SWINDON TOWN: Di Canio slams his 'donkeys'

SHELTER FROM THE STORM: Paolo Di Canio on Saturday SHELTER FROM THE STORM: Paolo Di Canio on Saturday

PAOLO Di Canio said his Swindon Town players should consider themselves as “donkeys” after they missed the chance to go top of League One on Saturday.

With both Tranmere and Doncaster losing, a win against rock-bottom Hartlepool would have taken the Robins to the division’s summit, but Andy Monkhouse came back to haunt his former club once again as he notched a 75th-minute equaliser after Simon Ferry had fired Town in front.

Di Canio was upset with his team’s display, as they struggled to get into any kind of rhythm in a second period during which their struggling guests found it much easier to manipulate possession.

When asked whether he was angry not to have gone top, he said: “Not for me, the lads have to think about that because they’re the protagonists. As a manager I am disappointed but they have to think. If they think ‘ah okay, nobody won, we are very close and we will see the next game’ it is for rubbish, stupid, unprofessional people.

“If they think ‘we are donkeys’ then probably they will improve again. The problem is when you feel you can behave arrogant. They have to feel hurt because they were the protagonists of an important job today.

“For this specific game they have to blame themselves and say ‘we were stupid and donkeys’. After three away games like we had, how can you not put the attention and determination in thinking this is a Champions League final.

“But this is the mistake that we made every few weeks when we played against a side that apparently can’t hurt you.

“That proves, if I’m honest, that we’re not ready for the top.

“Someone can now start to criticise my words. If we achieve what we want to achieve it is because of my mentality that I brought in.”

As mentioned before the game I really hate playing Hartlepool and then to play them as a bottom of the table side just made it worse - yet we all hoped!
...
This playing the bottom teams is why I'm glad we have to play 6 of the other top 8 sides away from home, we play better against better teams and there will be more opportunity to play a more natural game away - the pressure will be on the home side to win in order to catch us up in most cases.
...
No excuses in the next 2 home games v Bury and Preston though....6 points is a must!!

Sad day that we have fallen so far that a tinpot team like bournemouth are trying to make us a rival , I suggest you stick to Weymouth or Dorchester town which are of the same stature

Yep down there in Cocoon land and Blue Rinses they are really trying to make that the case, but stumbling over.

Even worse we encourage the stay aways to turn up , they honoured the call then we let them down again , hardly inspires any of them to fork out the hard earned to make the trek again does it , an ideal opportunity lost IMHO . On another note if we do redevelop the CG would'nt a mini Lansdown Road be perfect for the shape of the plot and to accomodate the bank while keeping the noise enclosed . COYR

- My feelings exactly, SAP. I also felt a bit worried when I saw John Hughes creating banter with everybody around him, but Paolo was the only one who did not react. I just felt Hughes was taking the pressure off his players, while all the events of the past few weeks created that bit more tension in our side.

Somehow, I don't think you will. Personally, I reckon you should be more worried about Yeovil. They're flying at the moment, and with the exception of their trip to Donny, they're heading into a run of very winnable games. All the bookies now have AFCB odds-on for promotion, and they're rarely wrong. A nice little Dorset/Somerset one-two is looking good!

If we or Boremuff don't make the autos, I'm sure we'll meet them some point in the play-offs. But I feel its odds on that one of us will give Wilson a 3rd Wembely defeat in the final.

Just hope we get our act together. This is our time to have a poor show of form, but we are still on a good run with no defeat in 11.

Boremuff have only climbed to where they are due to their 18 game run without a loss.

At the start of the season I think both clubs would have taken a top 6 finish and the lottery that is the play-offs.

Actually, Bournemouth have climbed to where they are by responding to the end of their long unbeaten run with four wins on the bounce at the same time as strengthening their squad - to the detriment of one of their closest competitors. Sorry about that! There's still a long way to go, there will be twists and turns, that's a certainty, but as I said previously, Yeovil are the team really on a roll, and they could quite easily win a few more yet before they slow down. If it's any consolation, we failed to beat Hartlepool at home too, although we did have Dumb & Dumber trying to motivate our team at that stage of the season, and you all saw what that did for us.

The mighty bournemouth will have slip ups yet and could have one tomorrow against Crewe who are quite good at home. I think these Cherry fans are getting ahead of themselves at the moment and will without doubt drop points as all other teams will. You get funny results in the last third of the season where the nerves set in and the bottom teams are fighting for everything so cherry fans so count your chickens yet.
You are due another blip and it will happen starting tomorrow hopefully.

I don't think anyone is taking anything for granted on the south coast. We could quite easily hit a bad patch - tomorrow won't be easy, then away to PNE on Saturday. Their home form isn't great, but points still have to be earned. We still have to go to Orient, where our record is terrible, and amongst all that we have visits from The Blades and The Sky Blues. Not an easy game to be seen. But, Eddie H will have us prepared as best he can, and the rest is all down to hard work and a little bit of luck. There will be some odd scorelines between now and the end of April, but from where we were after 15 games (18 points) to where we are now, we have the right to be optimistic. Good luck for the rest of the season, just watch out for those Cidermen!
