SWINDON TOWN: Town could field 13-man squad at Colchester
4:00pm Monday 4th February 2013 in Sport By Sam Morshead
Paolo Di Canio has very few players at his disposal at present
SWINDON Town could travel to Colchester tomorrow with as few as 13 fit players, manager Paolo Di Canio has revealed.
Following the return of Chris Martin to his parent club Norwich at the culmination of his loan spell in Wiltshire, Di Canio's options are severely limited at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.
Joe Devera and Miles Storey are out with hamstring problems, Troy Archibald-Henville is recovering from a knee operation, Louis Thompson has a minor knock, Aaron Oakley is on international duty with Wales Under 21s while a further unnamed player is facing a late fitness test.
Di Canio has ruled out the possibility of taking Luke Rooney or Lee Cox with him to Essex, while he does not want to blood any further members of the youth team squad.
“On Saturday we travelled with 17 players. One or two are not really completely ready for the game - Jay (McEveely) for example was the first game and he had difficulty with the game but this is natural. We saw it with Tommy Miller when he came back from his injury," said Di Canio.
“Tomorrow it will be even worse. We will travel with 14. A team five points from the top will be travelling with 14 tomorrow. We know when it happened to another club, at the County Ground - Portsmouth. You know how they were in big problems.
“Now a club who is close to the top on Saturday traveled with 17, with a kid not really fit and four players with a virus.
“Now we are going to travel with 14, with some problems with a player who will go on the bench. That is our situation and we know who we have to thank.
“I hope we have 14 because there is a possibility that there will be 13. We have some little problems but I can’t have many options so I have to hope my players are ready to play even with some problems."

Also Bradley wright Phillips was on the Charlton bench Saturday so looks as if this good player won't be coming once the takeover happens.

Fodders,
Macca
Ward
Flint
De Vita
Roberts
Ferry
Miller
Navarro
Collins
A Rooney
Bedwell
LThompson
Doubtfuls,
McEverley
N Thompson
Williams
Could be a little bit of kidology from Paolo, but I do think we might struggle to field more than 16 if he doesn't want to include consider Cox or L Rooney.

Without these assurances PDC SHOULD resign. He has his reputation to think about.
Like everyone else I hope he stays, but we need to see the colour of Jeds money, and some honest appraisal of where he wants STFC to be in the future.
Final thought - if Jed does not plan to back PDC into the Championship, why did the board accept his offer?
Other bidders may have taken longer to get a deal in place, but perhaps their offers were better in the long run.
Will we ever know?

Jed needs to be talking to PDC right now. He needs to explain the make up of his consortium, their planned relationship with PDC and what financial plans he has for the future. Getting to the Championship will cost, but staying there will cost even more, as the days of free transfer and loan players will become the exception rather than the rule.
Without these assurances PDC SHOULD resign. He has his reputation to think about.

I'm getting the impression that Cox is likely to be more of a liability than a benefit on the bench unless he is included in the 'tactics' ragrding the rest of the numbers - he should have 15 for tomorrow at least.....
.
I'm on my down tomorrow now and FULLY expecting a performance and a half despite the condition of their pitch.

Sale will be ratified Wed/Thur and loans will now arrive on Friday!!..Happy Days!

Rooney the pokey fans warned us that he needs to deliver more as his ego is bigger than his talent at the moment, Cox did well in patches last season but had an awful lot of MiA games last season.

Smacks of proving a point but just put a few youngsters on the bench to make up the numbers if it is that bad. Can't blame Black for the players feeling ill. I believe we are paying Cox and Rooney a salary so why can't they be involved?
I would start Navarro and Adam Rooney tomorrow and give Willo and Ferry a rest if possible and its a bit more beach football.
Wouldn't it be great though to see Paolo himself up front? Now that would bring in the casuals. Master stroke from Black, gradually wipe out the squad so Paolo has to don his boots, quids in! (Only joking of course)

It's no different to Redknapp naming 2 sub keepers the other week. The stupid thing is, the QPR board fell for his little stunt and splashed a load of cash they can't afford.
Maybe we'd have more than 13 players available if Di Canio hadn't brought so many in only to ship them out again?

