SWINDON TOWN: Black reveals all on Twitter
1:46am Friday 22nd February 2013 in Sport
Andrew Black
THE former majority shareholder of Swindon Town, Andrew Black, took to Twitter late on Thursday night to issue a lengthy statement detailing the twists and turns of his tenure at the County Ground.
The Betfair founder left no stone unturned as he put across his side of event s – from the removal of Jeremy Wray as chairman through the sale of Matt Ritchie to the resignation of Paolo Di Canio.
The entire statement can be read below. For the sake of fairness, it is reproduced as it appeared on the social networking site.
“OK - well thank you all for your kind words - well some of you anyway. When I decided to stand alone and support the club it was a disaster scenario - relegated to League 2, facing sure administration and with a heavy FL points deduction there would have been a major chance of falling out of the leagues at the end of the season.
“The club also had no manager. I was never there for the long term - I just wanted to restore some respectability. Today we sit at the top of league 1, again with no manager. As far as I'm concerned it's job done.
“I never signed up to the '3 year plan' - it was only presented to me once, and then only briefly. As it happens in 2011 I agreed to sell the club at the end of that season. Paolo knew about this. Unfortunately the deal fell through.
“The deal fell through because the FL concluded that they couldn't afford to run the club. One of their main backers died suddenly in the final weeks. It was all a bit tragic.
“I put Jeremy in as chairman at the start if the 2011 season - for various reasons I wasn't comfortable but I didn't have anyone else.
“Jeremy and Nick interviewed Paolo and thought he was the right guy - I stayed in the background as I prefer. We gave him a 2 year contract.
“I've known Jeremy for half my life - he was a huge West Ham fan, and in particular almost obsessive about Di Canio. This concerned me.
“There was a lot of debt in the holding company, much owed to Sir Martyn Arbib, but he was always happy to write it off, as I was with mine. The remainder was owed to Amdrew Fitton who was Jeremy's business partner. He wasn't prepared to write it off. It was very messy. Andrew and Jeremy did not want me to sell and we ended up falling out. I won't go into the detail here.
“I decided I 2011 that I would have to replace Jeremy, but it took a long time to find someone. Chairing a football club is not easy. Sir William did an amazing job for which he will never get full credit. I am hugely in his debt.
“I never got to know Paolo very well - I only met him a handful of times.
“Sitting in a board meeting with him is pretty surreal. I said many times to Nick that we should get the cameras in for a fly on the wall documentary.
“Anyway as the (first) sale of the club was going through FL approval Di Canio and Spencer presented us with a new contract with only a .few days to accept. I said it wasn't my concern as I thought I had sold the club. The contract went through and then I ended up owning .the club again. It seemed to be a very one sided contract. I had no choice but to accept it. A couple of months later I replaced Jeremy and relations started breaking down very quickly.
“I hadn't been happy with what had happened over Caddis and I had had a sense of humour failure when the club breached the wage cap and went into embargo. I had repeatedly asked at the board for all player transactions to be communicated and I had had virtual radio silence.
“Di Canio and Spencer were not happy with the chairman being changed and began issuing press releases criticising the board. I didn't like the way it was going. The budget plan changed with the forecasts for this year and next going a lot higher. At the start of the season I had decided to put in another year, but I changed my mind.
“I felt very confident that we could find a buyer in January. There was plenty of interest - the problem was that a lot of the interest was to buy the club out of administration. None of the board wanted that of course. To be honest I didn't really know much about the administration process at first.
“Anyway as it happened there was interest to buy the club without the need for admin. Given that I sold the club free of all callable debt.
“For £1 you'd hope that that would get some interest going.
“So I had told the club I would not put any more money in and they had to find new backers. As it happened when this was announced some of the clubs we owed money to (loan players etc) got nervy and demanded immediate payment, so I had to put more in to get to the end of Jan.
“There was a plan in place for the board to revert to if the sale fell apart - we were speaking with a firm of accountants. The only real option for raising cash quickly was to sell Matt Ritchie. Di Canio and Spencer knew this and there had, I'm told, been a lot of discussions.
“They didn't want to sell him of course - I don't think any of us did, but there were cash issues and I had decided for better or worse to hold firm and not put more money in. There were lots of frantic calls late into the evening and Ritchie ended up sold. Di Canio and Spencer had argued against it but AFAIK they had been consulted and had accepted that it might happen.
“I didn't have a lot to do with it - I had a few calls when I was at a restaurant that evening. I signed it off though.
“The deal got done subject to FL approval, which was great - Russell Backhouse put a lot of work in to make it happen. I met with the other side and got on well with them - a mixture of guys who hopefully have most bases covered. We still had to wait for FL approval and it was quite slow in coming, which displeased team Di Canio as we couldn't sign any loan players until the deal was approved.
“Paolo presented the incoming owners with a deal (that they accepted) on a very short time frame that was out of our control. When the FL approval did not come through in time Paolo resigned as he said he would and walked away. I was surprised.
“But if I'm honest I was pleased. Paolo is a highly intense individual and a fierce and demanding boss, but he is uncompromising and does not manage upwards. I haven't decided how good I think he is at his job - he'd be on your case the whole time but he had a very decent budget to work with.
“The worst thing from the perspective of new owners is that he isn't the type to be told - I think he saw himself as bigger than the club and I think it would have been an accident waiting to happen.
“At least this way the new owners get to pick a manager that they can work with. I know a lot of fans will be unhappy but the important thing from my perspective is that things are in good order.
"Anyway that's all from me. I hope it works out with the new team and I hope the club makes it to the Championship. Thanks all."

