SWINDON TOWN: Ward lifts the lid on his Millwall hell

DARREN Ward has revealed a permanent move to Paolo Di Canio’s Swindon Town is exactly what he needed following his nightmare spell with Millwall.

The experienced centre back has agreed an 18-month contract with the Robins following a successful loan spell which has seen him forge an impressive partnership with Joe Devera, with the pair helping Town keep four consecutive clean sheets before the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth on Saturday.

During his time on loan Ward has kept quiet over the extent of his unhappiness at the Den, but now he has made the move permanent he has revealed how he was made to feel like a child by the club’s hierarchy, forcing him to want to leave.

“I am delighted to be here because I have not really enjoyed my football for some time before this move, and I had been looking to get away from Millwall for quite a while,” he said.

“I have had to keep my mouth shut and just get on with it for quite some time, but I really didn’t like it there and I was not happy with how I was treated.

“I love Millwall football club and I love the fans and the players, but I didn’t enjoy my football for many reasons and now I am at Swindon I can just get on with what I love doing.

“I wasn’t treated well at all, and I was a 34 year old getting treated like a schoolboy, and I really didn’t like that one bit.

“I had worked hard and I did very well there, my record shows for itself, and when you work hard you like to be credited and that wasn’t happening.

“In myself I didn’t enjoy it at all, but as a footballer you have to get on with it.”

Manager Di Canio has often received criticism of the way he has handled his players during his time in Wiltshire, but Ward is impressed with the way the former West Ham striker works.

“I have been here three or four months and I know how the manager works, and I like it,” he said.

“We are all treated in a good way, but when it is hard it is hard, and like anywhere if you don’t put the work in you don’t get results.

“One thing I can’t stand is people who do things half-heartedly, and from my background I have always had to work hard for what I have got.

“People are not at the training ground and don’t see what is going on, and it is all about opinions in this world.”

Saturdays game might be a doubt, forcast is a possible blizzard coming in on Friday and Saturday. Even if the pitch is kept snow free then there is the issue with the paths and car park. All to do with health & safety, it wouldn't have been an issue 20 odd years ago , but hey ho sign of the times sigh !!

I thought it was a nice little article. With regards to the Millwall headline, there was no naming of names & nothing really spiteful, he was just giving the interviewer an insight to one of the reasons he wanted a move here. It was a factual comment & makes a change from all the speculative news that appears far too often.

A first class signing, had a few wobbly bits at the beginning, but has come good since with a vengeance. His link up with Devera must be very re assuring for the rest of the team and management.

We all accept that one day our manager will leave and his back room team probably with him, Ward would make the ideal replacement for one of those back room team in a coaching role, and would set an ideal example to all the younger players coming through.

Back in the time of Mike Summerbee & the great legends of the day I still have a picture from the Evening Advertiser of me as a fourteen year old lad shoveling snow from the pitch on the day of the game. I was proud as punch to have been able to do it & for the game to go ahead, my reward free entry so that saved me two shillings haha. Forget 'elf n safety the club would probably be vilified & fined nowadays for using under age slave labour - bonkers.

I'm not having a go at Ward. I don't agree that it's a factual comment though. If Millwall agree that they were treating him like a schoolboy, then yes it's probably fair to say it is factual. But I wonder if they would? All I'm saying is I would be interested to hear the other side of things - just as when PDC went public about Caddis it was interesting to hear Caddis's side of the story. I think these things are probably better left unsaid in the first place but once the matter has become public it's hard to know what to think if you've only got the view from one side.

Ah, but what if Coventry come through with a storming run and pip us for second place Don? We might get to the end of the season and prefer a Tranmere win! Too early to get fussed about other teams' results I reckon. If we keep winning the rest will take care of itself anyway.

Newbury Robin. Did you read Sams column last Saturday where he mentioned the anniversary of the 5-0 win against QPR on Jan 12th 1963, when we had 17" of snow dumped on us in 24 hours. What he failed to mention the lads played in basket ball boots (no studs), they also wore yellow gloves. QPR were skidding all over the place and Alec Stock (their manager) did his nut as he obviously thought we had taken an unfair advantage, lol.
For those that were there it was a game to remember and I can still envisage the Pinks cartoon in my mind of the Robins running out with their yellow gloves, (something unheard of in those days to wear gloves and jock straps)

Ah, but what if Coventry come through with a storming run and pip us for second place Don? We might get to the end of the season and prefer a Tranmere win! Too early to get fussed about other teams' results I reckon. If we keep winning the rest will take care of itself anyway.
Oi Den,

Have to agree with Don on this one, we shouldn't be too concerned tabout teams that are behind us, play-offs at best and then it's a lottery because they have to catch us and yes promotion could be a possibility if they hit the type of form Crewe did last season, but won't be easy. Much more important that those above us drop points, we still need Trannie, Donnie, Sheffield and Brentford (hope for a draw when they meet trannie) to draw or lose. Even with 19 games to go I believe it's going to be two from the present 5 encumbrants for the automatic places.

Big test for them at Brentford, but hope they get the draw and then the Mighty reds to overcome.

On another topic the Gas will be moving out of twerton park and building a new stadium, all approved by their council. Our council seem to have no interest in the future development of our beloved football club, sad really that this has now dragged on since the days of Brady's interest with no progress made at all.

Old Town Robin & Jockster, yes I remember those days with great affection, our youngsters ran rings around the opposition when our bone hard pitch resembled the beach at Weston-Super-Mare hahaha.
yeah, I think you are right Newbury, there was more sand than snow

Saturdays game might be a doubt, forcast is a possible blizzard coming in on Friday and Saturday. Even if the pitch is kept snow free then there is the issue with the paths and car park. All to do with health & safety, it wouldn't have been an issue 20 odd years ago , but hey ho sign of the times sigh !![/p]
Forget 'elf n safety the club would probably be vilified & fined nowadays for using under age slave labour - bonkers.[/p]
Newbury Robin. What a winder that was snowed on Boxing Day and then froze solid for 3 months.
Jockster, not sure how we managed to get the pitch playable for jan 12th, but I do remember the pitch was a blanket of snow and yes you are absolutely right it started on Boxing day and when I met up with my mates at the Lucarno on Boxing dat evening the ones living at Lydiard and Purton had to make an early departure or they would not have made it home. No problems for us Pinehust boys a stroll in the park to walk a few miles in those days. Taxi's who could afford them on £2 7/6 a week.
OTR - ah the old Locarno talk about all our yesterdays. You must be a bit older than me - not quite old enough for the Locarno in 63 but certainly had a few good nights up there in later years.
Jockster, I'm 66, in those days there were two halves to the entertainment, when the big band were playing for the ballroom dancers we would retreat to the bar or get our wrist stamped for a pass out to go over to the Bell for a bevie, then back into the dance hall to break up the girls dancing round their handbags. Paid on Thursday and we were usually broke by Monday, but always had Saturday night to look forward too.

Ah, but what if Coventry come through with a storming run and pip us for second place Don? We might get to the end of the season and prefer a Tranmere win! Too early to get fussed about other teams' results I reckon. If we keep winning the rest will take care of itself anyway.
Up the Sky Blues Den,let's see if they do your storming run now??????????
Haha! I wasn't saying they'll do it Don - just that there's a long way to go and anything can happen. Coventry could go on that storming run; Tranmere could drop like a stone.
