FIT-AGAIN striker Miles Storey was disappointed not to be able to make a more of an impact after returning from injury against Hartlepool.

The teenager had not pulled on a Swindon shirt since the defeat to Brentford in November due to a combination of hamstring and knee injuries, but made his return as a late substitute in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to League One’s bottom side.

The youth team product looked sharp without ever seriously troubling the visiting defence, and although he was pleased to be back Storey wanted to contribute more in a game in which Town dropped two valuable points.

“It’s very disappointing because we could have gone top with a lot of the teams around us losing, and it was a great opportunity to be up there looking down,” he said. “A draw is better than losing, but we really wanted to win.

“Before the game the manager welcomed me back to the team, and when I went on he just told me to enjoy it and try and get a goal, but I didn’t manage to get a shot in really.

“I had a little run at the end and got a cross in, but it wasn’t enough really and we couldn’t get the win.

“I’m grateful for the 10 minutes or so I got, and I enjoyed being back out there in front of a good crowd, and it was nice to be playing football again.

“I tried to do my best in my first game, and I have had a bit of a knee injury as well so I was just trying to keep it simple because it was the first game I had played in a couple of months.”

With loanee Chris Martin returning to Norwich and manager Paolo Di Canio unable to bring in any players on transfer deadline day Storey has moved up the striking pecking order, but the youngster would welcome any competition which does arrive at the County Ground between now and the end of the season.

“I welcome anyone coming in because I want to see this club in the Championship this year, and if that means people coming in and me not playing then so be it,” he said.

“But if I get my chance to play I have to take my chance and do well.

“I’m still getting there but I am starting to feel a lot more confident with my sprinting, and with a hamstring injury you have to be careful not to get a whack because you can open it all up again.”
