Town blocked in moves for three transfer targets
6:00am Friday 1st February 2013 in Sport By Sam Morshead
SWINDON Town were unable to complete loan moves for three transfer targets last night, as the Football League was unwilling to ratify the deals.
Terms had been agreed with Cheltenham midfielder Marlon Pack and Charlton pair Bradley Wright-Phillips and Danny Green, after all three had visited the County Ground during Thursday to discuss their potential switches to Wiltshire.
Pack’s deal was mooted as being a loan move leading to a permanent switch in the summer, with Luke Rooney joining Cheltenham until the end of the season as part of the agreement, while Wright-Phillips and Green were poised to stay for the rest of the campaign.
Pack is a technically gifted central midfielder who was part of the Robins side which reached the League Two play-off final last season. A graduate of the Portsmouth youth academy, the 21-year-old was named in the division’s team of the season last season. Town manager Paolo Di Canio is believed to have been interested in signing Pack last summer.
Winger Green has been with Charlton for 18 months after arriving from Dagenham. He has previously been with Nottingham Forest and Bishops Stortford.
Wright-Phillips started his career with Manchester City before making the switch to Southampton in 2006. He played over 100 times for the Saints, scoring 22 goals, before moving to Plymouth after three seasons.
He joined the Addicks in 2011 and notched 31 times in 72 outings, helping the London club into the Championship in the process.
At least two of the transfers were negotiated several hours before the 11pm deadline passed and the January window closed but, as the Adver went to print last night, there remained a real threat that each of the deals could be called off.
A statement issued at 12.11am this morning by Swindon read: “Swindon Town will not be adding to the squad despite agreeing terms, completing medicals and signing three players.
“The Football League have at this stage refused any new registrations and the deals cannot be completed.
Meanwhile, Chris Martin’s long stay from Norwich was not extended. The striker is eligible to feature for the Robins in the weekend trip to Crawley in League One but is expected to return to his parent club when his loan expires on Saturday evening.
It is believed that an attempt to bring Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Madine to Swindon fell through after the Owls were unable to draft in a replacement for Chris O’Grady, who joined Barnsley yesterday.
The emergency loan window opens on February 8, by which time the sale of Town should have received the appropriate approval, and the Robins should then be allowed to dip their fingers back in the transfer market.

Let’s not forget that the loan window opens in a week and all of these were loans and everything’s done as far as contracts, medicals etc, so hopefully if no-one changes their minds it’s a simple thing for the players to join us. Good idea if they come and train with us on that basis if the clubs will allow it.

Yep once the sale is rubber-stamped we should be looking at them joining us when the emergency transfer window opens next Friday (why do they insist on still calling it 'emergency'?...nothi
ng of the sort these days)
....although being honest, as all was done and dusted before the deadline you'd think that the deals should be cleared the moment it is rubber stamped as they were fully valid and complete by the deadline.

I don't subscribe to all this pessimism and doom and gloom - and am enjoying still having a football club! (IF anything goes wrong from here then I'll deal with it then and I'm not going to ruin all the time in between...happy days!!).

My puzzlement is with Andrew Black - why did he force the issue at this crucial time - why not earlier or later. For someone who said he didn't want STFC to go into admin his actions said differently.
I can liken this situation to buying a house and having planning permission for extension approved by the council all at the same.
Fingers crossed on the loans one.

Emergency loan is meant to be for emergencies but is basically the same as a normal loan. Think both Martin and Hollands came in on emergency loans.
Only problem I foresee with getting them in that way is that I thought emergency loans are a max of 3 months in length. If we end up in playoffs they would presumably be in mid may and then we could lose the 3 players for those games?

What have they really gained in monitary terms for the sale anyway? Reported to be between £4 and £500k with a large proportion up front, not all. Lets guess at between £3&£400k. There is the sell on to Pompey at around £40k. So Town could come out of that sale with around £300k cash in hand.

