SWINDON TOWN: Paolo will decide Win A Pro Contract winner

Swindon Advertiser: Swindon Town boss Paolo Di Canio Swindon Town boss Paolo Di Canio

PAOLO Di Canio will be in attendance as the Samsung Win A Pro Contract competition comes to its conclusion at Leyton Orient’s Brisbane Road ground tonight.

The semi-final, which took place at the County Ground before Christmas, saw 22 hopefuls whittled down to 11 by Di Canio and Orient boss Russell Slade.

Both managers will each award a contract to one player based on their performance this week. The match, against a Leyton Orient XI, kicks off at 7pm and entry is free.

Di Canio said: “All the finalists have done well to make it this far. They should be proud of their achievements.

“I am looking for a player who will fit into my current squad and improve as a footballer. He must have a good attitude and be willing to learn. There is an amazing prize on offer. The players will have to work hard to show that they deserve it.”

Meanwhile, Swindon Town’s trip to Doncaster on Monday, April 1 has been selected to be screened live by Sky Sports.

The fixture at the Keepmoat Stadium will now kick-off at 12.15pm. The Robins will receive £10,000 as part of the agreement, while Doncaster - as the home team - will take £30,000.

Too bad the TV whack is less than first advertized. It helps but 3 x 10k is hardly enough to get Paolo the funds to keep Martin and Hollands all season - hope he gets Benson to agree to the Cheltenham deal - B has been a great servant to the club - and can then get Bostock back as well.

Must be the cup games at the £100k mark
.
Another reason why Championship football is vital - they won't be getting £40k a game that is for sure!

I suppose on the bright side it's another game which may not have been that well attended anyway given the distance involved, and it could have lost us money if we were playing at home due to some deciding not to bother with it.

On the downside the early kick off means there will probably only be a handful of town supporters there - fair play to any who make it as a six/seven o clock start off in the morning doesn't sound appealing!

As for the game tonight, can't see it being on given the weather in London. Hope PDC hasn't left yet!!

As for the TV money, I'm sure it will go towards Hollands and Martin's extension but I suspect that Mr Bostock has burnt his bridges with PDC. PDC asked Bostock to call him and he didn't. We all know how PDC feels about this sort of thing.

Whilst he was an obvious stand in for Ferry, he got very little game time and may have been an expensive luxury to just have on the bench.

Bostock wants football, he isn't getting it with Town so will go elsewhere which makes sense to me completely.

Too good to be sat warming a league 1 teams bench..

Sruggling to see the point of the Win a Pro Contract, other than the Samsung money.

So far I think we've had a game and a half in 2 years out of the players selected, and that's only through injury.

Another thing is the higher up the leagues you go the less the chance of the best player being anywhere near first team standard.

Imagine if Man Utd ran the competition, its pure fiction to imagine that there is an unknown amateur player out there who might win the contract and oust Rooney or Van Persie from the team.

But I suppose if the sponsors are happy t pay it then may as well go through the motions.

I think this is a fair point, and non-league players have a tendency to announce themselves anyway through their performances (Austin being a prime example). But I suppose you never know.

As for the TV money, that's disappointing. Better than nothing I suppose, but far too little to make much difference. Forget Bostock, we will be lucky just to get Hollands and Martin for the rest of the season, and this probably depends on getting Benson off the wage bill - hopefully not by paying all his wages upfront!

I guess that it's one of those things that has to be done, under the terms of sponsorship.

Who knows, they might unearth a gem tonight?

However, organisations like UK Football Finder have a better track record of finding good players from out of nowhere (they found Abdul Razak, now at Manchester City FC)

LB Bradley Diallo (ex Oldham), RB Jerome Kisonga (ex Lille LOSC), GK Gyula Kohmani (ex MTK), GK Pedro Marenco (ex Cadiz), ST Anil Bugday (ex Spurs and Galatasaray), DF/ST John Kamara (ex Brugge and Birmingham City trialist) are players in their organisation that Swindon really ought to take a look at as all of them could play at League 1 standard with the right coaching.

Perhaps Paolo should email the club at www.ukfffc.co.uk
