SWINDON TOWN: New consortium want to work with Di Canio

Paolo Di Canio Paolo Di Canio

ONE of the members of a consortium poised to take over at Swindon Town has pledged to work with manager Paolo Di Canio when the sale of the club is completed.

Erroneous reports in various national newspapers of late have suggested that Di Canio and the prospective new owners of the Robins have already had a disagreement about the way Town move forward once they take control at the County Ground.

Yesterday, the Daily Mirror went so far as to state that the consortium fronted by Jed McCrory were ready to sack the Italian and replace him with a managerial partnership of Brian Stein and Mike Newell as Di Canio was too expensive to keep on.

However, the Advertiser understands the men looking to buy into the club have yet to meet personally with Di Canio - although his representatives are believed to have spoken to McCrory and other members of the group of new investors.

Despite being constrained by the terms of a non-disclosure agreement, in place until the sale of the club is finalised - which could be as early as tomorrow - McCrory chose to issue a statement exclusively to the Adver in an effort to allay fans’ fears.

It read: “I feel the need to break the NDA (non-disclosure agreement) due to the breaking story (in the Mirror).

“I have had no contact or conversation, be it email, telephone or any other means, with Mike Newell.

“We are disappointed that people are putting stories together due to the uncertainty over the situation and would like to state we are looking forward to working with Paolo Di Canio and the team going forward.

“We are working tirelessly to bring the purchase of the club to an end to allow all to return to normality.

“As a football fan I am aware of the need to end this uncertainty as soon as possible.”

The five-strong consortium’s takeover of the Robins is imminent, as members of the group await the results of their fit and proper persons test from the Football League.

The Adver has learnt that a sickness bug within the administrative body is partly responsible for the delay in the applications, although the respective parties are still pushing the sale of the club through at an extraordinary rate.

The fact Paolo Di Canio chose not to take questions from the assembled media at Colchester on Tuesday night has given some outlets the ammunition to speculate further regarding his future.

However, the Advertiser understands he will not take any major decision until he has had the chance to meet personally with Swindon’s new owners, as and when the takeover is ratified, to discuss how the club progresses.

Just re read Paolo's programme notes from the Shrewsbury game.

"What we have achieved so far this season is amazing. Now we want to take things on again and achieve what we set out to do. My word counts more than one thousand contracts. My actions are even more important."

"The best way is to keep getting results. The club is for sale and we must carry on. The determination is there and we are all very committed. The best way is for fans to come here and follow the team. Come here in numbers and persuade those people who have shown interest that the club deserve a stable future. There is a big opportunity here."

Unbeaten in 9, best defence, best attack best goal difference in the league. Do as the manager says and get down to Mecca this Saturday. Messrs Poole and Hartley are in for a thumping.

I'm telling you he ain't leaving these players and us fans until we've won this league.

Back to back to back promotions coming. Watching a managerial legend. Build a statue of him when he takes us to the Premiership...

Once more unto the pitch, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our Swindon Payers.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of whistle blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage;
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest Swindon Player.
Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof!
Fathers that, like so many Alexanders,
Have in these parts from morn till even fought
And sheathed their boots for lack of argument:
Dishonour not your mothers; now attest
That those whom you call'd fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to play. And you, good defenders,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your pasture; let us swear
That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Paolo, Swindon, and Promotion!'

Hi there Laz - In a strange way the timing may work well as IF all 3 arrive by the weekend as hoped then he'll have 10 days to work them into the squad between Hartlepool and the trip to Tranmere.

Yes, I'm surprised no one else has picked up on this, if it's true that the ratification process has been held up due to sickness at the FL it's really a poor show. They should have the wherewithal to carry on the League's essential processes.

Still no news at this time is good news.
You would feel all should go ok now or at least we all hope it does.
For sayings sake if the FL give the new investors the knock back surely it would be worth AB to fund the club for the last part of the season and just maybe have a Championship Club to SELL.
No guess me dreaming again but who know´s 3rd in table 2 points adrift from top 2 with way better goal average.Still it´s wait and see, again well done to the 300 who made the away trip on a cold cold Tuesday night and is an awful place to get to from Swindon.
Last time i went there was to meet up with a former Town Player Ray Bunkel we won that night 1-0 to avoid relegation oh those days.

I have a good feeling all will go through, but AB has made it clear he will no longer fund the club, otherwise why force through the sale?

We've all been guilty of of hearing rumours & speculating, I have no doubt changes will be made, but I think for the good of the club.

As long as the takeover goes through I think we can be very optimistic about the future.

Well if you are expecting the people of Wiltshire to leave their comfy armchairs and go to the C.G then you have lost the plot.
Not my words but the words of another regular poster who would have had Richard Money as manager.

I'm with you biker, if Wiltshire people want a top footie club then they should get down to the ground and support the maestro and his boys.
Forget what has happened in the past and live for today, today we have a great manager who loves the club despite the troubles. We also have a great team and we could possbly go top on Saturday but I predict at least second.