Perhaps his biggest error was installing JW as chairman given his concerns over how seemed obsessed with with Paolo.
Maybe JW was a little awestruck when around Paolo, and if this was the case I'm sure Paolo would have picked up on it.
We all know that JW found it hard to say NO when a new signing was needed.
But I don't think Paolo should be held at fault for spending what he perceived as the budget.
Once JW was removed it is quite clear that the writing was on the wall and it was only a matter of time.
From the fans (majority?) point of view SWP was a pretty loathesome character, but I am not sure if any chairman would have been as lenient with Paolo as JW clearly was.
Guess we will never find out.

I would love to know what Andrew Black's motive was in the first place when he invested millions.
Was he hoping to make money out of the ground development?
Regardless of the soap opera being played out by all, this is ALL of our football Club.
No-one is bigger than the Club & we must remember that.
Lets get back to football which is what true supporters are all here for.
Good luck to all the ex Town parties as they go their separate ways. I am sure they all meant well.
Here's to the next chapter in STFC's history.

Lokks like the whole thing has been highly skilllfully and diligently handled.
Obviously had the long term future of our great club at heart.
SWP seems to have been the hadman needed to reign in PDC.
We could have done a Luton here and may not have survived. Thanks AB.

I respect his openness. As in any situation, there are two sides to every story. It's not as if our ex-manager has been shy about getting his side across, is it?
The Di Canio era was a magical, exhilarating time to be a Town fan that will never be forgotten. It's thanks to Andrew Black's spending that we were able to experience it, so for that we should thank him.

Thank you Mr Black for everything, I can see how difficult a situation this must have been. Your timing wasn't great but understandable.
As for PDC, thanks for such an exhilerating journey but 'legendary' status...I don't think so.
You demanded undying loyalty from your players, you demanded that they face up head on to adversity....the very qualities that you seemingly didn't possess when the going got tough
I love Swindon Town Football Club and no one individual will ever be bigger than the club

I won't, there's clearly more to it, but I don't think dragging it out any longer and washing our dirty linen in public is at all good for the club, so I hope there isn't any comeback from Di Canio or Spencer and this draws a line under it and everyone can move on.
Thanks for all you have done for the club, AB, but your exit strategy was awful and really messed things up. Town supporters are well within their rights to remember that in addition to remembering all he good you did.

Saying that, I'd never criticise Paolo. Champions Div 2 first year and now top of Div 1. I think every one of us would have settled for that the day he was named manager.
As someone said yesterday, what other manager would agree to take a pay cut, would agree to pay for loan players, would be shovelling snow off the pitch approaching midnight, buy the fans pizza's. On the separate occasions he lost his parents he stuck around to take charge of matches when everyone would have forgiven him if he had wanted to be with his grieving family.
Mr Black, Mr Di Canio, sincere thanks for everything.

