SWINDON TOWN: Martin unclear on Swindon future

Chris Martin Chris Martin

CHRIS Martin is still unsure where his immediate future lies with the end of his loan spell at Swindon Town rapidly approaching.

The striker is due to return to parent club Norwich after the clash with Carlisle on Saturday but he said his agent is in discussions with both Town and the Canaries at present.

However, he is in the dark regarding where exactly he will be training come Monday morning.

"I think there are talks ongoing at this moment," he said. "I really, honestly don't know what is happening. I'll speak to my agent who'll then have to speak to both clubs and then there's everything going on behind the scenes but I don't know what's happening.

"I'll probably find out a little bit more later on today and then go from there. I've just got to look at the game on Saturday as a chance to go out with a bang if I do get the chance to play and then go from there.

"I've enjoyed my time here so we'll have to wait and see on that aspect of it."

there appears to be an eerie silence at the CG when all should be singing and dancing.....where the hell is the chairman or the chief executive or someone to tell us all what is going on ? It seems Paolo is as much in the dark as the rest of us.....what has happened to the open communication or does this spell a return to the dark old days ?

I would not expect the club do handle its negotiations on a messageboard, but from what has been said by Patey so far, it seems clear.

No more money for new players (which includes extending loan deals).

That could change if we can somehow offload players, by selling or out on loan, and that side of the equation needs to be done first.

Sir William Patey Out!!!!

Get someone who know's what the F*** their doing......

He might be a top negotiator, beut jesus christ, his people skills are just absolutely awful....

I've been in the Armed forces for well over 20 years and i've had to ask my men to do some pretty awful things...

I never ever would have been able to do that without learning how to discuss things, and be open and develop my people skills.....

Whats happening to this Club??

We've gone from AF and JW who were the most open, pleasant, passionate about STFC Board.

To, quiet, scheming say nothing type of situation going........

From being what should be the nicest time, to feeling like i'm waiting for the carpet to be whipped from under us..........

Please Please Mr Black......

Say something to us......Please make a statement.........

Something doesnt smell right!!!!

You can't expect any football club to do its negotiating in public.
We should also be grateful to the board for pouring their own money into the club, to such an extent that we went into an embargo because our outgoings were too high in comparison to our income.
If we want the club to be able to spend more money on players sustainably, we need to increase our revenue by getting more fans to the ground. We can't just expect the owners to keep subsidising the club.

All these rumours, speculation we can but await the outcome of the Board meeting.I still think Mr Black will not just pack his bags and go perhapsSWP should.
The fear is with several payers returning it is bound to effect the loan players and for the club to work within the 65% limit.
OK Pdc has made some errors but saldo called some good shots with him I think this is whySWP is chairman basically to get rid Of Pdc and have a fire sale.
Yes a worrying time for the club and fans just hope it works out.
Can see Ritchie being sold on the cheap just to raise money again just hope they aint so silly

Everyone expects our Board to continually put more funds into the Club.

To those who are asking for that are you doing your bit by attending the home games ?

You can also do your bit. Our crowds are unlikely to sustain Championship football at present so come on get down to the CG and do your bit !!

Well said that man!!! Too many people are very quick to make excuse's as to why they can't attend. Bums on seats is where it's at!! Stop the whinging and start supporting. If we could get upwards of 10,000 against Carlise this Saturday maybe the powers that be might turn their heads?? Sadly, i predict around about 8,300 tops...........

Sums it up I think. None of us know the exact figures but it really isn't in doubt. I don't think that Sir Will is going to do anything more now. For once we will see if Mr Spencer can deliver without a % on the deal. No one else for Paolo to turn to, but that is what managers at our level have to deal with. On the loans it seems just a matter of priority and seeing how far we can get down the list. For me 1 Ward 2 Hollands 3 Martin 4 Bostock. It is not a disaster but probably the difference between going up or staying put. I have a feeling that we might have to sell either Flint or TA-H to keep all loans. Certainly one of them on loan. Perhaps Cox back to ICT on loan.

Agree on the priority of loanees, although possibly Hollands then Ward. Both have been good, but we have better cover at CB.

Doesn't bode well if Cox cannot renew his loan stint at the lowest rung of football.

