Ward completes permanent Town switch
6:00am Friday 4th January 2013 in Sport By Sam Morshead
Darren Ward
DARREN Ward has signed on permanently for Swindon Town after being released by Millwall.
The defender, who has been a mainstay of the Robins’ back four in recent weeks, originally joined Town on loan in August and has gone on to make 18 appearances, scoring one goal.
Swindon have taken up a clause inserted into Ward’s summer switch to Wiltshire, with the 34-year-old penning an 18-month contract at the County Ground. Ward will not cost Town any money in transfer fees.
Di Canio was delighted to make the veteran a full-time member of the Swindon playing staff.
He said: “We can announce that Darren Ward is our player now. He will remain permanently with us, he is our player. I am happy to say this because now he has proved that he is the player that we want.
“Millwall released him and gave us the chance to sign him since January 1 without paying anything. That was the deal at the beginning of the season so it doesn’t reflect in a way that we can have a better situation.
“It is good for the club because they got value. Obviously he is 34, he is not young but he’s someone who we’ve got in here to pay the wages but he’s a crucial player without spending any sort of money.
“That is important, like we talked in the past about Gary Roberts and Andy Williams.
“We had two players we couldn’t imagine would cost us a bit more than what we thought - Troy (Archibald-Henille) and James (Collins) - but we have worked like we did last year with free agent signings.
“Darren is a very good signing to keep. For the future he will do a very good job because he is a very good professional.”
Meanwhile, Charlton manager Chris Powell wants any deal to keep midfielder Danny Hollands with Swindon made as soon as possible.
Hollands’ loan spell with the Robins expires on Saturday, but an extension is likely, with Powell saying: “I’m in discussions with Swindon and with him and his agent to see where we go. Swindon haven’t said much yet.
"We’ve obviously made contact knowing that the deal is up on Saturday and now it is about what happens in the next 48 hours. I would like it resolved before Saturday so everyone is happy with what is going to happen from Monday onwards.”

Don't agree with LR - Why strip Macka of the Captaincy he seems to be doing a good job - keep Ward in charge of the defence but to change Captain mid season is another thing all together.

Think a loan spell for one would be good as they probably need game time

Only one though as we do need cover and options - especially if we are not signing another fullback and using Devera and Macca as cover

Strange how those who thought TAH was the greatest thing since sliced bread are remarkably quiet these days. Admittedly I didn't rate Ward in front of Flint to start but the lad has done well in recent weeks and is as solid as a rock in the middle of the park.

As goes Troy, we signed him for three years not 6 months, he has plenty of time to come good and benefit from training here. Flint has gone from non league to league two and on to league one in successive seasons and still has catching up to do and further development, and he has the ability to come good, or would have been gone by now. Our defence and future prospects in defence must be the envy of many managers, I see no point in off loading any of them unless we receive silly offers.

I'm an Archie fan but you can't break up a great partnership like we have now so it'll be some time before he gets back in. I think Flint will not be with us beyond the summer.
With Jmac almost fit I can see Macca losing his place and agree with L/R that Wardie will take the armband.
Macca will become a bench warmer and cover for anywhere along the back. I am a fan of Macca's but Jay is the better L/B and as I said earlier you can't break up the C/B pairing that is playing so well.'
I can't see Macca getting back into midfield, we have an abundance of talent there and his age (34 ?)may prevent him from doing anything more than an emergency job in there.

As a side note, doubt Oxford will end up homeless, it could probably go a few different ways -
1) Pox/Welsh buy the stadium out together
2) Welsh buy it and keep Pox as tenants
3) Welsh buy it and don't want Pox as tenants, so they will then need to try groundsharing elsewhere (would say maybe Wycombe Wanderers if they weren't rugby-sharing already).
Most amusing whatever way you look at it.

While I think Ward is our best centre back, this club needs to make money in the transfer market by scouting and developing young players.
At the moment we are losing money hand over fist, paying transfer and agents' fees for players and then giving them away for nothing.

I think you may have been a little generous with some your valuations, but you have also undervalued at least two in my view. If I recall correctly, Bournemouth offered £900K for Matt Ritchie so on the reckoning his value must be higher than that. I also think Wes could command a higher fee beacuse of his age and the potentila to improve (goalies are known to develop later and last longer).
With a bit of give and take I think your final numbers are pretty much spot on though.
For all his 'poor' dealings, PDC has developed some of this squad and improved their worth considerably in the process.

