SWINDON TOWN: Di Canio resigns
7:02pm Monday 18th February 2013 in Sport Exclusive By Sam Morshead
Paolo Di Canio has resigned as manager of Swindon Town
PAOLO Di Canio has resigned as the manager of Swindon Town.
In a statement released to the Advertiser this evening, the Italian announced his decision to leave the County Ground following months of unrest in SN1.
The statement read: "It is with great regret that I find myself having to make this further press statement.
"Last Tuesday, 12th February, I formally confirmed my resignation as Manager of Swindon Town Football Club with immediate effect.
"In my previous press statement on 1st February, I said that I was considering my future, as my position with the club had become untenable, after I found out that Matt Ritchie had been sold without my consent.
"As I had previously stated, there have been a number of broken promises made by the club over the time that I have been Manager of Swindon Town. Despite these problems, I have delivered everything and more that was asked of me, by achieving promotion last year as Champions and competing this season for promotion to the Championship and being just 3 points from top place a year earlier than expected.
"I did not resign immediately, nor publicise my resignation after I had formally confirmed it, as I did not want to jeopardise the negotiations for the sale of the club and I wanted to listen to what the proposed new owners plans were.
"Following discussions, my representatives put forward a proposal that would secure my future at the club until at least the end of the season and quite possibly beyond as well. This proposal actually reduced the Clubs contractual liabilities to me in the interest of saving Swindon Town FC. At a meeting last Friday the proposed new owners accepted and said they were very happy with the new terms.
"I entered into a temporary arrangement with the proposed new owners to continue in my role as Manager but all this was agreed subject to Football League approval for the purchase of the Club being granted by 5:00pm on Monday 18th February.
"At the time of issuing this statement, I have had no further contact from the proposed new owners and I have been told that unfortunately Football League approval has not been granted yet and therefore my temporary arrangement has ended and my resignation stands.
"This is all I wish to say for the time being other than to thank my Technical Staff and the players for their fantastic professional behaviour and attitude in achieving what they have done up to today, also thanks to the Swindon Town supporters for the incredible support they have shown me and the team throughout my time as Manager.
"I wish the best of luck to the supporters, the players and my Technical Staff for the future."

Thank you for some wonderful memories.
The King is dead, long live the King.
I feel like I'm in mourning, can't ever remember in 28 years supporting the Town feeling so sad at someone leaving.
Jed and the others, hope you can get this mess sorted out - can't believe how this has all panned out.
This feels the wrong time for saying this but who do we think would be an adequate replacement (not sure anyone can truly replace Paolo!!) - was thinking Nigel Adkins - if we could get him to come to our basket case of a club.
Yes I call us a basket case, but it's still OUR basket case which we love very dearly. We must all stick together through this. We have had worse times, we WILL have better.

NDA or not, you should have been working like crazy to keep him. Even if the FL have delayed why no continued dialogue with Paolo? Why have things been so protracted?
To many questions, to much silence, and now you have alienated the fans - shame on you new board.

He got the Town promoted but over the last few weeks it has all been about him. He's destabilised the team before matches and he's done it again.
Coming out with the "FL agrees the takeover by 5pm or I'm off" is just childish and stabs the club who took a chance on him in the back.
If he's walked I only hope he's taking the rest of his entourage with him or the Town will be left having to pay off a load of backroom staff they no longer want. If they're still there then the Town should sue Di Canio for breach of contract (all his stuff about that is almost certainly hot air - no club would put guarantees on expenditure in a manager's contract) and make sure he isn't just walking out so he can walk into another job.
I have absolutely no respect for him after this whatsoever.

I've a conspiracy theory that goes something like, You get the FL to get a bloke and his mates from OXFORDSHIRE to pretend to buy a football club pi@@ off the manager so that he leaves after selling the crown jewels to the competition for half that he's worth and then pull out of the deal leaving Swindon to be wound up or something close to it... whilst our neighbours in Oxford laugh out loud...
Historically what has Swindon done to upset the FL so much? why do deals take so long to go through and why is it always Swindon Town Football Club that is used by the FL to try out things when other much larger clubs get away with murder! I hope the Mr McCory is happy as I was lead to believe that it was he that the FL were looking in to!