Secondly, Paulo resigning before speaking to the new owners not make much sense either. With only a couple of months of the season left what could he achieve anywhere else (if West Ham wanted him they could have waited til the end of the season so no panic there either). If we didn’t get promotion them he could cite the disruption from the sale of the club and not being able to sign players, and if he DID get us promoted then he could claim back to back promotion against the background of the adversity. The second promotion being a greater achievement as it was done in despite the problems at the club and against stronger opposition. It is a no lose situation for him. Also, by quitting he will also make it more difficult to tell his future players to tough it out when the going gets tough instead of walking away. To my mind it is clearly in our interests and his interests to manage us until the end of the season. I hope the new owners are straight on the phone to offer him the job on whatever terms he wants until the end of the season. With have a great chance to go up this season which might not come around again for a very long time. I think we need an experienced manager to get us over the winning line and then go from there (if Paulo can’t be persuaded to think again).
A number of posters have commented on how Di Canio achieved what he did with a big budget. I think it should be acknowledged that he generated a significant amount of funds himself from cup runs. Doesn’t anyone know roughly how much money we earned above budget for his cup runs this season and last? It must be in the millions and hence a very significant proportion of the overall original budget. Even if he had a much higher budget last season that League Two rivals he still must take credit for beating many teams from higher leagues with much bigger budgets than us.
Lastly, Andrew Black said Paulo couldn’t manage up. I think in football a successful manager is the rarest commodity and therefore it is up to the owners and the board to ensure that they keep such a manager happy and try to ensure that the quirks of that manager don’t become too big a problem.

Now he's walked black will not have his 15% the new board can pick newell
Or buckle to drive us back down the league.

PDC's time has gone, and the club now needs a better manager than him
Forgetting any outbursts off the pitch, a manager has to be viewed on results
First season, won the league
Second season, top of the league when he left with possibly the best squad we have had since Hoddle was in charge
Who could do better than that ?

As for Paolo lots of jobs been out there the last couple of months not one aproach ( official one )
Personal any chairman would be scared stiff to take him on
IMO His biggest fault is Phil Spencer
No scouting network just him doing all the deals on players 500k last year
And for some of the good players he found there were alot of **** ones
So lets all look forward to next year in one of the Best Divisions in the world with a New Start
And a new roll in the new renamed Digbys deli Bar ( after Paolo ripped his name off last night )

Forgetting any outbursts off the pitch, a manager has to be viewed on results
First season, won the league
Second season, top of the league when he left with possibly the best squad we have had since Hoddle was in charge
Who could do better than that ?

I do find it hard to accept that he ‘never signed up to the '3 year plan' when it has been mentioned so much in the media, and by members of the clubs staff.
It appears clear that he had problems with Paolo as a character, being to strong, but that happens in all walks of life at all levels and is often the reason individuals have an edge to succeed.
I do thank him for his help with our club ( and will always be ours the fans ) although I may not sound like im grateful I most certainly am.
On Paolo I would have him back tomorrow, high maintenance or not he was good for Swindon and worked wonders with the team, also showed respect to the fans, I am though very disappointed at the timing of his leaving, whether in his statement when he mentioned having not heard from the new board to extend his temporary agreement he wanted them to, then he knows how to use a phone and ask as do all of us.
But a great man and manager and will remain a legend of Swindon in my book.
( although I did not agree with the Cadiss affair either, and would have him back too. may be next year?)
But onwards and upwards.
Welcome to Jed and his team, please be honest with us, and take care of this wonderful club.
Who ever manages us now good luck, if you work as hard as Paolo did you will gain our respect and hopefully gain more success in the future for STFC

They have been prepared to write off millions for the sake of STFC, amazing when you think about it.
I have never really got my head around the word surreal, but I think this whole episode is pretty close to the mark.
I don't think Paolo will do himself any favours responding to either article.

However, things are moving so quickly you never know what is round the corner.
Just hope we don't get the mindless PDC chants, that could upset the feelgood factor the interim team are trtying to feed off.

So Paolo you were great for the football team and fans as you put pride back into our football and I've loved every minute of it, but not so great for the club.
Mr Black you were great for the club and your ££££s saved us when we needed it so a big thankyou for that.
Now the takeover has been completed and we are top of the league and on course to win it.
So again thankyou to Paolo and Mr Black for what has been one of the best periods of supporting theTown.
Lets hope the right decision is made on the new manager, no old journeymen please, lets have another keen and hungry young explayer along the lines of Macari, Hoddle, Ardiles, Paolo you know it make sense. Jimmy Flloyd would do for me with an experienced man alongside him.
Glad to get back to watching football, now can't wait for Saturday and Tuesday with 6 points a must.

