HANNAH Miley set a new European record as she charged to gold at the European Short Course Championships yesterday afternoon.

The Swindon-born flyer, competing in her favoured 400m individual medley event, clocked 4:23.47 in Chartres, France.

That was Miley’s third medal having previously won silver in the 800m freestyle and the 200m IM, making her the first British swimmer to win three individual medals at the meet since Susan Rolph in 1999.

In addition to her 400m IM exploits yesterday, Miley set a personal best of 26.22 seconds in the 50m freestyle to finish joint fifth in her heat.

She also swam in the 4x50m medley relay alongside Lauren Quigley, Siobhan-Marie O’Connor and Sophie Smith, and the Brits were fifth in their heat in 1:51.27.

Saturday was a quieter day for Miley, although she still managed a Scottish record and a personal best.

Having qualified for the 400m freestyle final sixth-fastest, Miley touched home in a new national record of 4:00.39 as she missed out on a medal in fourth.

Her first swim of the day saw her set a personal best of 28.87 seconds in the 50m backstroke, to win her heat.

Meanwhile, Swindon Dolphin’s Craig Harris enjoyed six solid races at the DSE National Short Course Championships in Sheffield at the weekend.

The 13-year-old is an S14 competitor but at Ponds Forge he lined up against swimmers with a range of disabilities.

Harris, who won triple gold at the Sainsbury’s School Games earlier this year, saw his moment of the weekend come yesterday in the 400m freestyle relay.

Competing in the south west team alongside Trowbridge Swimming Club’s Aaron Moores, Ben Proctor and Joseph Schenk, Harris ended up in silver medal position.

Scotland touched the wall first in 3:43.80 with the south west second in 4:02.27 and the east third in 4:15.18.

Elsewhere yesterday, Harris clocked 28.48 in the 50m freestyle to finish 26th overall.

Saturday saw the youngster take part in no less than four events with his best performance being in the 200m freestyle, an event almost entirely made up of S14 swimmers.

Harris clocked 2:12.79, a time just short of his personal best, to finish fifth.

The Dolphin flyer smashed his personal best in the 100m backstroke with 1:08.51 (10th) and nearly broke the minute mark in the 100m freestyle, recording 1:01.08 (17th) His fourth swim of the day saw him notch 2:30.04 in the 200m medley to end up 12th.