He threw a paddy before the Crawley game and again before tomorrow's. He could have stayed until after the Tranmere game or - since his statement seems mostly self-justifying guff - gone after the Hartlepool match and given the Town 10 days to get a new manager in.

My big worry was all this time or so without a game and he would walk. Too much time on his hands. Another thing that tells me he wanted out is that he gave a deadline of 5pm tonight for FL approval.
You might think from my rant I did not support him but I'm gutted. He has left a job half finished. Any one who have any ideas of not renewing their season tickets or not going again, had it all before and when the club does well, hey ho they all come out the wood again claiming to have always been a STFC fan. I have not missed a season since first going in '61. I'll be there this season and next as well. STFC is bigger than any person, old cliche I know but so true.
Going back to FL, they always have a downer on us since the Macari betting scandal. Why take so long to ratify, and we are not allowed to do any transfer business. Yet Pompey who are in deep doo doo, can sign players. The new board need to make a statement, and sharpish as soon as ratification is granted. Put Zippy in till end of season. Do not make rash decisions on new manage. Dunno if this rant is over yet. I'm so angry about the whole situation..

Please can plan our finances a little more in the future so we don't get into these messes!
I have a bad feeling that we will now slip in the league, not reach the playoffs, then all out decent players will leave at the end of the season, because they wanted to play for Paolo.

Could he really not wait until the decision from the Football League was taken, even if they are a bunch of knobs who don't like our club and are clearly dragging their feet? I would have thought he would have sided with us in a siege mentality, rather than jump ship on the eve of playing Tranmere.
Of course there's plenty room for conspiracy theories - against the Football League, against the new consortium - and we'll just have to wait and see.
But I feel massively let down by:
A. Black
B. Patey
C. Football League (as usual)
D. Paolo.
Still, at least Black didn't leave behind a car crash. One dreads to think what he believes one would look like.

Disappointed with Di Canio tbh. Promises weren't kept because the situation changed - as always happens especially in lower league football. But wish him all the best.
There are plenty of good managers around. Onwards and upwards.
Last point, those who say they're going to stop following the club make me MAD! This is life for 90% of football club, it's the drama - the highs and lows - that makes football great. In the grand scheme of things, the manager leaving - no matter how good he is - is something that happens to every club bar the big 4. Get over yourself. We're all disappointed. Stick with the club, thick and thin.

I believe that the new owners told PDCs agent that takeover by today. Why the hell didnt the new owners then contact PDC today and tell him a further delay (whatever that might be)??? Lack of truth and transparancy YET AGAIN from ownersd and potential owners of STFC.
Cant blame PDC for handing in notice, cant blame football leauge either, blame our new potential owners for not contacting PDC today.
PATHETIC ...lack of communication and transparency BEFORE they take over officially. Just a phone call to PDc from the new owners today ,and PDC would likely have waited until the FL ratified the takeover.
What the hell are they playing at....and what are we in for now?..Unbelieveable.

I would like him to stay as he has been one of the best managers for results and professionalism we have ever had.On the down side he has been the worst manager we have ever had throwing his toys out the pram, slagging off players in public and the rest of his antics.
I have said on this site before, the two most important elements to our football club are the money men,and the fans.I hope the money side gets sorted so we have a club to support.
We can get another great manager and we will move onwards.I hope we again go for an ex player with something to prove.

This new takeover was hurried, has never tasted good, and has not been ratified. While I'm sure the Football League are doing nothing to help the club, we have to remember that Jed McCrory had a consortium bid for Luton turned down. Until it is approved, I'm very worried, and even if it is approved, "J'ai le moral dans mes chausettes" as the French would say.
It's a shame Paolo couldn't have stuck with us (fans and players) through the next week or so. I thought he was made of sterner stuff. But maybe the old adage about the book of Italian War Heroes was right.