I see McGoldrick has signed for Ipswich, he was never realistically coming here, but at least he is not at a League 1 rival.

Don't agree with LR - Why strip Macka of the Captaincy he seems to be doing a good job - keep Ward in charge of the defence but to change Captain mid season is another thing all together.
When i was 35 i was fitter than when i first joined the Army at 18....
I was more strict and very fitness aware....running everymorning 5 miles regardless of whether i had PT on or a march...........

Ward will still be showing Flint a clean pair of heels in 2yrs time and unless Flint knuckles down it could be for the next 4yrs.

Off subject. I live in Swanage and was hoping to go to the Bournemouth game but away tickets now sold out. If anyone gets to hear about any ticket holder not being able to make the game then please e-mail me - blazingriff@btintern et.com with contact details. Thankyou
Most amusing whatever way you look at it.

.
In the season ending 2010 we made about £950k largely due to Cox and a bit via McNamee
.
Then in the year ending 2011 we made about £1.6m largely due to Austin and Morrison
.
So that is £2.5m there - the accounts then revealed that our net outlay post 2011 - which had the signings of Connell, Smith, Rooney and Wes in it plus a few pay-offs like Comazzi stood at about £500k
.
So that would be down to £2m - we know Collins and Troy cost us about another £500k - so we would still be at £1.5m
.
Caddis even at his knock down price is looking like generating £100k post sell on and players like Ritchie, Ferry and Wes are way above what we paid for them - mean more net transfer income
.
Majority of the time - this board has done extremely well in paying for young talent and then selling them on a a profit - exactly what Collins and Troy were meant to do his year and Flint before that
.
Rooney was probably thought of in that bracket too - but no one wins them all!
.
As I said all summer - the reason why we are doing well now is the experienced heads - so signing some is vital - not just to current results but developing our players - surely Flint and Troy must be learning off Ward?
.
It's all about balance a few wise captures of young talent balanced out by old heads is the way to go
.
Ideally we won't lose our stars - but reality is they will move on so we just need to ensure we have the replacement ready
.
Thompson has done this with Caddis - so we could see others do it too
.
Granted we have no replacement for Ritchie now but who is to say one couldn't be signed in the summer?

IMO it shows how good the current pairing has been when two good players in Flint and TAH cannot get in the side. Both are fantastic reserves to have and both would probably admit that may have to wait for their chance. If they get it hopefully they will take it in the same way Joe has.
No doubt in my mind that this signing is the most important. Hollands next on the list for me, his passing with the outside of the boot reminds me of Dougie in the play-off season.
Off to cheer on Pompey and Benson on Sky now.

Interesting challenge for Wizard this, because Churchill is one of the very few people he does not post as, although even GlasRed made a couple of appearances this weekend!!

Strange how those who thought TAH was the greatest thing since sliced bread are remarkably quiet these days. Admittedly I didn't rate Ward in front of Flint to start but the lad has done well in recent weeks and is as solid as a rock in the middle of the park.
Taxi for Troy!
PdC's judgement is better than most posters on here seem to think. It's about patience, alLowing a player to settle in, have a period in the team, form partnerships etc. That's where he is not so good.
Adam Rooney hasn't impressed me greatly but I suspect there is something there. The goal he scored at Carlisle was classy.
Overall, there is much ado about nothing these days on this site. Why the doom and gloom?
We've won the last two games 5-0.
We're starting to get in to our stride like last season.
We've got a good squad which will still be strong once the transfer window shuts.
We've financial backers who have already proved their commitment to the club and even if they need to sell, I'm sure will do it sensibly.
We got 11,500 against Pompey. From my observation, products were flying out of the club shop like hot cakes.
What did surprise me was the subdued nature of the Town fans during the Pompey game. As a few poster have noted, it was the away fans that created the atmosphere and great credit to the, for that.
So why was that?

Fair enough if people don't want to make any noise but they need to respect people who do, and at the very least, not whinge after ten minutes when we're not winning. Seemed to get a lot of that last season, people got so used to winning some sections of the ground would seem to go berserk at the players any time a mistake was made. Get a grip people!
