Town "90 per cent" likely to beat Colchester, says PDC

PAOLO Di Canio believes Swindon have a 90 per-cent chance of winning at Colchester tomorrow if his players perform the way he knows they can.

Town travel to the Weston Homes Community Stadium to face a side who have only won once in their last 11 games, and have lost their last six matches in League One including a 3-1 Boxing Day defeat at home to Brentford.

A free-kick goal from former Town full-back Michael Rose secured a 1-0 victory for the Essex side at the County Ground in October, but Di Canio is confident the Robins will put the record straight when the two teams meet tomorrow.

“We know what has happened with them, and we were in a day where we created three or four clear chances but we didn’t play our football that day,” he said.

“We gave away one silly free-kick from 25-yards and Rose punished us and we lost 1-0.

“But we have improved a lot since that day and we have more enthusiasm, determination and quality, and we will have four or five different players than when we played against them.

“It depends how we are going to approach the game, because if we underestimate them for a bit we are going to make a disaster and that can reflect on us in the future.

“But we are going to play like we know we can do, no problem, and it is clear if we play in the future like the last three or four games it will not be a problem.

“If we behave well we will have a 90 per cent chance to win, if not maybe a draw, which is better than to lose.

“In the last three days we trained very hard, but more important for me was to see them go through the small details with real attention and they did not disappoint me.”

Despite their dismal recent run, Di Canio has been impressed with the way new Colchester boss Joe Dunne has gone about his work, and insisted they have a number of players capable of causing problems for his side.

“We have to emphasise their moment, and in their team they have people like Clinton Morrison who can cause problems, or maybe in 10 minutes they can put their experience to cause problems,” he said.

“We can be in a trap and they can be a big problem because they give the chance to two young guys and one scored straight away with a very good goal.

“They have a new player and Kem Izzet came back, but the manager is strong and he didn’t give up about his idea to play good football.

“Even if he is in a bad moment he tries to play football, but he made the decision to push out three or four players which will pay for him in the future.

“We have to be really careful and we have to take this chance because if we don’t it is difficult to think for the top.”

Nice to hear PDC being confident about the way his players have performed recently and I agree we should win easily. But what if our strikers don't perform? It wouldn't be the first time would it? lol. We have easily the best team in the league minus 2 up front so lets hope that Williams continues to score and one of the other front men hopefully start scoring consistantly, as we are unlikely to gain promotion by relying on goals from the wings and midfeild.
Still urgently need a front man scoring goals imo.

Surely!!! with Williams, Bostock, Storey, Collins, Martin, Rooney and De Vita all capable of playing forward positions. PDC should have tried a few more combinations by now. How much longer into the season do we go, waiting for the same players to score more often? How many more chances do we let them squander? It just seems such a shame for the rest of the team to play so well on a regular basis only to see all their hard work thrown away again and again. I hope PDC is reading this and makes an effort to try maybe De Vita up front with Williams and let Roberts try to prove himself again. If it doesn't work, so what!!! Let us see for ourselves. Or maybe give Storey more of a crack at things? What about trying De Vita and Storey up front and use Bostock at the same time??? Surely worth a try before we spend money on useless individuals that no one else wants like Adam Rooney for example. Well anyway I think we will do ok this season, but have my doubts about promotion unless the final third is addressed urgently. End of moan/constructive criticisms etc etc. Up The Reds!!!

Predictions League: Colchester v Swindon AND Swindon v Portsmouth

Dear all,
.
I'm putting up a second double poster - Tranmere entries close at 2.00pm on Saturday and Portsmouth Entries close at 1pm (EARLY KICK-OFF!!) on New Years Day but you can enter both of them here and can submit both on the same post or either at any time from now until the individual deadline.

PLEASE….Make it clear which game you're predicting for :-)
.
"I'm really looking forward to Tranmere under lights as you can't beat a cup or top of the table fixture under floodlights" - That was my opening quote on the Tranmere game but BOY! I didn't expect that display, even the Spanish Inquisition would have come to mind before a 5-0 and how it wasn't double figures is beyond me except that their goalie had a fantastic night despite 5 going in…..by coincidence I always look forward to Colchester away and Portsmouth at home…..can't wait!! (except for the soul-less new(ish) Essex moors stadium).
.
Personally I very much doubt the Colchester game will be on but I may be being unfair on them, fortunately I missed the home game and whilst I enjoyed our last cup exploits in Essex we don't have a very good recent history in the league with 4 defeats in the last 4 visits although we are 4-0-5 since 1st Jan 2000…..and it is very much our turn to win!!….especially as things are very different this time round. Colchester have lost their last 6 and 8 of the last 9…but we shouldn't expect too much in what is a hollow stadium where the wind howls through the huge gaps and all on a very soggy and squidgy pitch.

Portsmouth at home on 1st January in past years would have been a big battle but they aren't what they were despite us not having beaten them at home since 1993, but they still have a fantastic fan base….one which has matured and mellowed through the years. They have lost 7 and drawn 3 out of their last 10 so again not a lot to shout about although we may see one of my old favourites Phil Smith on the County Ground pitch again after he joined on a 1 month contract.
.
Our record high score v Portsmouth was the 5-2 victory back in 1921…..Yep you guessed it - on NEW YEARS DAY!! :-) Since then we have won 3-0 twice hence a 3 goal winning margin is our largest ever victory….can we replicate last Friday night!?…bit too much to ask but this team is definitely capable of doing it.

Good luck everyone, and hopefully we'll get Saturday's game played with a decent result and one that will set up a fantastic County Ground atmosphere for New Years Day.

Cheers all and wishing everyone a VERY HAPPY, HEALTHY and PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!!!! (especially to all the players, management and back-room staff at the County Ground), SAPFanSTFC!!

I'd say we've lost more games through poor all-round performance than through missed chances. And 7 days ago we won a game 5-0!

a feel there is some conspiracy going on with clubs that are struggling ie Colchester to get games called off. How come there are teams in areas where the weather has been worse than the suffolk area and there games are still going ahead. Colchester are having a bad time and i think he has got his players in for more work but got the local ref to call the game off and same with Orient they had a load of injuries and looking on their forum they had a clear day when the game was called off. To me the league need to look at these clubs as we were the only game called off boxing day and i'll bet we'll be the only game off tomorrow.

Dirty underhand tactics going on.
These clubs will prefer evening games under lights as they are always different to games on a weekend afternoon.

I know what you are saying but what about what I am saying. Do you agree with any of it? I'ts not as if we've won many games that convincingly is it? But we should be with the number of chances being created.
