SWINDON boxer Kelvin Young admits his next fight could make or break his professional boxing career.

Young returns to action on March 9 at Swindon’s Oasis Leisure Centre when the former Penhill boxer will defend his Southern Area super middleweight title.

Defeat is not an option for the 25-year-old after he lost an eliminator for the English middleweight title against Tony Hill last October.

The Keith Mayo Promotions boxer is desperate to prove himself at the top domestic level and admits another slip-up will likely dash those dreams.

“This next fight is definitely a must-win,” admitted Young.

“I made a lot of mistakes in my last fight and obviously I was very disappointed not to get a shot at the English title.

“I can’t wait to defend my Southern Area title and get my confidence back again. I want to defend it a couple of times before I think about stepping up to the next level.”

A shot at the English or British title is Young’s ultimate aim and the boxer knows his next few fights are crucial if he is to reach that level.

Young said: “This is my second chance to crack it at the next level.

“It’s make or break for me.

“I want to fight for the English and British titles, whether I win is another matter, but I want to fight at that level.

“Winning the Southern Area title is a big achievement in itself but I want to achieve more. I think there is more to come from me and I feel a lot stronger at super middleweight.”

An opponent is yet to be named but Young says he is after a tough test, adding: “I don’t want an easy fight. I want to jump back in at the deep end with some kind of a name again.

“I’d like to get a decent scalp on my record.

“The plan is to do a couple of 10 rounders before I move up to the next level again.”

Reflecting on his loss to Hill, Young claims he knows where he went wrong and that he has tightened up his defence since the knockout.

“I forgot the gameplan against Tony Hill,” he said.

“You live and learn. When he got cut I traded punches with him because I was worried about it going to the scorecards.

“I’ve worked on my defence and watched that fight several times.

“I feel confident and can’t wait to get back in the ring again.”

The KM Promotions show will also feature Swindon boxers Lawrence Bennett and Danny O’Reilly while former Paddy Fitzpatrick Boxing Academy amateur Joe Beeden will make his professional debut on the bill.

Also on the undercard will be Bicester’s Daza Usher, Lydney duo Chris Higgs and Lews Van Poetsch, Gloucester’s Todd Roberts, Bath’s Mike Rose, Malmesbury’s Joe Hughes and exciting Reading prospect Tamuka Mucha.

There will be a press launch for the show on Friday at the Horseshoe Gym, Greenbridge Road at 7pm. Tickets cost £35 standard and £60 ringside.