At this moment in time it is always a bit worrying to wonder just who these new consortium members are and hope that they are all in it for the football club, the brilliant manager, the team, and most importantly us the fans. The dark days of Brady flying around in his chopper (helicopter that is) and the blood sucking leach Diamantes blimey remember him are all still too clear in the memory and we certainly do not need any rubbish like that running our club.
I will also apologize if I offended anyone last night with my postings and I was just trying to create some light relief from the waiting and waiting and waiting which one or two found to be too much for them to bare. My thoughts are it was getting far too serious on this forum lately and too many arguments and wind ups going on so just wanted to provide some entertainment.
Still we wait and now it appears the sick bug could be holding matters up and yes it seems to be always us at dear old Swindon Town or feels like that. The prayer mat is out in that the consortium are all good guys and pass the test then we can get down to trying to keep the best manager STFC have ever had. Come all Town fans we need to show Paolo and the new consortium that this club is worth saving and turn out in droves on Saturday and sing our hearts out.

Message from Sir Winston Churchill to Paolo and Jed and others-(Meeting today)

We are met together at a time when great exertions and a high constancy are required from all who cherish and sustain the Swindon cause.

Difficulties surround us and dangers threaten from this side and from that. Exultant enemies are gathering: weak friends are nervous or disheartened. Voices are raised in counsels, both equally unwise, of impatience or of lassitude.

From such a situation Paolo and the new Board, you may emerge triumphant, but to do that there will have to be, in leaders and in followers, shrewd clear plans of action, true stout-hearted comradeship, and unwearying determination!

In Paolo we trust! Be there Saturday and tell him "We are Swindon and we are going up"!

Not surprisingly it was actually the programme from the original fixture date but it included an 8 page update and a professionally printed teamsheet insert. I thought the whole thing was of excellent quality. Although I don't buy programmes very often these days I do know ours is good as I did get one earlier in the season. Would it not just be the best week end ever if we get the nod for the takeover, we find out that the consortium have some real money, Paolo has an agreeable meeting with the new owners & commits to the end of the season & the three or at least two players arrive at the County Ground.

I've been keeping an eye on the Football League site, nothing about our situation but an interesting statement re Portsmouth:
*
http://www.football-
league.co.uk/footbal
lleaguenews/20130207
/portsmouth-statemen
t_2293334_3068475
*
Basically told the Administrators to get on with it, go forward with the Supporters Trust bid, otherwise Pompey will lose its league membership.
*
Shows how long these things can take - the FL are saying there is not enough time for a new bid to go forward, get negotiated, accepted and ratified by the start of next season (a club cannot enter two seasons consecutively in Administration)

http://www1.skysport

I've been banging on for years about docking points for posting excessive operating losses.

And securing budgeted losses against owners' assets would have prevented the situation we have suffered at Swindon this past month. Although it is arguable whether investors will want to get involved as much under new, stricter financial criteria.

Depends on the t&cs of the NDA. They mainly prevent disclosure of any details of the business that would not otherwise be in the public domain. They also usually prevent disclosure of the terms of any deal.

Yes but as I said above, that's because the Administrators are already in discussion with the Pompey Supporters Trust - the FL are telling them to get on with it because there isn't enough time to chase another deal.
Sorry Ramsbury, hadn't seen your post, just typed mine in when I heard the announcement on the news.

Apparently the Football League didn't have any objection in principle to Keith Harris's consortium, but they did object to him having his hand up Orville's bottom all the time.

True jayden but their fans will be when they apply to join the English league and they have to travel to Conference North clubs.
Then if they get in the league proper and find out how far Exeter is from Glasgee.

Just out of interest a nice bit from the Pool manager on the BBC site:
.
Former defender Hughes played with Di Canio at Celtic in 1996 and has fond memories of their time together - "He's an infectious, passionate character who wears his heart on his sleeve - everything he does is for the team," he said.
"At Celtic he loved the place. That's him, its not an act, he's just an honest guy.
"He could start a fight in an empty house but he's clever enough to know how to use that.

That'll be PDC then!! :-)

If it is really correct that the takeover cannot go through due to staff sickness at the Football League, that is nothing short of an absolute disgrace!!

This could delay, if not destroy the whole deal and ultimately put us in administration.

As an aside, it potentially sinks the loan deals and the Wright-Phillips lad from Charlton in particular, whose goals would take us to automatic promotion.

Agreed SAP. This is a real bug bear of mine and annoys me more each season as fans leave in droves, irrespective of the score just to get away three minutes quicker. Complete lack of respect.

I suppose the only excuse could be if the STFC takeover is one persons project, and they've done the legwork to date and now off sick it's not really worth someone new taking it on.

Although how this is taking so long in any case is a bit odd. I'm sure Jed and the consortium are readily available to take any questions the FL auditor may have and will have any number of references ready to be checked out.

It's easily possible that any FL dept dealing with takeover compliance is relatively small. People would be moaning if they had a team of 10 or 20 people sat around doing nothing except when a club is being taken over, so it's possible that it is literally only one or two people. If they're doing it probably, it's presumably a bit specialised, or needs some specialised financial input, not just a box-ticking admin bod.
