PROMOTION-CHASING Wootton Bassett might have won 5-2 at Old Woodstock in Division One West, but boss Dave Turner was left fuming after Craig Bowden's late dismissal.

Turner was incredulous after the left-back was shown a straight red card by whistler L. Davis for a challenge in which he appeared to win the ball.

"I'm a little bit fed up," said Turner. "Craig has got a 12-inch stud mark on his thigh so I don't know what the ref has seen.

"I went to see him afterwards and we showed the injury to him, and he could not explain what he had seen. I think he knew he had made a mistake.

"Craig actually made a really good tackle and won the ball and even the guy who studded Craig said it wasn't even a foul.

"I just don't know what the ref got into his head. Thankfully we were 5-2 up at the time.

"I will now lose a very good footballer for three matches because of something the ref thinks he's seen.

"You want to keep your best players playing."

On the positive side, veteran striker Shaun Terry rolled back the years with a perfect hat-trick to inspire Bassett to victory.

Often in the shadow of Mark Barnes this term, Terry took his tally to 14 for the season after a virtuoso display on the road.

Bassett twice took the lead in the first half through Matt Bown and Terry, but Lewis Coyle pulled the hosts level on both occasions.

Seven minutes after the break, Terry restored the visitors' lead and minutes later Richie Saunders crashed home his first goal since returning to Rylands Way.

Bassett created plenty of chances in the closing stages and one of those fell to Terry, who finished confidently to complete his treble with 15 minutes to go.

The only dampener on an otherwise positive day came when Bowden was controversially sent off late on, but the three points were well and truly sewn up by that point.

Turner added: "We weren't particularly good first half but in the second half we were superb.

"We could have hit six or seven but their keeper made a couple of good saves.

"Shaun Terry is one of my oldest players but he scored the perfect hat-trick and had a good game."