However, his statement shouts of 'it isn't my fault' - to the extent that he claims he's hardly been here and hasn't had any involvement. To me this means he has to shoulder as much blame as everyone else. No one comes out of this looking great I'm afraid.
Its just a shame that the bunch of friends/business associates who saved this club, then fell out with each other, which ultimately almost cost this club once again.
Anyway, its done now. We can say our thanks and move on.
It would be a brave, possibly foolish decision to take Di Canio back, but I'm convinced the majority of fans would welcome him with open arms - he has been the face and personality of a resurgent Swindon Town FC.

It seems to have handed far too much influence to an agent which just served to widen the gap between owner and manager. The finances might be complicated but the failure isn't - no real communication.
I don't think many of us should be too surprised at Andrew Black's version. Apart from the attempted sale in 2011 it all sounds true to form.
Clearly AB and PDC did wonders for this club. Just a pity they were miles apart from day one, and the people in the middle were the decision makers day to day, with financial pressures on one side, and Paolo's demands on the other.
Thank you once again to Andrew Black and the others who put their own money into this club for whatever motive.

Seriously I think this is going to roll on in the media for a while. We've now heard Andrew Blacks version of events, Paolo will come back in response to words spoken by patey, Fitton and Wray are presently staying schtum, Jethro hasn't really said anything yet and we still have the prospect of a new manager to come in who has to pick up the pieces and somehow get us over the line.
I only got 7-1 at the start of the season for us to get promoted, Can anyone say what the odds are now we are top of the league. IMHO it's going to be a miracle to overcome all this disruption and adversity and still win the league, a very tough ask with such a small squad.
Of course as with all fans I hope that we can still do it, next two games without a manager will be crucial and with only the players we have to see it through I really wish them the best of luck and give it their best shot.
As a last comment I think it could be a long time before Paolo gets another opportunity, shame really, did a good job, but not too many clubs out there that would be prepared to take the chance we did. As so many have said before me, it would all end in tears and i guess it has.

3. Hopefully the new board will be more cautious.
4. Hopefully the new board will choose the right manager.
5. Even though the present players are well up for it, we will need another two or three players to get promotion. They will get tired under top position pressure.
6. Will Luke Rooney feature in the next three lineups?.
7. PDC and the italian mob will no doubt move on to better things, but he will be still the same guy engrossed in controversy and dugout kicking etc.
8. Oxford still have only three sides to their ground.

He wasn't even a football fan, yet he ploughed in millions of his own money, wrote off all the debts at the beginning and at the end, gave the club away for free, and left it sitting at the top of League One.
That's a legacy alright.
A few things remain unclear though. Why did he get involved in the first place? Why was he so hands off when so much of his money was at stake? Why did he feel he had 'no option' but to accept the terms of Di Canio's/Spencer's contracts? And why so vague about the three-year plan when Paolo always cited it as gospel?
Go on Adver- go after these answers. It could only do Andrew Black's standing further good.
And while you're at it, ask the new owners what their financial plans are. If they have got the club for the price of most things in Poundland, have they the funds to maintain our budgeted annual losses to get into the Championship, this year or next? Or should we expect divestment of playing assets to balance the books. What are THEY bringing to the party?

At the risk of being hanged as a heretic, part of the problem seems to be down to weak management by Jeremy Wray. Which is why AB replaced him, it seems. And when someone becomes indispensable in an organisation strong management gets rid. On that basis the new consortium seems to have started off on a good footing. Loved the pdc era, but back to reality folks. As for swp's parting shot - a tad unnecessary, but pdc took the bait and has probably ruled himself out of any worthwhile job now.

Firstly thanks to Andrew Black for your honesty, money and perseverance. You undoubtedly saved our club at a crucial stage and put us on a good platform to go upwards.
Secondly thanks to PDC for where we are and what you have done. Amazing manager but it would appear that you are far too big for our club and we simply can not provide you with the millions you need. Thirdly thanks to Jed and the new board. Welcome to STFC and let's get it done.

