TOWN boss Paolo Di Canio is a happy man after finally bringing in the reinforcements he has been crying out for in recent weeks.

The Italian concluded two-month loan deals for both Charlton midfielder Danny Hollands and Norwich striker Chris Martin yesterday, while Paul Benson left the club to join Portsmouth on a temporary deal until January.

The moves were Di Canio’s first since the club’s transfer embargo was lifted last week, and both players will be available for tomorrow’s game with Yeovil at the County Ground.

Di Canio was keen on signing Hollands in the summer but was knocked back by Charlton, while Martin will offer valuable competition to the likes of James Collins and Andy Williams, who have both performed well but struggled for goals in recent weeks.

In the case of Hollands, the Town boss was pleased to finally get his man.

“He is a player that was a target for me in the summer but Charlton didn’t give me a chance to bring him in, but now there is an opportunity,” he said.

“He has done something in this league and is of a good age to improve, and he played on the centre-left and he is a very good professional, and I think he can be an important player for us.

“The hope is we are happy with him and we can keep going, and he is the player I wanted already in the summer.

“He will improve his fitness level, but the fact he played already many games is not a guarantee he can be involved straightaway.”

The Town boss was also pleased with his capture of Martin, who he believes will compliment the strikers he already has.

“Not everybody will recognise him as the best finisher, but he is more a second striker who likes to play round the centre half, but he is a modern footballer.

“His first touch and he plays around the box, and he is a good player like we want to have.

“I told him straightaway, with smiling, sometimes he is a bit lazy but has good good quality, and it doesn’t help him find another way. This is typical when you do not have good touch like I used to have 200 years ago.

“Maybe sometimes you think it is enough, and we have had a chat with him and he is smiling. He is an intelligent guy and smiled to my point, and what he miss at the moment is match, because Danny played many games at a good level and Chris, not.

“It will take time for him to be fit like the others, and we will see maybe part of the game and then gradually.

“In a normal situation with many games in a row it will be different, but we play three games in nine days then we have two long weeks which will help a lot. That can give 25 per cent more fitness levels to the players and to my players I have already.”
