SWINDON TOWN: Loan options prove elusive for Di Canio
6:00am Monday 12th November 2012 in Sport By Sam Morshead
Swindon Town boss Paolo Di Canio
FINDING the right players to reinforce his Swindon Town squad is becoming a tricky task for manager Paolo Di Canio.
After finally being allowed to flex his muscles in the emergency loan market following two months of embargo, Di Canio has found that his main targets are no longer available and the options open to him do not present the sufficient levels of professionalism, commitment and quality that he requires.
The loan window closes in just under two weeks’ time but the Robins boss has stressed that he will not recruit simply for the sake of upping the numbers in the Town dressing room.
“It’s difficult now, the damage was done. If I’m not wrong, in the last two months the only team that couldn’t bring in even on £200 per week wages was Swindon,” he said.
“The problem is difficult. Now where are you going to find what you need for your cause? I don’t bring people in just to be there. I have targets. I speak to them and if I feel they don’t want to come here with desire and determination I don’t sign them.
“I prefer to go with my players – they know me and they work so hard. I prefer to keep the money there and not spend it. It’s not my fault. I claimed before to cancel the embargo, it didn’t happen and now it is difficult to find anyone of quality.
“Obviously someone will join us but the targets we had before, someone flew away because the number of players we selected two months ago was restricted to a few and then you have to be lucky to get the one you want with the right determination and the right price.”
Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Madine and Bolton defender Joe Riley are both believed to be targets of Di Canio, and the Swindon manager seemed to suggest that Madine was slipping from his grasp after the frontman scored for his parent club on Friday night.
“We ask for a player and they score and then they change their mind. Madine, who is he? I don’t know who he is,” he said, smiling from ear to ear after the 2-0 win at Walsall on Saturday.
“Joe Riley, if I’m not wrong, is a good right-back. Not because I have good information but I have to have a vocabulary about all the players. I know every single player from League Two to the Premier League but I don’t know who he is, I don’t know his face. We will see for the future.”

It was clear weeks ago that paolo would struggle to find any loanees with quality and level of fitness. \if he has his eye on such a player, why would they not be wanted by their parent club. If a RB comes (Riley) is he going to replace Thompson, don't see that happening, but we do need cover. In midfield we have Ferry, Bostock and Nat Thompson, all capablle players, so don't see him getting anyone better. Up front is where we have problems, saw Madine in the Friday game for Wednesday, looked OK, but if he is scoring goals for them, he's hardly going to come here.
I know you will all laugh at this, but Afinwaah was on another hat trick Saturday for Northampton, was nearly a town player after he left Swansea 5 years ago, but he was carrying an jnjury., I know he's big and really doesn't look like much of a footballer, but his goals per game is compareable with anyone and certainly more impressive than our mis-firing strikers.,

We will struggle to get anyone half reasonable in at this point, and every other team is looking to bolster their squads too - nice to hear from Paolo that he'd rather go with the players we have than blow the budget on players he doesn't think will do well here just for the sake of it, although some anti-PDC posters will probably choose to ignore that. We have a reasonable enough squad as it is, good enough to at least compete in this league. Can't help thinking that anyone we manage to bring in now, unless they're a real find, won't have enough time to gel or get to the required fitness levels. Some of the fringe players really should be upping their commiment levels as now is their chance to get a run in the side.
church of reading is the guy to go for,not in the reading side

its typical we miss out on a striker like madine, he'd have been ideal as a goalscorer with height option. his goal against boro was a mile offside by the way, it wasnt like he scored a wondergoal or anything so i thought we might still get him.

Not whilst he's at Tranmere on loan.
