Di Canio praises Spencer role
6:00am Saturday 26th January 2013 in Sport By Sam Morshead
Phil Spencer (left) and Paolo Di Canio (right)
PAOLO Di Canio has praised Phil Spencer for his efforts in finding a new buyer for the club, insisting his agent “cares about the cause”.
Spencer, who plays a major role in player recruitment at the County Ground, has been intimately involved in the discussions with potential new investors after Swindon’s majority shareholder, Andrew Black, confirmed he wants to sell a large chunk of his 98 per cent stake in the club.
With a low public profile, Town fans do not know much about Spencer but Di Canio stressed that he has been a major figure in the talks of recent days.
He said: “He and Russell (Backhouse, Swindon Town director) together work very hard and that has to let all the people know, if there was some doubt, that even if it isn’t his job he cares about the cause.
“Like me he felt the cause straight away, because we are very close friends. Not only does he work for me but we are very close friends and he felt the cause. When he discovered there was a problem with members of the board straight away at the beginning of the season, he was down.
“The fact that we did a very good job last year and started very well meant it was a shame to discover this. He said to me ‘why can’t we find a way to help this club and this environment, the fans and the people because there is a big opportunity’.
“There is a big opportunity to keep going and do something special and maintain the plan we have here. They work so hard.
“Every day I wake up in the morning and then I receive a phone call which makes me think very positively. Obviously nothing is done but I’m happy because in the last few days every bit of news I’ve had was positive. We move one step forward.”
A deal could be completed as early as next week, as the relevant parties aim to agree a takeover and sign heads of terms before the end of January.
A domestic consortium is still believed to be the front-runner but the Advertiser understands three other potential new investors remain interested, one of which already has a major say in the running of a professional football club in Europe.
Sir William Patey, the current Town chairman, is expected to step down from his position as and when a buyer is found.
The Adver understands Patey’s resignation was discussed by the Robins’ board last weekend, while it is likely that any new owner would want to appoint their own chairman upon succession at the County Ground.

Come on then Football League rag, make a headline out of that!!
Can't hear anyone shouting about this one, yet surely this is a far greater issue than our £13m total debt which is held entirely by the owners.
This merely goes to show how well our club is actually being run, albeit the investment is to build for the future, but at least we have a reasonable chance of recouping that in a short timeframe.
Whereas, even if Cardiff do manage to reach the Prem next year they will need money to strengthen their squad so will have little or no money to reduce their debts.

They have been operating a wage bill at around 110% income for years an continued to do it while facing FIVE winding up petitions! (Granted we went over the limit this year for a month - but ours last year was always under the 55% limit)
.
This overspend included getting the likes of Ramsey and Bellemy in on loan (Bellemy apparently was on £360k a season at them) while still owing money for McCormack - who had already been sold on!!!!!
.
Unlike us where all our debt can be wiped out by our owners they can't as the article states:
.
£37.4m was due to Malaysian backer Vincent Tan and his associates, which would disappear if this was converted to shares.
.
So that only leaves £45.8m of "actual" debt then that OK!!!!
.
Why did our friends at the FL not do an article on them considering it was "aimed at the growing trend" and it clearly says if they don't go up they are screwed!
.
They clearly will go up this year - so they are cheats who have prospered as the payday will wipe it all out and have made it worthwhile for them!

We have all come to expect the worse,I did say when AF moved and he said his investment would stay I was concerned.Yet when JW was sacked and SWP appointed what with embargo that was explained away plus announcement no money the alarm bells started.
Whoever comes in the club needs to go forward in all fronts especially gate revenues and off the field activities..
I was reading about Pompey and they way they ship players in and out mmmm still the FL have said if there not out of admin they will be expelled from th FL
Makes our problems seem small????
yet tou us it'ds worrying. All I hope is behind the scenes something is afoot and all this paper B/S that we get daily will cease as to be honest we get what they want us to read nothing more or less.So here is hoping in the next week we will get the TRUE PICTURE good or bad at least we will know,we are a club for long drawn out sagas

Granted Cardiff are not alone and we are not guilt free - pre AF and co we were spending well beyond our means - but like Portsmouth we have paid with 13 years of lower league football!
.
Cardiff may well go bust too - or they could become the next Swansea without getting there the right way
.
Financial Fair Play can not come soon enough - no wage bill should ever be above your income!
.
Whether equity is included as income is debatable and both sides have a point - so the hybrid capped seems the best solution
.
By the way before it is mentioned - I know we are spending beyond our means now but this time no one is getting hurt by it as we have no creditors outside the club - if Cardiff etc were the same then fair enough - it's just they are not as we have seen with most external debt!

in 80/90's (?) was abandoned at half time due to floodlight failure. I seem to remember us 2-0 up but was it 0-0??!!
Around the same period I travelled up for a NewsYear Day match against Grimsby Town(?) when ref abandoned it on 23mins (?) almost immediately after Kevin Watson had put us 1-0 up.
I wasn't able to reuse my ticket for either rearranged fixture due to distance to travel.

