A SPRINT finish saw Charles Pennington take victory in an extremely muddy Rough ‘n’ Tumble multi-terrain race.
The unattached athlete out-kicked Avon Valley Runners Michael Towler to win by three seconds in a superb time of 1:07.43, with the unattached Paul Pallister in third.
Following the start outside the village hall in Milton Lilbourne, Pennington and Towler had opened up a decent lead by the time the first mile was out.
And they were locked together in battle until Pennington edged to victory in the closing stages.
Some 600 runners took part in the 10-mile race, with the women’s crown going to Chichester Runners’ Fay Cripps in 1:21.35, placing her 36th overall.
More than four minutes behind was Samantha Kelly of Wootton Bassett Hounds (1:25.59) with Hardley Runners’ Sue Sleath third in 1:26.37.
