SWINDON TOWN: Di Canio cool on Martin stay

Chris Martin Chris Martin

PAOLO Di Canio says he no longer has any desire to further Chris Martin's stay in Swindon.

The striker returned to parent club Norwich on Saturday at the end of his loan spell, having informed Di Canio that he has been made aware of new opportunities for him at a higher level.

When asked whether he would want to resign the forward in the emergency loan window, the Town boss said: “Absolutely not. He took one month to get him fit and see him as an athlete as he was in the past. Even if I had an intention to keep him, in the last few days before the transfer window finished, he said to me he had a chance or he still has a chance to move to a different club - maybe the Championship.

“How and why do I persuade a player who was telling me before he desperately wanted to stay and then in the last few days maybe received the news from his agent that he has the chance to go somewhere else.

“Thanks to him for what he has done. I wanted to keep him even if he didn’t affect my team too much. He scored one goal, he won one penalty when we were already on top with Tranmere, he challenged one ball at Bournemouth but in 12 games it was very, very poor in some way.

“I was sure he would give something more until the end because he’s got quality and I believe that I could help him, but once he told me there is a chance I thought - even if he lost this chance - I didn’t want to keep him.

“The fact he had already thought about a move to another place that is not for me."

Can appreciate Paolo's frustration, investing your time in a player, waiting for him to come good and then he repays it by wanting away - fair enough, but if the player doesn't want to play for us, then there's no point trying to keep him here, especially when he's had little impact so far. Maybe time for Rooney to step up, he'll have taken some confidence from the Crawley game no doubt.

Bit of a 'seige mentality' from Paolo. Certainly can't fault his commitment given the circumstances!

4 weeks ago the match tomorrow would have been a 3 pointer but i am not so sure now. We are currently on a run similar to last seasons 10 game streak which pushed us to the top. If Paolo manages it again he will be exceeding expectations and will be in demand (think the fergie post Xmas run where United often waltz to the title).

Regarding Martin, i was impressed when i saw him play. He has good skill levels and linked the play well. I don't think we saw the best from him thought

Martin was off down the tunnel like the proverbial rat up a drainpipe on Saturday as Paolo was telling the players to acknowledge the fans so no surprise that he (Paolo) no longer wants him, probably why he was on the bench

Martin may have better options and with our club in this situation who can blame him as we currently can't sort any deals out so he can't just sit around and wait. He was honest with PDC so fair enough I say. Funny how players are suddenly poor when there is a fall out. Can see PDC upset as not much going his way at the moment. If we get 2 of the other 3 on loan then we should be ok to stay in the mix. Good luck to Martin but PDC needs people to stand up and in all fairness to Martin we are just another club to help him get fit and get a deal.

Totally understand it from Paolo but equally if you are a potential loan signing but for a club who may be going into admin...i.e. all the uncertainty...then being honest I don't blame Martin either.

At least he had the balls to tell PDC as opposed to Bostock....or so we're told.

Oh yeah, nothing against the bloke wanting to leave, but as I say if he wants to leave then it's pointless trying to get him to stay. I don't see it as a massive loss from our point of view either, as he looked like he had the potential to come good for us but didn't make a massive impact in the time he was here, probably no need for the digs by Paolo but we know that's how he is.

End of the day as a loan signing you wouldn't expect anything else as it works both ways - we'll give them a try hoping to give us a short term boost to the squad, and would be happy to send the player back if they didn't work out for us. The player hopes to get some regular football and maybe a deal, either at the loan club or elsewhere. Sometimes it works out for both parties, sometimes it doesn't. Like you say, if he didn't want to play for us at least he's been up front and prompt by saying so, we definitely don't need messing about when there's so much else going on. No hard feelings against the player anyway, it's not like we expect to sign every loan player on a permanent deal.

This is obvious I can see a number of Big clubs in the race for Martin considering the amount of goals he scored at his time at swindon ???

Definitely showed some good touches and awareness of others but just one penalty goal in 12 games or so with some poor misses as well - he hasn't set the world on fire here. If he's got a Championship club interested after this loan spell fair play to him!

Does sound odd. I think PDC gave him quite a shot a the role and it didnt work, i.e. a lack of goals. Williams and Collins have visible desire to score and I didn't see that stand-out hunger from Martin.

lacked match fitness from the times I saw him but does have something about him. Perhaps a few goals early in his loan spell things may have been different. Not sure if he is Premiership material though. Paolo has every right in my opinion to criticise players especially when you are paying them good money and they are not sticking to orders, although some times he could be more tactful!

Not a huge loss in my opinion. He just didn't seem to fit into our system. I think Benno would not only have scored more but also contributed more in the same amount of game time.

Lets hope BWP signs as that is one striker I feel would benefit from our style of play.

Big disappointment in the end - was expecting big things

Looked OK against Pompey but nothing special and then woeful against Orient and Crawley in the games I've seen in 2013

No loss as Rooney looked far more dangerous and hopefully we will have BWP soon

Them and our front boys should be enough to fire us up

Thought he showed signs of being decent but never delivered. I hoped once he was fit and scored then he would go on a run but didn't. No big loss, at this point he might as well go back as no better than what we have

I've not been to impressed with Adam Rooney up until Crawley, but he did win the penalty and took it really well. I hope he really hits form now. As for Martin, getting some game time and fit was probably his main reason to come to us, he won't be missed. Lets hope he goes to City misses a hatful.

Even spoke to nick Watkins no one is saying knows anything

The one thing I did establish is Paolo won't quit it's just not his style . He's is not happy as for the first time as manager he's not in control and he is gutted with the Richie sale

The deal is all positive and is all ok the problem is they have had some counter deal a posing the takeover from the reasons from AB saying its complicated

No facts but take over will go ahead this week with PDC as manager and 2 out of the 3 will sign as agents got involved

IMHO - I thought he looked dangerous and worked hard off the ball - sad to see him go and even sadder he didn't get a few goals that he deserved - I seem to remember 3 or 4 excellent saves from his shots and several last ditch blocking tackles....surprised by the negativity about a player who gave his all whilst on loan.
