SWINDON TOWN: Busier afternoon suits Wes
WES Foderingham was just happy to have something to do as he went up against boyhood idol David James on Saturday.
Town’s superb defensive record in recent weeks has meant the young keeper has been a spectator in a number of games, but he was called upon to make vital stops from Harry Arter, Brett Pitman and Lewis Grabban to help earn a vital point.
Former England keeper James also made a string of impressive saves during the 1-1 draw, and Foderingham was proud to share a pitch with the veteran stopper.
“In a lot of games this season I haven’t really had anything to do, so I was happy to make a couple of saves at the end to help get the draw,” he said.
“At times it was freezing so I was just trying to run around to keep warm, and with the save I made from Harry Arter in the first half I had water in my eyes and could hardly see, so I just made myself big and it was maybe a bit of a lucky save.
“It was fantastic to play against David James because when I was growing up he was my idol and I looked up to him, and he made some great saves. I was even looking at him in the warm-up when I should have been concentrating on my own game.”
The former Liverpool and West Ham man was at fault for Town’s equaliser after his poor clearance led to Andy Williams finding the net, but Foderingham believes conditions played a part in the game’s two goals.
“The conditions played a part for sure, and I had a kick which I shanked off the pitch, but these things happen. Willo (Andy Williams) took the goal really well and it was good for us,” he said.
“If we were offered a point before the game we would have taken it because they are in great form at the moment,” he said.
“We started brighter than them and we had the earlier edge, but a defensive error allowed them to get a goal. Their goal was a bit of mayhem to be honest, and maybe we could have cleared it earlier and then Wardy cleared it in the air, and it was outside the six yard box so I didn’t think it was my ball.
“Conditions were difficult and I can’t fault any of the boys at all.”