If these transfers are only being blocked because of FL approval of the take over, and all the correct criteria of the transfes themselves have been met then surely they should allow the players to play from the moment their checks have finished and they approve the take over. I know it has been a busy time for them because of the transfer deadline day activity, but it seems to me that this is down to somone their end not working had enough. Well a bit dissapointed but these three players are without doubt the quality that we need, BWP will bang goals in at this level, Pack for me is a great centre midfielder and one of the best players that I saw in league 2 last year, he stood out in both games against us, whilst its frustrating I can understand that a club who had bought in specialists to restructure finances and had been talking about administration are trying to sign three players, its only reasonable for the football league to want the sale done first to check they aren't allowing us to dig an even bigger hole for ourselves, I expect us to sign them all next week, did Rooney move to Cheltenham or not....

The best way forward is to support the manager and team until all the admin, by the club, the new and old owners and the FL is done and dusted.
The players must feel shell shocked and bewildered, and the last thing they need is to see all the infighting and bickering here and elsewhere, its time for us to support them both on and off the field. Obviously too, our manager must be under terrific pressure and yet he has chosen to keep his own council and has kept a low profile while all this has been going on, continuing to do his job through a time of adversity and very efficiently with three players yesterday, yet that has hardly got a mention here. Time for folk to lighten up, appreciate what people are trying to do to save this club and at the same time push it forward. They ALL get my vote.

Basically the deals are done and in place. The FL have said that they can not play until after the emergency loan window opens. Nothing to sinister they just have to dot the Is and cross the Ts For approval of the takeover it all happened to close to the transfer window. The players have had medicals and the deals been signed just waiting for FL approval.

I dont understand it's loan deals for these players even though the take over isnt complete but were not in Administration yet Pompey are and can sign players - strange rule.
Anyway if the take over doesnt happen we all need to seriously worry thinking negative as we will get hammered by the FL probably like Luton were.
This has to go through and i hope AB has a contingency in place if it doesnt he had it for Ritchie who has been made the sacrificial lamb by AB.
This club since JW left has been absolutely crap at providing us with details and Patey is a joke if he's a diplomat but as i've said before he probably treats football fans with contempt.
Lets do the business on the pitch tomorrow at Crawley and i hope this doesnt effect the players on the pitch but i'm hoping with Paolo at the helm he wont let them get affected by it.

Black was the owner, and wants to sell the club.
New owners found, negotiations take place. Sale agreed.
Due diligence reveals a "current account" cash shortfall that will see the club run out of money while the take over is taking place.
Discussions take place on how to bridge that gap. Neither side has "ready cash" at that point in time to put in. Sale of a player is discussed by old and new owners and reluctantly agreed.
Black as the out going owner sells Ritchie, as he is entitled to do. The funds come in almost immediately making the day to day running of the club possible by keeping it solvent.
Club sold, paperwork sent to FL for them to ratify new owners. Technically now the club is in flux and cannot buy new players until the new owners are approved.
Jed pays in money to fund loans etc believed to be around £3M
Signings made but as Jed-the-Red not approved the new players also cannot yet be approved but will be if he is, and that is how we could could sell but not buy or loan new players until ratification day.

the Ritchie sale went ahead with no issues because Black and the old board were still in charge then; the takeover deal was announced later that day.
The FL has to complete its fit and proper tests and it would be impossible to do these in 24 hours. You wouldn't want the people running football in this country to just wave anyone through and allow them to become owners?
You would have expected the club to be aware of the circumstances beforehand, but maybe they were? By pressing ahead and filing the deals on time, they might have staved off interest from other clubs. We were in competition with MK Franchise for Green apparently.
The 'Emergency' loan window is badly named, as outside the PL loans can still be secured for a month starting on 8 Feb. It might also be possible that the FL ratifies these loan deals once the takeover is approved, whatever date that might be.
The Adver could have helped yesterday by appraising everyone of the rules and circumstances, rather than reporting all the other deals by clubs in which we have no interest.
I'm a bit surprised the club feels it can add to its wage bill. If the monthly bill is in excess of £200,000-300,000 and the club losing £100,000 a week, then how can we afford more?!

They must be aware of why that failed and have changed tactics accordingly for the Swindon attempt.
They must have put in a bit of money too if we are after the three players in question, although in reality we are simply replacing Ritchie with Green, Hollands with Pack, and Benson with BWP. Wages of L Rooney also off the books with the Pack switch. Presumably Martin will now return to Norwich, although maybe not after the attempt to get Madine in failed. So if it had all come off it may have been 5 out 4 it's not like we have gone spending crazy.

