SWINDON ROBINS: No contact from Robins - Schlein

A HOST of Elite League clubs have already registered their interest in signing the much sought-after Rory Schlein - but the Robins are not one of them.

The Australian announced on Friday he would be leaving Belle Vue after a difficult season at Kirkmanshulme Lane, with his average dropping by more than a point to 7.33 during a campaign disrupted by injury.

The Manchester club’s failure to pay an agreed transfer fee to Coventry has seen Schlein revert to being a Bees asset, and although the Brandon club have already publicly expressed an interest in bringing him back to the West Midlands, plenty of other sides have privately played their hand too.

Schlein’s low average could make him an attractive replacement for either Hans Andersen or Troy Batchelor if the Robins don’t get their wish of hanging onto their top two, but the 28-year-old is not expecting to end up at Blunsdon despite admitting it is one of his favourite tracks.

“I am obviously going to be looking for a new home for 2013, and the way my average is I think I am going to be talking to a few clubs,” he said.

“You only have to look at my results to see it is a track I ride well at, and I always get a little bit of a mixed reception there.

“We came close to signing with Swindon last year, but I think they will try and keep hold of the basis of their team from last year, and if you have a league winning side you don’t want to dismantle it.

“I don’t think they will be looking to sign too many knew names, but I am only a phone call away.

“The phone is ringing constantly at the moment, but I haven’t been contacted by Swindon and I couldn’t see myself there because they would be silly to break up the top three of Hans, Troy and Peter.

“There is a lot of speculation and there are plenty of Chinese whispers, but hopefully in the next couple of weeks I will know where I am going to be in 2013.”

Schlein worked with Alun Rossiter in 2010 when the pair were at Coventry, and although the Robins boss eventually dropped him from his side mid-way through the season, the Aussie would happily work with his former boss again.

“All of that is in the past now, and you all move on,” he said.

“We all fall out with one-another at times during our speedway lives, but I have guested for Rosco a couple of times during last season and it has been good.

“We agreed to disagree during that season at Cov, but at the end of the day we have worked well since and he is a great charismatic guy too.

“All I have to say is, if we ever ended up with me, Rosco and Troy Batchelor all in the same side it would be catastrophic.”
