think they have a case or wouldn't be charging him.

Just because we have funds available I hope there is not a massive urgency to spend, spend, spend. I still think it would be prudent to wait until January, which is when things become more clearer.

We have done well today and I hope our manager gives the team some plaudits and reward for their efforts. The front two continue to mis fire but given what they have come through with injuries etc, now is the time for them to re establish themselves not sit out games on the bench while some short term loan player is shown favour over them. I still think we will gain better form in the New year, but in the last ten we have won five, drawn three and lost two, not time to panic.

stigger says...

Just got back, Swindon fans great totally outsung them who i must say have a poor following, a great start and strike from Simon and although not the greatest of games or performances it was half decent and we were always in control. Wes made some good saves when called into action. Nathan continues to impress had their winger in his pocket and even when he gets things slightly wrong he is so quick to react that he more often than not wins the ball back. Jay Mac played better with his bandage on lol! some poor clearances in first half but he was much better 2nd half both defensively and going forward, as he himself has admitted his final ball could improve but was a threat today. Ward and Devera were great today, yes you can say opposition weren't great but you have to give them credit for not giving them a sniff. Hope any Ward doubters are beginning to realise that whilst he may not be the best passer (some more wayward ones today) he's a blinking good defender, he organises well, reads the game well has good positioning and wins the ball nearly all the time its anywhere near him. I've been one of the ones who has been hoping to see Bostock and Ferry together and they proved that it can work. Bostock has a great touch and always looks to pass it, and he has a very good range of passing, and this is so much better to see than hoofball. He gave a good account of himself, with one blip when he lost the ball in a dangerous position in the second half. Ferry was everywhere again and i must be boring with how i go on about how good i think he is, great goal as well (not often we say that with Si!). Ritchie worked very hard today and did plenty of good stuff but through no fault of his own he didn't often get the ball in areas where he could be a genuine threat, but still scored a cracking finish. Roberts, i have been one of his harshest critics, deservedly so IMO but he was SO much better today, couple of decent efforts some good balls in, some good trickery with the ball and he looked like the dangerous player i thought we were signing, i hope this Roberts turns up more often now. Collins i can't fault the work rate but just not happening for him at minute summed up for me when he got in the way of Ritchie attacking a header that could well have provided a goal. Williams i did not think was atrocious as some have said, he was beginning to show signs of getting back to his best, several times, twisting and turning and running at their defence and causing all sorts of panic. But and it is a big but some awful final balls from him and for his clear cut chance he needed to either shoot early or if he took it on as he did it needed to be lifted over the keeper. Miles did well when he was on and although there were some poor touches from him he also showed how his pace can be utilised to turn their defence and also linked play well quite a few times. Raffa was decent enough when on but cant remember anything significantky good or bad coming from him, same with Louis although he got stuck in well. Great result lets hope we can start sorting the home form out next sat. COYR!!

COYR!! stigger

Home in an hour......

Devera and Wardy done well today at the back and dealt with anything they needed to do.

Great to see Roberts have a much better game.

Should have been more but we were in control throughout.
So good day all round and should keep the moaners quiet for a few more days I hope.
6th place and in the "mix" so can't argue with that.

PS - Great early goal from Ferry but Matty's strike was a peach finding the bottom corners.
COYR'ds.

and paolo has done what a lot of people wonted...And that was to get on with his job, with the players that he bought to STFC

Darren the budget is the same as Danny Wilson had 2 years ago.... I think the squad we have is good enough to win the league.

That's my view and he didn't need to bang on about the embargo. But better to be out of it than not. 29 games to go. Long way!

Just back from the game. GREAT result and a very good performance. Particularly ferry, bostock and Roberts who all played really well. All the young boys played their part too... Only slight downside were the 2 strikers again... Williams missed a 1 on 1 chance but it was cutting in on the angle so not the easiest chance.
Just a word too on the town fans... Absolutely fantastic turn out & support, there must have been 1000+ of us there.... I'm absolutely buzzing.... My firsr away win of the season.....!! COYR

Good result today on face value - well done lads. Concerned though our main strike force seems to be either unlucky or not quite up to it. I wonder if we could or should loan Collins back to the Shrews if they want him, perhaps that might kick-start his goal scoring. Still, we are in the play-off position even with all the problems we have had recently.
Come on chaps. WE WON 2.0 AWAY FROM HOME.. No nead to stark attacking players is there IF paolo did that your be doing ya nutt in.. lol
I don't consider it an attack more of an observation and a suggestion.
Chish & Darren - Yes the result was good but I'm sorry the overall performance was still under par for the standards we know the players can achieve. Collins is simply not good enough - Roberts laid on a chance for him in the first half on a plate! he was unmarked with all the time in the world and he blazed it over the bar - for me he also wants too much thinking time as to what he wants to do next with the ball when he's got it. He's only scored 4!!! league goals so far and you cannot say Paolo hasn't given him a fair crack of the whip - he had an hour again today to show what he could do. Williams is a shadow of the player he promised to be before injury. We can be happy with our league position at this stage but please don't think it papers over the obvious cracks that are there and which will be revealed when we play the more capable teams.