Like others have said it does sound as if there is more behind the scenes regarding the takeover than we know of.
What upsets me most about this is the timing. To agree a deadline 24 hours before a crucial game is daft.
Also, PDC has shown a lack of responsibility here. Yes he has had promises broken (apparently) but he has been paid, he has a strong team which he put together and as Manager should have shown more loyalty.
Still gutted though although many other managers may have achieved the same results with our budgets, he brought passion, humour and integrity back to our club

I hope the club tries to attract Jamie Carragher to quit Liverpool early and take the reins at Swindon now. This formula of a player manager or first job has worked well for us in the past.
The chance of a promotion push in the last 13-14 games has to have considerable appeal to all sorts of managers. And I think Carragher is destined to be a very good manager. That's my shout anyway.
It won't be Richard Briers anyway. RIP to a much-loved English actor and true gent.

Thanks for every Paolo, the writing was on the wall when JW left. Black's got the money, but not the passion and it's cost us. McCrory... he's not exactly beloved in Banbury, so we'll see.
Frankly, if we get Harford and Stein, we'll become the laughing stocks of the football league. Neither man has exactly shown themselves to be managerial masterminds. If it's not Glenn, then surely it needs to be Adkins, Warnock or Curbs.

Paolo, you are up there with Lou Macari, Glenn Hoddle and Danny Williams in terms of great Swindon Town managers. Thank you and may I wish you the best for your future (in football and outside).
Now, did Paolo walk or was he pushed? We will know for sure if a Mr. Newell is our new manager. I have a feeling that Paolo was at the end of his tether and felt he could no longer trust his bosses. Paolo may be a lot of things, but he is totally honest (remember when he was at West Ham and caught the ball in a game v Everton so that Paul Gerrard could get treatment for an injury?) and unwilling to compromise.
It is just a shame that Paolo wasn't our chairman. We could do with a honest and decent person on our Board, rather than the lizards and snakes at present. I trust none of them, and I can't see Jed being an improvement.
We are going to go backwards now, I am sure of it. The players will walk in the summer and we'll have to make do with the scraps discarded by Championship/League 1 sides or look at some good players in Non League like Nuno Carracha (http://www.ukfffc.c

No one can blame Paolo, he has proved to be a fantastic professional, an inspirational manager and has showed respect to us the fans for which he has joined the list of true legends for STFC.
When the dust settles and all the unseen information comes to light, it may truly uncover where the finger of blame actually needs pointing.
But it remains a fact that no player should be sold without the manager being made aware, whether or not it is an essential requirement to generate funds or not, IT SHOULD JUST NOT HAPPEN!
There may be a scenario where the manager just does not agree to a sale, as a player is an assent of a club (business) they are the first way to get ready funds, but keep the manager informed! ( that was madness, and was the moment the wedge was forced between STFC and Paolo).
Lets face it the out going board especially SWP who is leaving entirely are less likely to give a sh#t how they go about it.
I hope that the new owners have the strength and funds to pull us through this, as the Championships is closer now than it has been for a long time, so we need action ASAP. The players on hold wont want to come now.
IT looks as though the football league has dragged it’s feet too, by all means do your job to safe guard our club but do it quickly.
At the end of the day we are near the top and still very much pushing for promotion, and even if Doncaster win tonight (1-1 at half time) we can go into an automatic place with a win at Tranmere.
So on wards and up wards.
(Oh and if you do happen to be reading these Paolo, when I win £100+ million on the Euro lottery, how do you fancy finishing unfinished business……..( I WISH) )

Q - Have STFC actually accepted his resignation. Is this for AB to do or the new bunch???
The only person claiming there is a breach of contract is Di Canio, but he's not a lawyer and he does tend to get carried away with what he says. I cannot believe that any board would write into a manager's contract how much his transfer budget his or how much he's got to spend on salaries. It would be completely irresponsible.
If they (the old board) discussed it with him and said the aim is the FLC but now it turns out that the finances will be tighter until the new board, I cannot see how that's a breach of contract.
I'm also mystified why fans seem to back him 100% over that line. What's the alterative to reining the finances in - continuing to spend irresponsibly and end up in administration? Is that what some fans want (or at least, do they think the risk of continuing how we have been and ending up in admin if it fails is a risk worth taking?)

This proposal actually reduced the Clubs contractual liabilities to me in the interest of saving Swindon Town FC.
So, who has fouled up here then? The FL, no to me, it has to be the new owners. They had a manager who committed and even offered a better option to support the club. NDA or not, you should have been working like crazy to keep him. Even if the FL have delayed why no continued dialogue with Paolo? Why have things been so protracted?
To many questions, to much silence, and now you have alienated the fans - shame on you new board.