If Paolo chooses to go to Colchester with 13/14 that is his choice and not the fault of the board. He has two professional footballers who are paid to work for Swindon town available to him to utilise. Risking injury does not come into it at all, they are paid to play for our club unless out on loan which they are not. Also any player, starting or squad player risks injury every day they train so its not really a reason. Simple fact is they should both be used in the squad otherwise why are we wasting money paying players "not" to play?
I don't understand why people are surprised by this current situation. Big money was paid out last season and continued to be paid out this season. Average attendance at the County Ground has been around 7000-8000 which needs to be higher to stand any chance of sustaining the high wages and fees paid out.
If you as a person earnt £100 a week and spent £200 on your shopping a week what do you think would happen over a period of time?
Simple facts are that getting to where we are on the income streams were never sustainable over a period of time and we have now reached the point where the spending has had to stop or the club goes bust.
I would rather have a mid table league one team to watch living within its means than chase the dream and go bust!
Have patience, see what happens with the new owners when it eventually gets sorted but for the love of god Paolo use common sense and use Cox and Rooney (both your signings costing a combined total of over £300,000)

Interesting to see how the Adidas, FIFA, Samsung, 442 deals will fare as obviously tied up by the last lot who were very well connected. With PDC I'd imagine we could command more in terms of sponsorship than without but at this level it's not silly money. We need some really clever management on the pitch too. Can PDC actually work within a budget? Can he identify young, hungry players to do a job in a system that can stay in the league we are in? Can he deal with the niggles and stop them becoming a pay-off situation? Can he mature as a manager in terms of slating players in favour of being diplomatic. Fods a great signing and Williams and Collins look decent as does Devita but percentage wise too many duds. Our recruitment needs to change as does man management. Get this right and he can be thought of as a REAL prospect. Continue as before and he's a Chairman's nightmare but will get jobs off of his name in the lower leagues. He's still a young manager and loves the game but needs to adapt and keep growing.

If you factor in the money that has been wasted on pay offs and wages for the likes of Magera, Lanzano, Commazi, Atiku, Rooney, Cox, Risser to name just a few perhaps there would still be money left in the pot.
I would love to see Town up in the Championship but lets be realistic, if we have now hit the bottom of our piggy bank and struggling to afford what we have, unless this new consortium are unbelievably rich how on earth will we afford Championship football as there are some serious big hitters in there?!

Hopefully the loan signings will be here by the end of the week, but if you've just taken over a football club do you really want a manager holding a gun to your head and demanding you splash the cash or he'll walk out? If you cave in, he'll do it the next time, and the next time, and all the time a large number of fans are posting, "Well done, Paolo, sticking up for the fans" or whatever. No club could carry on in that situation as it's a recipe for disaster. Sooner or later they'd suspect he'd throw a tantrum and be off anyway.
As for the shopping analogy, I disagree with your point. If someone's handing you £200 per week, you'd go to Waitrose or M&S and not have to worry. If that person then needs to tighten the purse strings, and only gives you £50 a wek in future, you go to Lidl.
You haven't been "shafted" - there was money available then, and it's not now. If you'd kept a little of that £200/wk back you might have a bit more to play with now.
We don't know if Di Canio was "lied" to, i.e. he was told there was money but there wasn't really. It's equally possible that there was money available but the old board needed to cut back - perhaps they've lost money in outside investments over the last couple of years and simply could not continue to fund the Town as they were. Maybe they decided that the policy of chucking a fortune on players' wages and agents' fees (or is it just a single agent?) was unsustainable on the gates we're getting?

For all that Mr black has done, I think he could of been very vindictive in his final days, causing us to lose one our best players, stolen from us, and maybe PDC...although I think he will stay...