Again like Chish its more of an observation of where we need to improve and you didn't have to be there today to know that our main front two are not cutting it at the moment and if they can't do it against the likes of Walsall then I'm sorry but it is worrying!

have to admit i would be playing Benson with Williams at the minute, i like Collins effort and i have seen enough to not right him off but cant see why Benno isn't getting more game time. With Williams i'm sure that with a bit more composure the goals would start flying in, shame he got injured as he looked to be building confidence then, he has all attributes to be a top player at this level though, sure PDC is working on his finishing in training. For me at minute it's Benno and Williams, with Storey and Collins on bench (when others are fit Rooney would not make bench for me as unlike the other 4 i haven't seen any positives)

Agree with that Mr Stigger and thanks for the great match report earlier. I thought that Ward had a great game at Bury and Bostock/Ferry has to be our best central midfield combination, especially if Simon gets the confidence to start scoring a few.

They say its the sign of a good team that can play badly/indifferently and still grind out wins. I still think this lot will go well after New Year, with a couple of new players in place. Williams and Collins yet to click, but they will given time, the two week break coming up will bode well for this lot.

He loves him like we all do and knows he can trust him to deliver the goals.

While he tinkers in the engine room!

In a perfect postion for an assault on top spot now,no rush,6 months to go yet.

Sorry Wiz can't see them scoring 20 goals between them let alone each! Collins missed a sitter(again!) yesterday
that was handed to him on a plate and he didn't even get it on target and williams missed at least one good chance.

They were ineffective against Blades because DW's lot made it difficult and other top half teams will prove the same, so if they can't cut it against Walsall they can't cut it! Rooney isn't the answer and young Miles as was seen yesterday is raw and still learning his trade. No wonder Paolo wants to get a loan striker in as soon as. Benno would have been a good shout yestrday as there was a lot of scrapping in their box.

Just my opinion I know but from others around me yesterday there were similar views.

Great result yesterday - isn't that five away wins out of six now?

Just shows that this 'long-term injury crisis' is nowhere near as bad as some make out. OK we have Navarro and Miller out, but I, like many others, would pick Ferry and Bostock as the two starting midfielders anyway.

McCormack's out, but that's a recent injury.

The main worry would seem to be the striker positions. Probably not the best options that we have up front, but they are Paolo's signings and we have to work with what we have. Williams scored 17 goals with Yeovil in League 1. Collins I'm not so sure about but he does more hold-up work.

What we need is a bit of stability in team selection. There are two places on the pitch where partnerships and developing an understanding are important - thecentre backs, and the strike force pair. Heaven knows how many different starting combinations we have had this season.

This League is wide open. While we've had a lot of disappointing results at home recently, we are still right in the mix. Season starts here.

STFC are gonna win the league and PDC is a legend.[/p]
Quality!! :-) ---. Williams should be looking forward to playing against his old team Yeovil next week. Think Paolo should get him to practice how to go round a goalie, lost count of how many times he's blasted straight at the keeper, hit the woodwork or over the bar. he should be in double figures by now if he could add a bit of quality to his finishing to go with his pace.,

Add to that the ghost of Connell raised its head recently and he scored an excellent penalty for Bradford against Wigan. so I'm told.

Like the sentiment, but wouldn't say it was ' deafeningly quiet' with 73 posts and unfortunately not all singing the teams praises.

Hi Jayden,

Yeh, you're about right there I must confess, and my post was a tongue in cheek reply to the one from Don.

Connell can't for what ever reason get in their first eleven but was our top scorer the previous season. he tried hard and always did his best, and without his goals we may have struggled on a few occasions. I don't see anything negative in that, he was a good bloke for us.

If you look back on this thread alone only yesterday I said,

They say its the sign of a good team that can play badly/indifferently and still grind out wins. I still think this lot will go well after New Year, with a couple of new players in place. Williams and Collins yet to click, but they will given time, the two week break coming up will bode well for this lot.

I only see that as being complementary, supportive, understanding the present situation and being positive about the future.

Perhaps I also didn't mention that this time last year we were far from brilliant but came good in the New Year and perhaps I also forgot to mention how we struggled then with the original pre season team until a few others like Fodders were brought in. Sorry about that Exmouth, very sorry. I still reckon we will go well in the New Year, but that isn't writing off all the games between now and then, far from it. I'm hoping for another six points this week alone with the home games with Yeovil and Brentford here at CG.