I am uncomfortable about the future of our club right now and the only people to gain from this resignation will be the other teams in the mix, I fear.
Paolo IMO only was the best happening for the club, which I have supported for 50 years, in a generation - his passion, work ethic, attention to detail and drive pulled us up from the basement to our current standing in League 1.
He did this - not some armchair warrior, not some politically correct sniffy individual or a Football Manager freak who believes they know how to manage a real professional football team - no, Paolo, and the rules he was given to comply with, which I believe, he did.
I will miss you Paolo.
I will continue to support STFC as it is my club but as I stated in an email sent to the prospective new board several weeks ago (when all this sh1t first started) if it 'became clear PDC was forced out of the club in any way' my season ticket will not be renewed.
A well deserved holiday will be taken instead and I will choose the games, if any, that will then be attended.
This does not make me any less of a supporter than anyone else should this happen but the continued big city hopes just do not match the small town mentality which so often haunts this football club.
I sincerely hope this is not the beginning of the end.

Typical "me me me" from Di Canio.

Gutted but can't blame you Paolo.
We have had worse times, we WILL have better.

..... "Jeremy Wray, former Swindon chairman who appointed Paolo Di Canio as manager in May 2011, told BBC Sport:
"When we first got to know each other it was like boxers sparring. Then you find you trust each other and that is what he relied on and expected from everyone he met.
"He expects a certain standard from others and gives the same standard in return. He is loyal and he expects loyalty in return. It is a two-way street and from everything i have read and heard you can understand he feels let down.
"I think he would definitely have seen this season through, taken stock in the summer and seen what the plans were going forward. He is a very loyal individual and if he still felt he had the backing of the club why would he want to leave?"
Now I don't want to dis PDC but haven't we the fans shown him the utmost loyalty and respect? I can't think how we could have done more these past few weeks to show him our loyalty...... So why can't he hang on long enough to let the new board show their mettle or not? I know I am contradicting my last post but on reflection I just have to ask the above.
Anyway - let's hope it's done deal tomorrow, Jed gets in the door and persuades PDC to change his mind.

Ciao, Paolo. Don't forget to close the door on your way out. Oh - sounds like you didn't.

Swindon Town, football league puppets,
lets see what more damage we can do this little club, we have previously sent the board to prison, we have relegated them to lower leagues, we have the power to do what we can with them, just to show the rest of the world we are the FA,the FL.
WHAT HAS HAPPEND, IS IN THE PAST.As this "little club has got bigger" we are still being pi$sed on as an example to the rest of the football league, we are your ****, do want you want, we will stand as Swindon Town football club. Up-yours.

When ever STFC ( my team ) are doing well and everything seems to be going in one direction ( UPWARDS ), Always someone or the management press self distruct.
WHY ?, They had the best manager in the whole football league including the premiership, which is past it's sell by date anyway. And have a very special and professional squad of players. All the results have been in the teams favour ( well most of the time ), and it looked as though STFC would be playing championship football next season.
Now who knows what is going to happen. One thing I think you can count on is that the team will not be the same next year as other clubs come poching players.
Seems such a shame that some of the decisions taken at this club begger belive. The phrase P*** U* I* A Brewery comes to mind.
Just one manager could ever fill the void left here, Sir Alex and we have no chance of that ever happening.

Passion and commitment was unbelievable - and he if he could learn to channel that energy in the right direction without alienating people he will be one of the top managers. However, as the game is full of over-earning prima donnas that is a tall order.
He's gone but STFC carry on.

Worried about this 'consortium', from what I can tell they are a bunch of pub landlords on an ego trip with no financial clout.

