HELLENIC LEAGUE: Turner challenges Bassett players
6:00am Friday 15th February 2013 in Sport By Ned Payne
Wootton Bassett boss Dave Turner
WOOTTON Bassett boss Dave Turner says his players must ‘fight for every point’ as they look to secure a return to the Hellenic Premier.
The second-placed Rylands Way side have 10 games left to ensure their promotion out of Division One West and Turner’s men travel to Lydney tomorrow.
“We’ve got 10 cup finals, it’s as simple as that,” said the manager.
“We’ve got to fight for every point and if we do that hopefully we’ll get what we set out to do.
“The message will be that they have an opportunity. Some people play at this level for 10 years and never get a promotion so two in three years wouldn’t be bad.
“It’s about how much we want it. I think I’ve got the right players and the ones that will give a little bit extra.”
Turner has managed to secure the services of midfielder Taylor Gill from Shrivenham ahead of this weekend’s game.
“I tried to sign him a couple of years ago. I spoke to his dad Les who was his manager at the time (at Sanford) and said we had a real interest in him,” said Turner.
“They were going quite well at the time so he didn’t want to come, but I was successful the second time round.
“I’ve known him since he was a kid and I know what a good player he is.”
Turner is missing Richie Saunders this weekend (head gash) while Shaun Terry and Shaun Carter (both ankle) are doubtful.
Adam Corcoran is available again while James Blake has has received Wilts FA clearance to play following confusion over whether he was suspended or not.
Elsewhere in the division, lowly New College make the journey to Cricklade while Malmesbury will hope to end their long wait for a league game against visiting Lambourn. Purton take on Letcombe at the Red House.