There is rain the temperature is warmer and its a disgrace they have been allowed to call this game off. we all know why as Ronnie Moore had some key players out.
Again we are the only team in the league without a game and yes their is a conspiracy going on.
i texted a work mate today who lives near tranmere and he says its light rain and warm, Tranmere have played the numbers and worked the weather to their advantage to remove the snow from the covers which acts as insulation was just pathetic and the head groundsman should be sacked as they all should know you leave it on as a layer to stop frost from getting into the soil. He was obviously told to do so by the powers that be.Like others have said they have injuries to key players. And the fact that so many other teams have kept games on like rotherham which had a lot more snow and many more teams in league 1 and 2 and the conference are on.
I think its very very fishy!!!!

I totally agree with you Ramsbury Red. The worse thing that ever happened to fottball was Sky tv. It made the ''top'' clubs feel like kings with over-paid, talentless players from abroad instead of buying home-grown players or bringing on their own through their academies. Wages and transfers went through the roof and the smaller clubs tried to keep up with them with was plainly stupid. We all want success but I want my club to survive.
These days every other Bumpkin from Penzance to Aberdeen is a closet supporter of Manchester United, so they don't follow their own local team anymore.

As for Patey - I wouldn't expect anything other than a resignation from him after the sale as he is in on a commission based position and has no footballing interest in Swindon Town whatsoever.....can't imagine any new consortium wanting the alleged blood sucking leech there anyway.

Let's see if L.Orient's pitch can be kept up to scratch ready for Tuesday...at least there are no public holidays and they don't have too many injuries at the moment.
:-)
What ?? cry baby Hearne, Pot-toss extroudinaire ,no injuries, that game will be fine, and I'll bet if Trannies were playing a cup match against L'pool the game would have been on.
Hope you're well Wiz!!?

By the way...seems strange to me but:

i've got a friend around Tranmere way all the local league games are on today so s professional club like Tranmere call theirs off i dont care what anyone ssays Tranmere have pulled the wool over the FA's eyes here.
I think its very very fishy!!!!
...
One of the two Tranmere supporting friends lives at least 1.5 miles from the ground and he could not dispute that a freak weather pattern could have hit the ground but left him and his family on warm yet soggy ground...but wait those defending the postponement went onto mention that it would be waterlogged then!?....well again he could not dispute that a monsoon and floods from all the meltwater had nearly washed away the Tranmere pitch yet leaving nothing more but a few puddles more local to his own micro-climate!!
----.
Come on folks maybe we should trust all those who dispute this and almost anything else they read eh!?...NAH!!
----.
This one stinks as much as the other match we're not allowed to mention!

Regarding the ball-boy incident with Chelsea someone mentioned that it was a good job it was Hazard as Torres would have missed him, Cole would have shot him and Terry would have sh4gged him!!

Perhaps the FL should consider,
If a home team cannot field the game due to weather or weather related problems and the away team can, then said game should be played at the away venue.
If neither side can field the game then a re-arranged game can be arranged.
This would prevent some teams becoming victims of fixture congestion.
This should then encourage clubs and their groundsmen to be more proactive with covers etc and looking forward to possible weather scenarios
That would surely bring an end to any conspiracy theories etc.

Snow in Britain,
The only thing that settles here and doesn't claim benefits.
Just watched the Lance Armstrong interview and he has lied to so many people, makes you wonder now if he ever did land on the moon..........
For all of you who received a bok from me at Christmas, they are due back in the library on Monday.
I'm a bit disappointed with Richard on BBC West weather. He has just issued a yellow snow warning, a bit childish really.
I told the doctor I was having trouble with my hearing, he asked me what were the symptoms, well, I told him they are a yellow cartoon family.

London Red wrote: Cardiff are the real cheats and have been for years chasing the Premiership payday with the view to use that to wipe it all out - next year they will get £70m just for finishing bottom before the parachute payments kick in to keep them earning more than now just via them for FOUR years! . They have been operating a wage bill at around 110% income for years an continued to do it while facing FIVE winding up petitions! (Granted we went over the limit this year for a month - but ours last year was always under the 55% limit) . This overspend included getting the likes of Ramsey and Bellemy in on loan (Bellemy apparently was on £360k a season at them) while still owing money for McCormack - who had already been sold on!!!!! . Unlike us where all our debt can be wiped out by our owners they can't as the article states: . £37.4m was due to Malaysian backer Vincent Tan and his associates, which would disappear if this was converted to shares. . So that only leaves £45.8m of "actual" debt then that OK!!!! . Why did our friends at the FL not do an article on them considering it was "aimed at the growing trend" and it clearly says if they don't go up they are screwed! . They clearly will go up this year - so they are cheats who have prospered as the payday will wipe it all out and have made it worthwhile for them!Good comment, but effectively just highlights the lunacy of soccer finance generally. There are very few exceptions, generally speaking the higher up the leagues you go, the bigger the debt, and if you analysed it as a business, professional football is not viable. * Blame the tv money, and the greed/desperation for success.

Yeah, they are a cheating side with scum fans (will never forget or forgiving one of their yobs throwing my mate's disabled kid out of his wheel-chair when we last had them in town), but let's focus on Swindon a bit more.
Besides, we'll be around for a lot longer than the Blueturds. Word is that they will go bust soon and have to reform in the Southern Leag...

Sir William Patey ? Nailed on certainty to feature in Washbag's "Hall of Shame"
when his qualifying period expires. Did nothing to endear himself to the fans quite the contrary. His dispassionate interviews on Radio Wiltshire were woeful. Diplomat ??? Football's certainly not your calling Sir WP