However, thanks Paolo for what you've done for the club. I can't take away his achievements over the 2 seasons, but the financial situation in which we find ourselves is due to some extent to Paolo's poor and costly signings.
E.g. Last Season
Lanzano
Cibbo
Easyjet
Gariboldi
Comazzi
Cox
L.Rooney
Atiku
Clarke - 'cause of the fall out, would have been a good signing otherwise.
Kerrouche - ditto
AND RISSER...
and this year still to be convinced by:
Miller
Navarro
Roberts
and A.Rooney
Lots of these players were wasted wages...
Don't mean to snap at Paolo, but this is my opinion. Good luck with future clubs, unless you play Swindon obvs ;)

Very disappointed at the timing of this from Paolo, even if it was inevitable at some point. He has loyal supporters and loyal players all behind him. If it is just over this delay by the Football League that the new owners can do nothing about, then it's a very disappointing 'It's all about Me' attention-seeking gesture from Paolo in throwing his toys out of the cot. Clearly the fans don't mean as much to him as he would like to make out.

However, promoting an assistant to manager often doesn't work out (Hoddle to Gorman, anyone?) so I'm not sure whether he's automatically in line.
TBH my post doesn't come across as I meant it. I think it shows the potential problem of having a manager - particularly at this level - bring in his own backroom staff. If you sack him you have to sack the lot and if he walks out you could be left with a backroom team a new manager doesn't want (or who wouldn't want to work with him). The Town seem to be in a bit of a mess financially yet Di Canio could potentially have left them having to pay up contracts because people are surplus to requirements through no fault of their own.
Oh and this is a board for posting comments on. You're not the moderator so please don't tell others what they can and can't post. Despite some of the insults aimed at the minority who aren't automatically taking Di Canio's side, I'm not trying to stir anything up. But hurling insults or posting "I'm not debating this" type comments just gives the impression people aren't prepared to listen to a view that's not the same as theirs.

I also did not say that there was a breach I said it was a potential breach and dispute.
Having been on both sides of dozens of takeovers over the last 20 years, I do have a problem with the way this one has been handled. From the start the communication has been poor. Communicating with key employees is a necessity, even if you cannot talk through all the details you can keep them in the loop, and they simply have not done that.
Secondly the chronology has been totally shot. You should know the basics such as what your key dates are, how long things may take and the order you need to do things.
For example, they could have easily sold Ritchie, if it had to be done, then sign the 3 players. Once they were ratified you could then put in the paperwork for the takeover, still before the midnight of the 31st.
You constantly moan about people blindly following PDC yet you are so blind the other way you completely defeat your own argument.

Endless rumours & no solid information. People are taking sides here with no idea what the story really is. If Di Canio is about to become Leeds / Coventry manager then this could just be a convenient opt out. I cannot understand why he would carry on through a 'hostile' environment for so long to walk at the supposed brink of new ownership. I've no idea about the new consortium & have been dismissing the negativity, but losing our 2 biggest assets during the takeover is not the greatest start. Would Black really write off the debt, keep 15% off the club just to hand the club on to some chancers? You've got to hope not.

Thank you PDC for all you did.
Annoyed that PDC decided to quit now right before next game.
Why not wait another 24 hrs or until after next game?
Think he knows more than he's letting on and decided to walk because of goings on.
He may have made arrangements with another club to take over and they needed to know by 5pm tonight and he had to resign to be considered.
Hope he reconsiders but I fear he knew we were headed for administration and would be deducted pts and his hard work went out the window?
How will the players react and who will they get in?
Hope they can get someone like Adkins knows division etc and it would be worth it to take town on.
What I'd like to know is why FL dragged it's feet did they want PDC out?
And was there a lack of communication between new owners and PDC?
Here's the deal PDC it's taking longer its the FL not us etc
Too bad something always happens with STFC when things are going good to screw it up.

When ever STFC ( my team ) are flying high and doing well with everything seemingly going in one direction, that being UPWARDS, There is always someone or some movement within the running of the club that getts itchy fingers and just has to press the self distruct button.
WHY ?, They had everything, the best manager in the whole football league including the premiership, which by the way is well past it's sell by date. They have a very special, dedicated and professional squad of players. All the results have been going their way ( well most of the time ), and it looked as though STFC would be playing championship football next season.
What more could anyone want ?
Now who knows what is going to happen. One thing I think you can count on is that the team will not be the same next season as other clubs come poching players.
Seems such a shame that some of the decisions taken at this club begger belive.
Just one manager could ever fill the void left here by Paolo, Sir Alex and we have no chance of that ever happening.
Good luck Paolo where ever you go. I do hope you get the respect you deserve in your next position.
England maybe ?
Or maybe not as your not a yes man and may ruffle a few feathers and upset a few people and players, but then you would win the world cup of that there is no dought.

