SWINDON skater hockey star Hannah Archer is both honoured and excited after being called up to the Great Britain side for the World Championships in Los Angeles.

The Swindon Flames player will travel to Anaheim with the rest of the squad for the event in July, having gone through a rigorous selection process at the back-end of last year.

The 20-year-old played in the 2011 tournament in Italy, and can’t wait to return to the international scene for the event hosted at the Anaheim Ducks’ 17,000 capacity Honda Center.

“It is a great honour because there is so much talent in this country at the moment, and we had to go through quite a long selection process to make the team,” he said.

“We did well at the last World Championships in 2011 and it was a great experience to be involved, but we have quite a few new faces in the team this time, including some younger players and some older ones as well.

“It starts off in a few different pools before you get into the quarter-finals or the knock-out section, and it would be great if we could go a long way.

“The earlier rounds are played at the little rinks around the Honda Centre, and then as you go on the games at the latter stages are on the main rink.

“It will be amazing just to go inside there let alone play, because the whole place is amazing.

“With the team that has been selected there is no reason we can’t exceed expectations and come back to the UK with a medal, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Archer is appealing for sponsorship with the cost of travelling to Los Angeles £1,500, and the Bournemouth University student believes her sport is worthy of some help.

“It is a really fast growing sport now and the World Championships will be screened on TV all the way across America because it is really popular there, and it will be on the internet as well,” he said.

“We have had the Olympics recently which showed so many sports which have been given funding, and it would be great if we could be too.

“We cover all of the expenses ourselves, so any help we could get would be great to help with things like kit or travel.”