Firstly, many thanks to Andrew Black for saving the club. Still one thing I am not clear about from his statement is why the urgency to sell the club. Surely he could have waited til the end of the season. Given the position of the club in the league (i.e. a reasonable chance of promotion - which would have greatly increased the value of the club - or at least earning a fair amount of money from the play-offs) it would have been in all parties interest to have waited.
Nick Owen was on TV at the weekend and said that Luton's FAC run would earn them about £500k. They had a live TV match as well although there ground holds less than the CG and probably has some standing (although I think it's got corporate boxes down one side).
AIUI you earn 40% of the gate money, home or away, and the other 20% goes into a pool which is shared out. Obviously there is prize money and TV money for live matches.
So if we got say 12000 vs Wigan or Villa @ £20 = £240k revenue. 40% of that is £96k. Our share from the earlier rounds would have been a lot less because either the attendance was lower or prices would have been reduced. The above also ignores kids paying £1 or whatever.
We'd only really have cashed in as you think we did if we'd drawn ManYoo or Arsenal and they'd sold out without having to drop the price to a tenner.
Ultimately while the cup runs were exciting for the fans probably didn't bring in much more than a couple of hundred grand in total.

We all loved PDC & as an fellow Italian, really sad to see him go!
But a BIG thank you to Andrew Black as he has had to cope with the "ego" of PDC (as i do know what temperaments these Italians have) lol.
Thanks Paolo you did a great job, but you must give even more thanks to Andrew as this guy has backed you with the CASH?
PDC i feel has let us all down a bit, we can draw a line under all this now, MOVE ON & get our moving in the right direction under new management?

It's OK for Black to say Paolo can't manage upwards but he can only spend what he is given. Very grateful to Black of course but he hasn't managed downwards at all well from what he has said.
Communication is the key. Managing from distance doesn't usually work and it hasn't here.
The Caddis situation was handled appallingly, and the embargo situation was a farce. Bearing in mind Black's lack of faith in both manager and chairman from Day 1, these two episodes and the subsequent public criticism of the board show it's no surprise he's not giving them a glowing reference, but I'm very surprised Black remained hands off throughout.
If Mrs Black went to Harrod's every week and racked up debt on the old credit card, would he step in or just let it continue?
At the end of the day though he has financially made a great contribution to the club and despite throwing in the towel knowing the risk of a third administration, things seemed to have worked out OK now the dust is settling a bit.

As a couple of people have said- this is just AB's side of the story. People can decide to simply accept it as gospel if they want.

I've got shares in GlaxoSmithKline, and so own a (tiny) part of that company - but I don't expect to manage it.
What Black is guilty of though is not managing his own money more carefully. He trusted Wray to do this, but this was misplaced, and sounds like he knew it from the off but didn't step in quickly enough.
I don't think a Chairman needs to be full time, certainly not at a small football club. Many chairmen of big PLCs are part time and non-executive. But what a football Chairman must do is provide a seamless link between owners and manager, and communicate clearly to fans and media. Wray did the second one well and the first one badly. Patey did the opposite. We just need a chairman that does both.

Thank you Mr Patey for your efforts in finding buyers for the club and saving it from god knows what. It is becoming clear how tricky your job was. Identifying what to say or not is the key to diplomacy and you have handled it well. I can now appreciate how difficult it must have been trying to appease both fans and Paolo.
Thank you Paolo for 18 fantastic months. You have instilled pride back into the fans of the club and you have left us with an incredible football team. I wish you well in the future.
I now fear that we will enter a war of words between the two sides but I hope that it can be avoided. It would, IMO, appear that Mr Wray has a lot to answer for.
JW has not said "NO" and in a way extended the credit limit on Paolo's credit card without permission. Paolo has made more and more demands and if JW had been firmer the January deadline would never have been implemented.

In any event, it seems we the fans owe a great deal to Black AND Paolo di Canio for a marvellous two years, whatever mud is flying about at the moment.

It was obvious that we were overspending and living beyond our means.
But unbelievable that the major investor was unaware on the spending. Why have Board meetings, reports and budgets like any normal business.
Just seems on the outside like a chaotic mess with no communication.
PDC was getting it right on the pitch for sure and us Supporters were loving every minute of it.
Bound to end in tears and it has but I agree with you. We now need to move on.

Yes of course Black went to board meetings (or did he? someone said he often sent a proxy), which is why he seems to have mis-managed his own money by not asking tough enough questions or even asking them at all. But at the end of the day, he has transferred a large amount of his own wealth to the club. I don't know of many people who would do that with the good grace that he has.