Time for the players to stand up and be counted whoever is in charge. Win tomorrow and another favourite chant will be echoing round the ground on Saturday.

As for their communication with Di Canio, we only have his word on this. It's quite likely it hasn't been great because of the Town's track record but it doesn't automatically follow that he's 100% right.
As for how much he should be kept in the loop, perhaps his track record of going public a lot has meant people were less inclined to tell him info that was confidential but which they thought they could get away telling him because they could be 100% certain he'd keep quiet?
I think there's been a distinct lack of football savvy at the club recently. I do think the attempt to force through the takeover by Jan 31 was probably a bit misguided and/or naive. But then again, maybe Black is under cashflow or other pressures that we don't know about and which necessitated this deadline.
So Ritchie was probably sold purely because of the transfer window. Black knew that if the takeover didn't go through then he'd be left having to fund the club for the next 4 months - in the old days they could just have sold Ritchie or AN Other this month or next.
I'm not totally anti-Di Canio. I think he's done good things for the Town but I think some of his behaviour has been poor, especially recently. I think he plays the media quite well, especially compared to the club itself. I'm not blind to his achievements but I do think the praise for him and Wray is a bit OTT and I think Black comes in for some unnecessary criticism on here (although I think he could maybe have handled the sale better).

I'm also feeling very angry, but don't know who to direct my anger at - the FL for dragging their heels?, Black for ditching our club at the worst possible time? or the new owners for apparently doing nothing to hold on to Paolo?
I just can't understand how this total capitulation can have happened. As a supporter with little knowledge of what has been going on internally I can only despair at the implosion of my beloved Town. Just weeks ago we were set to achieve a second automatic promotion in successive seasons, now we will do well to get 7th place.
Right now, losing Paolo feels almost as bad as losing a family member. I just hope that the players can lift themselves for tomorrow - I don't think I could.

Ive got a hunch this could be a publicity stunt and by tomorrow night PDC is back in charge hopefully, but if not then Id bring back Glenn Hoddle with hazard/bodin or fabrizio to the end of the season. I doubt nigel adkins or warnock would come here tbh.
I share fans frustration to do with the football league ratification, they have always seemed to have had a problem with our club but at the same time takeovers can take longer than you think.
just hope this takeover is kosher, if its not thats us done for.

Dicanio had a budget for league 2 and 1 that any half decent manager could achieve success with. When he goes to a club that might actually have some expectations, when they start losing and fans give him grief, watch Dicanio implode in style. He was here 5 minutes and is certainly no legend in my book.

I am shocked by Paolo's press statement. Surely if he is sick of the way he has been treated you would have thought he would still have waited until after the match tomorrow night. I can see it now, we win we go top and then paolo says." look at wht I ahve done for this club. We are now top of L1 and the best team in the division. I have done my job, I now go. The board have not supported me and have told me lies. I am sorry to the fans but that is not my fault".
Now he would get the respect of every club and could walk into any job he wants. Simple.

As far as we're aware, they could actually have kept the club alive and we could already be 'dead, without them.
You have a go at the "new Mr Chairman" not knowing how to run a club but the new Chairman is not in place and cannot run the club until he is! How would you react if you we're slagged off for doing a bad job before you'd even been employed?

this feels like bad timing. we've got a very important game tomorrow night which we could go top of the league should we win it which would be a major psychological boost for our side at this stage having not been top at all this season.

You really do come across as a sad catty witch....keep your opinons to yourself as like many of the new names on this site you seem to exist only to stir things up and not to discuss.
Paolo was lied to and will not come back. Already rumours from West Ham fans that Paolo is heading to Upton Park for next season and that Big Sam will be paid off and re-take over control of Blackburn Rovers.
Forget any new developments, we will be retrenching (i.e. offloading the big earners in May) and next season could well be damage limitation.
Still, we'll have nice local trips to Bristol Rovers and Aldershot to look forward too...
Why is it that for every high this club has, there follows a mega low?