Only person to blame Is Black for creating all this last minute rush and panic.
I do have some sympathy with Black though because he didn't want to lose more of his vast fortune. Having said that he could have made his desire to sell the club a little sooner and taken longer over the sale.
There again this process may have forced the sale of another of our "stars" to cover running costs.
Just be grateful we still have a club, be grateful we are not in administration, be grateful we have the best manager outside the Premiership and be grateful we have a great team that are flying in third place in the league.
Once we get these three players in place it'll be a matter of weeks before we hit top spot.

But we should be able to get these players early next week and A at the moment is back away in that cupboard.

I do think we need to calm down over the new owners. They are not in place yet until the FL has sanctioned them as OK, so why all the name calling when it does nothing to further their cause. Without them we are dead, buried and gone. As for Black we do not know his private circumstances, and he was obviously under pressure to sell, his club, his money, his choice.
I think some are being a little impatient and need to take a deep breath. No surprise here that the transfers have not been sanctioned as we are, as I said yesterday, in limbo until the take over has been ratified.
All talk of funds should be forgotten for the time being. If they are not mega rich but have the funds to see us through to the end of the season that should be enough. We can assess the situation then and set budgets according to our pockets.
We have been spoilt recently and may need to accept that we may have to continue by living within our means. It may mean a few socks staying on but we will have a football club to support every Saturday.
On a more positive note, the signings that failed do indicate that the new people are keen to go for it this season. We can help with our full support for the team, manager and new board.

Terrier we may not actually be adding to the wage bill as we do not know what percentage we are paying of the new trio - we have seen from our own loaned out players sometimes this is very very low if any at all (we also saw that with Murrey last year)
.
So with Ritchie and Benson gone (2 big earners) and also Rooney going as part of the Pack deal we may break even or even reduce our wage bill
.
We are also not losing £100k a week - that is over £5m a year!!!!
.
We are apparently losing about £30k a week - which is in line with our average losses of £1.5m over the past few seasons

Thats why people are interested as that is easily made up by going up - £4m in TV money alone equates to £77k a week and that is before Gate Receipts, Sponsorship and merchandising is taken into account!

The fact the club has signed a player of Bradley Wright-Phillip's standing - subject to approvals - suggests that they are not looking to drift along in the way that we have become used to.
We don't know yet how good the new owners will turn out to be, but their intentions look very positive. That's all we can judge them on as things stand.

3> We didn't go into administration.
4> We are still third in the table.
5> We are unbeaten in 8 games.
6> We have the best defence, scored most goals and have the best goal difference in the league.
7> Even if we sign no one if we get lucky with injuries we still have a big chance of winning the league.
8> We've agreed the signing of 3 potentially excellent players to bolster our squad, including BWP who has scored a hat-full at this level.
9> Like others I've got Williams each way at 66-1 to be top goalscorer in the league.
10> Like Grim and others I still have a major chance on collecting on us for the title.
11> Like a player who doesn't want to play for the club, best the owner departs too.

If you knew the truth you would indeed agree that no transfers took place! At the moment, things are looking better, but it is Swindon Town. who knows.
You are at best just a wind up merchant or at worst a supporter of anyone but Swindon Town. Whatever you are you give me a giggle but sadly there are others on here that take your sh1t as gospel and get into a real mental state and are in danger of having nervous breakdowns or coronary events. But you won't care..

1950 - the ripped out kitchen was reflected in the price as it was reduced by £10m - via the liabilities being written off! . Terrier we may not actually be adding to the wage bill as we do not know what percentage we are paying of the new trio - we have seen from our own loaned out players sometimes this is very very low if any at all (we also saw that with Murrey last year) . So with Ritchie and Benson gone (2 big earners) and also Rooney going as part of the Pack deal we may break even or even reduce our wage bill . We are also not losing £100k a week - that is over £5m a year!!!! . We are apparently losing about £30k a week - which is in line with our average losses of £1.5m over the past few seasons . Thats why people are interested as that is easily made up by going up - £4m in TV money alone equates to £77k a week and that is before Gate Receipts, Sponsorship and merchandising is taken into account!
The reply to your kitchen anology was 'tung in cheak'.
However, I refer to my earlier post on the Ritchie situation and the money we got for him.
If these new guys were serious about the championship, and a a gesture of intent and good will to the fans, surely they could have put their hands in their pockets for that kind of money up front for the reasons I stated.
It would have protected their investment any way as Ritchie would be worth 3 to 4 time what we got for him as a Championship player.

