SWINDON TOWN: Williams set for two weeks out

Swindon Advertiser: Andy Williams will be out of action for at least two weeks Andy Williams will be out of action for at least two weeks

ANDY Williams will be out of action for at least two weeks with a knee injury, manager Paolo Di Canio revealed this afternoon.

The striker hobbled off just before half-time during the 4-1 victory over Yeovil on Saturday after a collision with Glovers goalkeeper Marek Stech and will undergo a scan later today in a bid to discover the extent of the damage.

However, Di Canio said his frontman will be absent for a fortnight, whatever the results, but the Swindon boss reported no new problems ahead of the visit of Brentford tomorrow.

“This afternoon he is going to have a scan and we will see what damage he has got. I hope it is the minimum, but even if there is nothing big it is a minimum of two weeks he has to rest," he said.

“The rest of the lads are okay so we’re happy. We’re not happy every time someone goes out with a problem but all the rest of the lads are okay.

“Tommy Miller and we know now Andy Williams are out. The others are ready for the game."

A real shame but given the style of 'play' from Yeovil we got away lightly as I expected more injuries. Its a shame Yeovil didnt concentrate on playing football as they might even have had a chance..

Big chance for Martin!

Would like to see Storey restored to the bench following this and for him to offer the fast forward option later on

Rooney should be there for if Collins is not performing as they are more like for like

As from the rest of Paolos reign, there won't be any 2 strikers guaranteed a place, but you have to think that Collins and Martin will be the main 2 contenders with Rooney and Storey fighting for that bench spot (altough PDC has often had 2 strikers on the bench tbf)

Given that Martin hasn't had much game time I could see him going with Rooney and Collins to start - purely as they're both match fit....yep and I do know they're too similar but do you want to chance Martin getting an injury because he's starting too soon?...I'd like to see him play regularly from mid Dec once fit.
---.
Storey not fit yet either.....so again an impact sub is best for him.

Martin is not unfit as such - as said just not PdC fit
.
He could easily come in and play without getting injured - all it would mean is he might start to flag in the 2nd half until he gets up to our level
.
Which is fine - let him do his business for 50-60 mins and then bring Storey on to frighten a tired defence with his pace

god i hope not!! Martin to start for me, with Storey and Rooney on bench. He played just over 45 on sat, if he manages 60 tomorrow all good. Hope Rooney proves me wrong but seen nothing to convince me yet. As for Willo, shame but will only be 2 games as we have 2 week break after sat, so hopefully he will be fighting fit come Doncaster

The guy is a PREMIERSHIP footballer - even if he has not been playing he should still have enough fitness from training to play most of a game if not all of it in L1

Granted he will be lacking match sharpness - which is what I put the shot he dragged wide down to after smart turn - but the only way he will get that is by playing
.
Same XI bar Martin in for Williams for me - no need to change it
.
Options then on the bench of Hollands RDV Storey and Rooney - with defensive cover from Troy and Thompson if required

I don't think many people in professional football would look at Martin and say he looks fit. 30 years ago he wouldn't have looked out of place but in today's game he's unusual - especially for a top flight player. I'm not knocking the bloke. He looks a cracking signing but let's not pretend PDC is the only manager who would want him to shed a few pounds.

I never understand this idea of planning when a substitution will be made. What if Martin (assuming he starts) is still going strong on the hour and giving the opposition a hard time? If he needs to get fitter but can last the distance, what better way to help him - and us - than to give him 90 minutes in the mixer?

I'd rather have RDV up front than Rooney any day of the week. Rooney has been very poor and lacks any sort of control would not get on the bench if I was managing. Martin can play no problem all this carp about not fit is ridiculous the boy will only be lacking sharpness but showed plenty of effort on Saturday. Collins need a run in the team now and I do feel Paolo needs to just ease up on the substitutions of some players and let them have 90 minutes as was proved Saturday with Collins non stop running and goal at the death. Connell suffered from Paolo's substitutions and I do wonder just how many goals the lad would have got had he played longer. The trouble with making all three subs too early leave's us wide open to late injuries. Paolo does seem to be improving in that area and I do hope he gives players more game time. Yes there will be times when he may need to make tactical changes especially if we were loosing the game but he has changed players for the odd mistake but let others get away with it. RDV was the most recent target when his shot went wide of the goal and Paolo summoned Ritchie to get ready and Raffa was walking off even before the lino's board went up. This is not good to see in my view. Only minor issues from our master and the Di Canio express is gathering pace yet again. Onwards and upwards and if we play as well as Saturday I can only see one winner tomorrow.

Roberts will start hopefully.

Nothing against RDV but an out and out winger he is not.
Last 2 games Roberts is starting to impress. More to come for sure.

Just think, a month ago we panicked as each of the strikers got an injury. Of course there's no good time to have an injured player, but now we have plenty of choices.

We are coming towards the start of the heavy pitches, so it's encouraging to know we are getting nearer to a full squad to cover for the inevitable injuries.

LR, Don't expect more than two changes, personally think we should play our best RB if he is fit, captain or not, mac cost us the goal conceded saturday and for me Thompson should play in his natural position and macca will just have to wait for his chance.

Also hope Bostock keeps his place and Danny Holland is kept in reserve, it sounds like Navarro is available, but quite honestly would prefer it if he takes a little bit longer to recover, as present encumbrants are doing fine.

I don't expect any changes (except for Collins) unless Paolo fears Macca may get done for pace.

Martin is big but so is Grant Holt, too much Turkey or too many of Delia's Desserts :-)

After Saturdays performance I would go with

Wes
Macca Devera Ward McEveley
Ritchie Ferry Bostock Roberts
Storey Collins

Subs
Martin for Storey
Hollands for Bostock
RDV for Roberts

I'd like to have Storey's pace on from the start to give that something different, but it could well be Martin starts, Storey comes on. Either way would work.

To split up the excellent Devera and Ward would be foolish, so Macca will prob stay at rb. Shame for Nathan.

Question is when does Ferry get a rest - Paolo has said he is concerned about flogging him to death - but we don't have that type of player to do all the running so would be a big loss if he didn't start.

Well JB that fad lad Martin will be ten times the player Benson is or was and if you noticed Benson played for Pompey Saturday and was given a poor mark of 5 in the papers. In fairness Benson's level is Div 2 and Charlton got rid for the reason that he is past it at this level. Talking about eating pies I get the feeling Martin will make you eat your words and in the name of good old Blakey from On The Buses "I hate you Butler".

Joey's new mix of groundbait seems to be working :-)

Must be the added sarcasm.

The Academy players from U13 up have got their own personalised fitness programs so I guess the first team must have. And no doubt it will be a lot more detailed than the Academy players programs

So did I JB -they didn't fight much did they - unlike some of the sparring on here lol!

We once caught such a load the Adver came along and took a photo of us nippers as we were then with this mass of skimmer bream - horrible slimy things as I recall - the fish I mean :)
