GARY Roberts believes his first goal for Swindon Town against Tranmere last night was better than his second, despite the latter coming from fully 60 yards.

After a lean spell since joining the Robins, Roberts came alive on Tuesday with a spectacular brace - one a howitzer on the half-volley from 20 yard to put Town two up and the other a speculative thump into an unguarded net from well inside his own half.

Both were extraordinary in their own right, but because of the technique required to execute his first the winger picked that as his favourite of the pair.

“Personally I’d say the first one was technically better. The first one was tired legs and you’re trying to get rid of the ball but the first one had more technique and the keeper had more of the chance of saving that one.

“I’ve seen him off his line and I knew he’d been up once or twice before and it sat up lovely. On that pitch you can’t really run with the ball and I just tried my luck in the last minute of the game.

“If it doesn’t go in it gives you a bit of time but fortunately it trickled in.”

By his own admission, Roberts has found the going heavy during his time in Wiltshire. In and out of the team and battling injury problems, the former Huddersfield man has also struggled to win over sceptical supporters.

However, he is now starting to find his feet and the previously elusive goalscoring touch.

“I couldn’t imagine scoring a goal after the last couple of weeks where keepers have been pulling them. Against Colchester he’s pulled it out of the top corner, the Hartlepool keeper’s saved one which I didn’t think he should save and I got one disallowed early in the second half (against Tranmere) and I was just thinking my goals have dried up,” he said.

“I’m usually socring eight to 10 goals maybe so I thought they’d dried up but one bounce on the edge of the area and I catch it and it goes in and from there your luck’s in.

“The second one went in and hopefully a few more come now.”