Hopefully the consortium, whoever they may be, will have learnt from the failed Luton attempt and will not be trying the same trick twice.

Time for folk to lighten up, appreciate what people are trying to do to save this club and at the same time push it forward. They ALL get my vote.

The sale of Ritchie, although painful, will have bought us time for the worst case and give us a bit of breathing space should the search for new owners have to start again.

It still all seems strange though, and the sooner we know more about the new consortium and any debt write-offs, the better.
I know some clubs pay the wages of players they are loaning out to smaller clubs, but I doubt very much if Cheltenham or Charlton have much money or are big enough clubs to pay the wages instead of us. But the proportions could be anything between 0 and 100% of course.
We're going to have to let it go as Ritchie is gone, but the true cost to Andrew Black of keeping the club going for one more month would be the club's losses, not the wage bill, in a month. So he has saved £100k, against which the club has 'lost' value from Ritchie of between £300,000-800,000 depending on which stories and figures you believe. It's a shame no-one was able to find a way of bridging that gap as it has cost the club dear.

The repetition of the same question here is bewildering. The sale of Matt Ritchie.

Until we know their status for sure, I am very glad that the Football League are doing their duty in protecting us and the game in general. Who wants to be happy for a few days and then find that we have no club left? That might be an extreme scenario but it's not completely impossible. As to the question "why are we allowed to sell but not buy?", I would have thought the answer is obvious.
You may well be right and I suspect most of us have a little unease about all this, after all, it is Swindon.
Best bet is to wait and see but the lack of comment from the club is not helping.

If everything proves to be fine then I'm confident that the three loan deals can still go through in the emergency loan window. If the takeover is not approved by the Football League, then we have far greater problems ahead.

Good morning, I come bearing some good ish news. My info today is the Football legaue were indeed 100% right to halt us from doing any business yesterday, but the good news is that the C are now set to take over, but in true Swindon ways, the whole take over is a real mess! But we should be able to get these players early next week and A at the moment is back away in that cupboard. It's a real mess but further forward than it has been, so fingers crossed, this gets sorted and the football league will have no issues. If you knew the truth you would indeed agree that no transfers took place! At the moment, things are looking better, but it is Swindon Town. who knows.

It appears that nobody is steering the ship & it may be for legal reasons but if JM is a man of the fans I would have hoped we would have heard something from him.
Cheltenham do not have anything like the worries that we have yet they were still considerate to their fans by posting a statement at 10.00am re MP & another one at 11.23 by Marlon Pack himself

I suspect you are probably right, but it is clear that there is still work to be done, not just to get the transfers done but to ratify the sale of the club to the new consortium.
We were told a deal was done and we would sign new players, when in fact neither appears to be the case.
Until this is done and dusted then I think it is only natural to be a little uneasy.

We have already got a long standing arrangement for tomorrow, but had that not been the case then I would have tried to make arrangements to go to give support. There is little or nothing the club can say given its all in the hands of the FL. While they are doing their bit what can the club say, nothing we don't already know. Jed can't say anything as its not his place to comment just yet. I'm hopeful that by this time next week we should all be happy and have something to be happy about. I'm really trying to see the maximum amount of "Good" in all this, as its a better place to be. In fairness as well to the whole of the club employees no matter what their role, I think they have managed and conducted themselves in an exemplary manner during this very difficult week. Full credit to all of them and to manager man for keeping cool, calm and collected especially last night. Beware of the post match interview, warts and all, I'll bet , lol.