Great that the back four were praised yesterday by Paolo and even Wizard (joke before you jump) praises Super Sir Wes. Hang on that isn't four of Paolo's signings, with our Captain (another of his signings) to come back. Wait a minute didn't someone above also say they prefer Ferry and another of his signings Bostock in midfield.

Help help Paolo's players aren't all rubbish after all.....

Back to back to back promotions coming. Watching the birth of a managerial legend. (Isn't he already?!(clearly not)). Build a statue of him when he takes us to the Premiership.

LOL, I like it. I've been saying for a couple of weeks to cut some slack and things would come good, and I stick by that. Don't forget our present Captain is Ferry and with him we have done well, and I did say at the beginning of the season Ferry and Bostock together but got lambasted for reasons various.

I still reckon there are better things ahead for this squad and the upcoming break will serve us well. the best thing to come out of the embargo was the introduction of the youngsters and that has been priceless, so much so one is almost an international, now that can't be all bad can it ?

If we do make it into the Premiership will Grim still moan about the ticket price thou', lol.

Lots of tounge in cheek there Wiz .

Add to that the ghost of Connell raised its head recently and he scored an excellent penalty for Bradford against Wigan. so I'm told.
Do you think all clubs have supporters like these two?

We win away 2-0, paolo praises the players, but some people still have to scrap the barrel to have a dig.

Not having a dig at all, suggest you read my earlier posts.

Just saying players we have let go have some form still.
Wiz some times i can see why people have a go at you ,you dont mention the fact connell cant get in their first 11 and so what if he did score against wigan and as for thedon 69 clarke has had more clubs than tiger woods They are history now oh and Bodin had a shot in the poxford game and Rooney got took off at half time yesterday oh and Jake Jarvis set up a goal yesterday and on and on FFS

Quote,
If you look back on this thread alone only yesterday I said,

Wiz you ,as the saying goes say write what you want but make it clear if its tounge in cheek. For the record i think williams scored most of his goals last season after xmas .Dont get me wrong i havent been that impressed with them but i have seen enough to know that as indivduals they have plenty to offer but together they havent gelled as yet.Iam going to watch the youth game on tues.

Jayden,

Sorry if I didn't make it clear, I shall endevour to make it a bit clearer in the future. Can't do week day afternoon games due to my "work" here, but I'll be there in the evening as our daughter will be here with the missus.

The fact that I think we'll improve after Christmas and if Williams does better in the second part of the season seems to tally up. His energy and work rate are a good indicator to his good intentions. I admit to giving him some stick earlier in the season but my hope was his actions would improve to prove me wrong. I'm sure he will given the chance, but as I posted later this last week, benching him in favour of a short term loan player will do nothing for his confidence and self belief. Considering our lack of form, as we know it and judge it, we are not doing so bad, equal 5th and better to come. The future should be bright and very RED.

Add to that the ghost of Connell raised its head recently and he scored an excellent penalty for Bradford against Wigan. so I'm told.
Do you think all clubs have supporters like these two? We win away 2-0, paolo praises the players, but some people still have to scrap the barrel to have a dig. Clowns
Hi Jayden, Yeh, you're about right there I must confess, and my post was a tongue in cheek reply to the one from Don. Connell can't for what ever reason get in their first eleven but was our top scorer the previous season. he tried hard and always did his best, and without his goals we may have struggled on a few occasions. I don't see anything negative in that, he was a good bloke for us. Quote, If you look back on this thread alone only yesterday I said, They say its the sign of a good team that can play badly/indifferently and still grind out wins.
Blimey some are a bit touchy today!just telling the Fact's,Leon Clarke banging in the goals, our two signing's struggling to find the onion bag,I know it's painful, but that's the facts!!!!!!!!
Oh and Coxy f@rted before he scored the pen.for Forest yesterday too. I'm with Jayden, who gives a flying fig as to what former Town players are or are not doing its not going to make a blind bit of difference as to how our season pans out and this ..."if only we had so and so etc" is just pointless rhetoric.

And while I'm on my soapbox - all this defensive "I meant it as tongue in cheek" is to use the italian language theme on here a load of"b0llockus maximus" methinks - if it was supposed to be just that why not comment to that effect when writing the post rather than try and use it as a "get out of jail free card" when someone has a dig. Also some guys want to be "fence sitters" it seems to me and run with hare but also hunt with the hounds? spiking the manager and team one minute and lauding them as Roman gods the next.

My take on the front two as previously stated is Collins won't score 16 goals and definitely not 20 and neither will Williams because they're simply not good enough. Paolo must be thinking simialrly otherwise Madine wouldn't be linked with a loan move would he?

