PAOLO Di Canio would prefer “less compliments and more points” as he looks to drive Swindon Town up the League One ladder.

In recent weeks, the Italian’s side have received praise from both Notts County manager Keith Curle and Doncaster boss Dean Saunders following their performances in the 1-0 defeat at Meadow Lane and the 1-1 home draw with Donny.

However, with only a single point to show for their efforts in those two games, Di Canio would much rather pick up victories than pleasantries.

He said: “At the end we need to get points. Now I start to hear or read something to appreciate, but I would prefer less compliments and more points.

“It’s typical. People made many compliments at Notts County, the manager said they should have finished 3-0 down in the first half. I heard Dean Saunders say they were the best side, they deserved to win far and away, they will be there.

“I appreciate the comments. It was clear it wasn’t my opinion. It’s clear that we dominated but when the Doncaster manager says ‘they dominated us’ it’s clear I didn’t feed him to say something like that.

“It’s clear that this game has gone with only one point and we missed something. We have worked so hard in the last few days and we hope to get something more.”

Di Canio takes his team to Oldham today as Town go in search of their first league win in four outings, and for once the Italian would be content with a below-par display and all three points.

“Oldham come from a very good moment but once again, if we play like Doncaster we have much more chance to win in the future than to lose or draw,” he said.

“There is a moment when I prefer to have less compliments and more points. Last year was exactly the same. There was a period where I said for once, in a cup final, I would prefer to play bad and win.

“There is a moment of the season when it’s more important to get points. It’s difficult to win if we play really badly, if we don’t create anything and concede a lot of chances.

“Even at Bury when we didn’t play good football and won they didn’t have one chance.

“It’s difficult for us to play really badly and get points, but if you asked me ‘would you decide now to play badly on Saturday if you put in a contract that for sure you were going to win?’ then yes, for sure, put three points there.”