If we had signed those three players on loan, presumably we would have been legally obliged to pay their wages - or an agreed part of them - and other costs for the period of the loans. So the way I see it is the League are happy for the club to increase its resources by getting players off the wage bill and bringing in transfer fees, but they do not want to risk sanctioning further player expenditure until they know the club is sound enough to meet it. I am not going to write off the prospective new owners before they've got their feet under the table but I think the Football League are absolutely right to excercise caution. The future of our club is at stake here.
Basically, it takes up to 5 'normal' working days to say if a proposed director is allowed to take their post. As far as I can see, there is nothing about money involved in the decision.

Black sold Ritchie as he was legally entitled to as the club was still under his control. The Ritchie deal was all done and dusted before the paperwork was submitted and the ownership changed. Once the ownership paperwork was submitted then we have to wait for the FL. Once the FL have agreed to Jed then the loans can go ahead as Jed is then responsible.

People on here are asking for a statement from the club ? saying what exactly ? The employees at the club are no doubt bound by rules and regs. they cannot tell us anything we don't already know. Some things have been explained many times over yet still the same people bang out the same questions or statements that are way wide of the mark. I had already made arrangements for tomorrow some months ago, had I not I would have willingly been at Crawley in full voice and song getting behind the team because right now that is the best thing to do, and show them, the management team and anyone/everyone else that we are still behind the players etc. The best thing to do is show our support as opposed to all the gloom and doom here. The admin stuff is out of our hands and we can't change, later or influence any of that. As and when the new guys take charge I hope a few here will apologise for the comments made over the last few days. At first I thought they looked a bit cowboy but further research as others have done proves otherwise. I wish them every success and the club a bright future.
Why can't they tell us anything we don't already know?
We are in the dark and wish we weren't - is that unreasonable. No need to get uppity about it just because you are happy to wait for news.
They released a statement last night, why can't they release a further one today with an update?
It's not doom and gloom, it is a reasonable concern as we don't know what's going on - not a reason to get pious.

He won't be chairman and even if he did sit on the board (which he may not) he would still only be one of 5 or 6

If Diamond Mike is one - well that would be totally different!

Pewsham, I agree with you. Last night's statement was simply not enough. If the club believes it's just a question of time, why wasn't that said in the statement or at least clarified today? It's not the failure to sign these players that bothers me; it's what it might indicate about the general situation. If the prospective new owners see no cause for alarm, surely it wouldn't be too difficult to say so? Otherwise, there is a legitimate concern that the deal will not be approved - and we all know where the club would be heading then.

Hope you are well.
The truth is it was an agreement between Black and McCrory jointly to sell/give away Ritchie. (delete as applicable). As you say it was done and dusted as part of the 'deal' and now history.
What I can't get my head around is why yer new man didn't have at least the good grace to tell the manager? What kind of foundation does that get the relationship off with? If that's not an Foxtrot Oscar, what is?

Wiz, I take your point. If you are right, what the hell was the club doing wasting everyone's time yesterday trying to do deals they had no authority to conclude?

The fact they haven't really come clean and advised us of the next part of the process makes me and a lot of others nervous and may suggest all is not well.

Stop worrying about the F/L this is normal procedure and always takes a few days. It's not been a problem for us before because we didn't have impending transfers, in fact we were under a transfer embargo during one takeover so we wern't looking at getting players in.
Just chill and have patience, there is no problem, just due dilligence (probably lol )

Seems to me the whole timing of events has been out of sync, thought they brought in some financial experts to make sure everything was satifactorily concluded, well not much so show from that then..
Someone mentioned 5 working days to ratify if a Director meets the requirements, so that will be next Wednesday before we know where we stand. Two important games to be played before then, so really hope we can maintain the challenge with what we've got and just concentrate on what we do on the field and not stress ourselves wiyh the mess off the field..

Dear oh dear. Reasons to be cheerful:
1> We still have the Emperor leading us. (How I've no idea but this is the single most important thing).
2> We didn't sell anymore players we wanted to keep.
12> Yesterday morning my instinct told me we were in real trouble and would lose players and the manager. Not 100% sure we are in the clear but has to be better than yesterday.
13> Point 1 We still have the Emperor.
Back to back to back promotions coming. Watching a managerial legend. Build a statue of him when he takes us into the Premiership.
Title secured with the three signings I'm sure, people still snigger at us.