They are both strikers they are supposed to know what to do & how to stick the ball in the onion bag. Not one lower leagues striker these days seems to have a clue as how to go round a keeper, always blasting it and hoping it goes in when more often than not the keeper blocks the shot. Some of their misses to date would have been unforgiveable in a Sunday league game.

Rant over - hard hat & flak jacket on!

At the end of the day PDC picks Collins and Williams as his 2 main strikers not me. PDC bought them to STFC not me.. I only go to home games but like others and yourself. I am wondering why pdc stick with collins... Anyway all i was trying 2say was WE WON SO WE SHOULD BE HAPPY.. only aveing the crack
have to admit i would be playing Benson with Williams at the minute, i like Collins effort and i have seen enough to not right him off but cant see why Benno isn't getting more game time.
I think Paolo is saving Benno for the run in to the title. He loves him like we all do and knows he can trust him to deliver the goals. While he tinkers in the engine room! In a perfect postion for an assault on top spot now,no rush,6 months to go yet. Yoooouuu Reds!
PDC has slatted Benson loads of times saying that hes not good enough.SO i dont think hes saving him

HI Malkym you are probbly right about the two as i didnt go yesterday i have had a few days to get over their last outing (tue) i came away feeling the same about the 2 of them.Iwill give them to the early part of next year and see how it goes ,the thing that worries me is their is no understanding between the 2 and they just keep moaning at each other.Benson is better in the air but not brave enough in the box Storry is a prospect and i would like these 2 to start. As you say a new foward is needed as pdc has said as well .Iasked the question early on should s.ferry stay as captain what do you think ?

We win away 2-0, paolo praises the players, but some people still have to scrap the barrel to have a dig. Clowns[/p]
Not having a dig at all, suggest you read my earlier posts. Just saying players we have let go have some form still.[/p]
Wiz some times i can see why people have a go at you ,you dont mention the fact connell cant get in their first 11 and so what if he did score against wigan and as for thedon 69 clarke has had more clubs than tiger woods They are history now oh and Bodin had a shot in the poxford game and Rooney got took off at half time yesterday oh and Jake Jarvis set up a goal yesterday and on and on FFS[/p]
Agree that we shouldn't be crying over spilt milk as regards past players, although I have to say Clarke's finishing yesterday was impressive - coolly taken penalty with his right foot and then a confident strike with his left after a run through. He's a good striker at this level, works hard and has the physical presence to go with it.
.
I nailed my colours to the Williams / Collins mast some time ago. I still think they'll deliver the goods if they get the right service, which has certainly been lacking at home. Lumping the ball up to them is a complete waste of time. Malk, nobody seems to have said what sort of game we played yesterday. Did we hoof it, pass it or mix it up a bit?

You really are quite the negative poster! Really dont care about Leon Clarke...only a matter of time til he moves on again. I for one would be patient with Williams and Collins..and they will come good! They both work **** hard for the team and if they create for others until they score then thats fine by me!

was a bit of a mix, certainly less hoofball than recently, with ferry and Bostock that was always likely, but on flip side did not have Macca's ball playing at back and neither Ward nor Devera strengths lie in passing from back (although both defended very well).

Den to be fair we did keep it on the deck a lot more than against Blades but then we were facing two different types of playing style -Walsall to be fair also ried to play it on the deck and caused us some problems -Wes keeping a blank sheet at least twice. there was still a bit of hit and hoof and can't recall Wes starting a move from the back - other less senile attendees might be able to fill it in a bit more.

I've said my bit on W & C -lets hope they turn out better than bog standard!

stigger, jayden and Malk - thanks chaps. I did see that the first goal came from a long kick from Fodders.
.
I really hope we go back to playing football on the deck at home. I've spent a lot of time trying to encourage people to get out to the County Ground and support their own team. The likes of us will be there every week - but we won't give much incentive to the "undecideds" (or those who struggle to get there) by smashing the ball onwards and upwards at every opportunity.

I have to say that Williams and Collins certainly do put the workrate in and sure the rest will follow soon and bet they both have a better second half to the season. Williams has come back too soon me thinks but I suppose he can only get himself back into things by playing at the end of the day. In the old days we had reserve games for the players to get match fit especially after injuries so do not have that luxury any more. Not sure what has happened to Benson seems to have fallen out of favour but not up to last season's standards so may be Div 1 is much harder for him but he was excellent last season in Div 2. Would not mind nicking that Pope fella from Port Vale looks very much like Jordan Rhodes the ex Udders player who is now at Blackburn. We really do need another Charlie Austin or Coxy but these type of players are like gold dust so may be its time to check out the non leagues again. Fleetwood has been banging a few in at Luton and my old mate Ross Allen keeps banging them in at Guernsey 23 goals so far this season well worth a look.
