SWINDON TOWN: "No approach from Swindon," says Hockaday

Dave Hockaday Dave Hockaday

FOREST Green manager Dave Hockaday has said no approach has been made by Swindon Town for his services.

Hockaday, who played more than 300 times for the Robins in the 1980s, has been installed as one of the favourites for the top job at the County Ground by bookmakers following the resignation of Paolo Di Canio.

However, it is understood that Town will not approach managers until Football League approval of the sale of the club is received, and Hockaday told BBC Radio Gloucestershire that he had not had contact from Swindon.

"I haven't been approached. I'm employed by Forest Green Rovers and I love my job," he said.

"I've got the best chairman in the world so I'm not going to go looking for another job.

"I've got a great group of lads here and we're building something special.

"I'm Forest Green through and through. If ever my chairman wants me to leave then that's a different matter but until such time I'm happy here."

Why are you naming players who are still playing as potential managers? Heard someone earlier putting Darren Ward's name in contention as player manager - you can't just decide you want to be a manager and turn up at the club the next day!

Adkins, good shout, and many would agree myself included. Carragher and Scholes? You've lost me there.

This is a total mess behind the scenes, and the players deserve massive credit for their performance last night.

I was there and there was no tactics being forwarded from the bench (all were sat down). The way the players acknowledged the fans tells me there is togetherness between us and them

Now, the way forward in the interim:

Manager: Paul Bodin
Assistant Manager: Alan McGloughlin
Goalkeeper Coach: Fraser Digby
Physio: Either recall Kate Cady or Jamie Pitman (he was physio at Hereford.

I state this is in the interim arrangement as I don't think the club will be able to appoint anybody until the takeover has the FL approval (same as getting new players)

1984 the reason players have been named is simply to steady the ship , keep the discipline and run the training , hence the reason Ward has been mentioned , he is a true professional on and off the field and a very good role model for diet etc . A nice steady hand on the wheel while we change drivers , I believe thatis the reason , nobody expects him to suddenly become manager .

It's not about lack of respect. 300 games for the club and a marvelous servant AS A PLAYER, for sure. As a manager, he's not proved much cop at Forest Green. In fact, consensus seems to be that if they didn't have such a big budget by comparison to the other conference sides, they'd be battling relegation.

Realistically, there are only five candidates on the bookies' list that are acceptable: Adkins, Hoddle, Bodin, Curbishley and Warnock.

Interesting to note, though, that PDC is 9/1 to return to the club at Paddy's, and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is at evens...

IMHO we need consistency, however i don't think Paul Bodin or any combination of former players should be relied upon as 14 games is a large chunk of the season. All can be won and lost in that period.

We need someone who wants the team to play at the high tempo Paolo demanded, and the beautiful football that has been so successful.

Therefore no kick and rush merchants whoever they are. Trying to change the way we play this late in the season will most probably result in confused players and poor results.

I wish I had the answer but my feeling is we shouldn't appointment a permanent post until the end of the season, we should look for experience in the higher leagues but who maybe aren't flavour of the month now.

I would definitely approach Owen Coyle and Steve Coppell, im not sure who else. Ideally come the summer we would have our pick of a better pool of manager if we are promoted. I think UIwe Rosler has done a good job at Brentford this year, but I doubt we would get him unless we got promoted and they didn't.

I realise Scholes and Carragher are still playing, but their careers are coming to an end in the premier league, and could be great assets with their football knowledge, and know how, to teams like ours, who are in lower leagues, and would be hungry for success. I would rather have young guys as player managers or just managers, than the tripe and "has beens" who keep being mentioned. After DI Cannio, we need someone who can do the job, and have an aura, and flair, and not the folded arms brigade that are always throwing their hat into the ring. Anyway I just named them as examples, they will probably get coaching roles at thier present clubs. I still like the Idea of Adkins as for the rest no thank you, anyway God and his entourage might be back for the week end!!!!!, but really I stand more chance of being the next pope!!!.