Some good points there Bilbst, agree with your order of priority, but do like Bostock and would hate to see him go eleswhere. hadn't thought about TA-H or Flint being surplus, but letting one of them get some game time as a loan with another div 1 club rather than sell them would make alot of sense. Agree also Inverness would probably be happy to take Lee Cox back until the end of season, but question is who is going to take Risser..

mikek says...
8:13pm Thu 3 Jan 13

Early days yet there are quite a few days of transfer or loan activity during January so no need to panic just yet. Risser, Cox, Smith, will all probably find new clubs on loan or permanents, can't see any staying here, might be worth cashing in on Roberts and keep Luke Rooney here and agree with billbst it could be worth moving TAH on as he will not figure here unless we get an injury crisis so that could free up some funds. Caddis will go to Brum and there is still a chance that Austin will move on even though the manager says he is going no where, we have heard all that before and I am sure Austin's head is being turned by Premiership clubs as we speak. So there could be plenty of funds all set for new arrivals unless Black thinks otherwise and blocks them. Lets hope the adver have some news tomorrow.

Stop flapping , talks are ongoing and that is a plus.
Patey said that they hoped the 4 loanies could be retained but finances needed to be discussed. There may be a situation where there would be movement out.

I believes that the movement out would be those who have already been loaned or some other fringe players. If they can't be found another club then I reckon contracts will be terminated.

"Que sera, sera whatever will be will be the future's not ours to see que sera sera"...so no amount of speculating, wishing, hoping, praying to your god etc. will alter the decisions reached and made by the board. Those decisions may not be popular -they may even result in all the progress made over the last 18 months being reversed -and they may incense some supporters. But like those magnificent Pompey fans what ever manure is thrown at Town fans they'll be there shovelling the sh!t long after Bilbo Patey and co. have departed.

The club have performed fantastically well bearing in mind many players brought in 1.5 years ago and 1 year ago were brought in to perform at l2 level on 2 year contracts. We are still suffering from the hangover of seeking back to back promotions with a shadow squad not really of l1 standard and needing to pay off individuals with consequent costs to the club. It is entirely appropriate that the board keep the finances straight. That was the very first expectation made by the senior management under Fitton and we must not forget the strategy that Fitton had. Who could have predicted that under Wilson in the second season it went so badly wrong. I for one will be happy that we keep going with the squad of players we started the season with and look to next year to use the loan system inventively to go for promotion once the marginal players contracts have expired. I believe a contract is a contract. If you break it - you pay through the nose and someone has to pay for that. We can still go up but injuries to key players would cripple the success so then its about a bit of luck in that department. On the other hand - Caddis and Flint will fetch decent money and could fund some extra loans. Personally I dont want to see players paid to leave the club - thats not good business in my book!

Malkym says...
9:37pm Thu 3 Jan 13

Ciclo - what you believe is a contract and what is actually a football contract bear no similarity whatsoever!

Stilloyal says...
9:41pm Thu 3 Jan 13

Well I personally think that if we should fail in promotion this season then our budget will be slightly reduced next season. Also if we did achieve promotion and things are as tight as some would believe then I reckon there would be a good hike in prices without a substantial increase in budget.
If we could get 9k season ticket holders it might make a difference, but knowing the apathy of the people of Swindon that scenario wont happen.
I know times are hard and some cant afford a S/T but there are those out there that can well afford them but can't be ar5ed.

madterrier says...
11:15pm Thu 3 Jan 13

Ciclo - one of the points you make is one that some people just don't seem to get. That is, if you cancel someone's contract 'by mutual consent' it usually still costs the club the full obligation of that contract.

It's actually even worse than that, as the club probably has to pay off the contract up front, which hits cashflow, the calculation used in wage cap calculations, and interest payments. Why people think cancelling someone's contract is a magic bullet that costs nothing is beyond me.

On the strategy, we had a three-year plan to get into the Championship. I would bet that the working assumption was immediate promotion from League 2, a season to consolidate in League 1, and then a second promotion in the third year. When Paolo was saying in November that 'things had changed', maybe this current situation is what he meant.

Or maybe he was never really aligned with the board on how the strategy would be implemented. Many of the players he bought weren't really good enough for League 2, yet they were on two-year deals, and their wages/pay-offs are now millstones around the club's neck. Probably staying in League 1 this season was always the most likely outcome. And now it sounds like the board doesn't want to stick around for the third year of the three-year plan anyway.