Too many rubbish names being mentioned. At the stage of the season and we are sat top of the league, we need an experienced manager - one experienced in promotion from this division and experienced in what it takes in the Championship . . . Adkins would be ideal. He is a top manager and loyal to his club . . . Southampton kicked him in the balls after doing a great job for the Saints. Really thought Paolo was here for the term, didn't expect him to throw his toys out of the pram. He had done a brilliant job for Swindon and I thank him and his team for that

Adkins stock is quite high at the moment. He is Championship level, and above our station. Southampton has both a solid club structure and financial backing; we are presently a shambles off the field.

What is interesting though is that there have been a number of managerial vacancies in the Championship recently, and Adkins hasn't been anywhere near any of them.

So I hope at least someone asks him if he's interested. Presumably he lives in the SW area? And if he's waiting until summer to review his options, then a short-term contract, with the chance to enhance his CV even further by guiding us to the Championship, might have appeal.

So ask him.

Many people agree with you but I don't see why Adkins should think we're not big enough for him. He was at our level a couple of years ago and at a smaller club than us before that. I'd support him if he was appointed but I'm not sure why he's such a popular choice.
Well that's the clue Den, he was at our level a couple of years ago.

Unless he's absolutely desperate to grab at the first thing he's offered, he'll surely be looking for the decent Championship club his experience warrants.

For similar reasons, I cannot see why on earth Hoddle would come back (and quite a few wouldn't want him anyway, including me, purely because he hasn't got recent relevant experience).

APPEARS A DECENT MAN ON THE FACE OF IT, STANDING UP TO BUNGS ETC WHILST AT LUTON?

HOWEVER HE TOOK OVER HARTLEPOOL WHO WERE TOP OF DIVISION THREE (LEAGUE ONE) AND CLEAR BY SIXTEEN POINTS.. THEY WENT ON A TERRIBLE RUN, WERE CAUGHT AND OVERTAKEN, ALTHOUGH THEY DID MANAGE TO FINISH RUNNERS UP.

WE DO NOT HAVE SIXTEEN POINTS TO THROW AWAY IN AN EXPERIMENT FINDING OUT IF A MANAGER MAY BE ABLE TO CUT IT !!!!!

IT HAS TO BE ADKINS...HE IS CAPABLE OF STEADYING THE SHIP, KEEP US PLAYING FOOTBALL, UNITE THE WHOLE CLUB AND PROBABLY IMPROVE US AGAIN..
I read that on wiki last night , not a great record. Dont think it will be him though , he`s not even in the betting . My money is on phil parkingson , just waiting to make there move after the weekends cup final, hence miller and ward in charge saturday.

Its not a case of who we appoint, its if we are allowed to appoint a new manager until the take over is ratified.

Until then, we have to go with the home grown talents of Bodin, Pitman and Ally Mac for example - all of which are employed by the club at some sort of nature.

When the take over is ratified, then lets start specualting again

Eric Cantona is en route to Dover by fishermans trawler from Calais, respectfully throwing sardines overboard. His destination is Swindon and John Moncur will be his able assistant. He has stated that he will kick the team into the championship, albeit, through the spectators entrance at Selhurst Park. Dream on, but why not? A nutcase replacing a nutcase, the perfect replacement. Mon amour boujolais siv ou plais perrier?

So Hockaday has ruled himself out of a job he has no chance in getting???

In that case I would also like to say that Swindon Town have made no contact with me and why would I want to go there??? I've got the best boss in the world (my missus) and I've got to say that really in case she reads this. If my boss wants me to leave then I want the engagement ring I bought her and I'm keeping the car as I got that before I met her.................

And Ward/Miller now in temporary charge, well shut my mouth! Only happy to admit when I'm wrong.

Why isn't the trust doing something to help settle this mess.

Wiz do you really think the trust carries any real clout with the club? I don't I'm afraid and have to say thought John Ward's pre nip remarks were a load if old twaddle IMO buddy.