I wish Jed and others success but i have a horrible feeling we are going back to the days of league2 mid table unless we get promoted this year! There whole model is on sustainability and putting very little money in!
He's guilty about not keeping a closer eye on things but as others have said, he would have expected Wray (although he does seem to have had misgivings about that one - maybe he just couldn't find anyone to replace him earlier?) and Watkins to have done that. You seem to be pilloring the guy for not running a tighter ship and then expecting him to pump even more money into the club. You can't have it both ways!!
As for "absolute rubbish" - you have no idea whether or not what he tweet is true. Nor do I, but the guy's comments seem reasonable and seem to fill in some of the gaps that have been missing from PDC's statements.
And as for criticising the new board for wanting sustainability - isn't this actually a good thing in the long-term? Do you want the whole club to be built on a bed of sand that just gets washed away when a backer wants to/has to pull out (as was virtually the case this time)?
Oh, and we've spent exactly SIX season in what's now FL2. Two of those saw us win it and one other saw us get promoted, so we've never really had "the days of FL2 mid table".

On that basis, we don't know exactly how good a manager he is. Things like fitness can be measured - and few would deny they were fitter than the season before.
But you can't judge him solely on results. This year, we're top, but Yeovil are in the play-offs on a fraction of the budget. Who's done a better job so far - PDC or Gary Johnson who's probably had less than half the money to spend?
Man City are 2nd in the PL but Mancini's spent a fortune, so most people wouldn't say he's doing a better job than, say, Michael Laudrup, who hasn't got a sheikh bankrolling him.
So with PDC we can accept his achievements but we'll only know how good a manager he is when he's further along in his career. If he goes to WHU, and gets them to punch above their weight then that shows his ability. But if he goes there, has more to spend than a lot of other clubs, and they end up in the bottom three then maybe he'll have been found out a little.

Spoilt Rich Kids falling out over money and using STFC as a battleground - Black says himself he stuck to his guns and decided not to put any more money in! He could have kept the club going to the summer but chose not too!
What gets me is that he says Paolo and Spencer knew Ritchie was being sold, "Di Canio and Spencer knew this and there had, I'm told, been a lot of discussions" then immediatley back tracks and says "AFAIK" as far as i know"they had been consulted and had accepted that it might happen".

At some AB was going to stop investing, would you be happy to keep investing £200K a month to keep the clubs head above water especially with PdC demanding more and more.Yes he could have gone on investing but he choose not to.

PdC will never be a legend now, yes he got us out of the 4th Div. with a big budget and looked like we could have gone up again, but ask yourself one question, Why did he walk out when he did?
I'll tell you this, I'd rather be in the position we are today than 2 weeks ago with PdC in charge and the real threat of administration and possible 20 point deduction

Disappointed in the way he left but that is PDC he is his own man and imo felt he was STFC . Can't see a big club taking a chance on him but could be proved wrong ,
Be interesting to know the player's views on Paolo ,on his public rants on individuals . Surely they must of got annoyed after a good win and all the chants were for PDC ? Who knows maybe some of them played in fear of doing something wrong and getting hauled off ?
Anyway our club moves on hopefully to the championship although we do have the hardest run in , but in these players our squad is more than capable COYMR

As I said earlier it appears that Jay Wray has been weak and added to the budget using AB's money.
I am of the opinion that the beloved Wray has let both sides down here.
Mr Black has said above that he funded this club against his wishes during last season and had agreed to do it again this season while he sought a buyer. That shows incredible loyalty to us the fans IMO as he could easily have pulled out and left up the creek without a paddle.
It was only when the budget set by him started to be increased against his wishes that he started to apply the brakes by sacking Wray.
Paolo has been let down as well. Not by Mr Black but by JW bowing to his every demand.
As I said above I hope this unhappy episode is not dragged out as it could get nasty and Paolo will do himself more harm than good if he does continue to pursue it.

However playing devil advocate, to me it appears that Paolo could have broadsided our clubs former directors over many issues before now, but in doing so would he start another car crash that may well ruin all the work he and his staff had put in up until last Tuesday evening.
Could it be that he is still trying to protect the team. I do not know. BUT THAT IS THE POINT HERE..NO ONE THAT I AM AWARE OF THAT HAS POSTED ON THIS SITE KNOWS THE TRUTH.
So if Mr Black, or Mr Patey puts an article in the press or on twitter, Paolo surely has to consider if it is damaging his reputation, and if it is, then he must decide if or how to respond.
No one else is going to stand up for him. THEY CAN'T, BECAUSE THEY DO NOT KNOW..
The same can be said of Mr Wray. He gets a verbal kicking of Mr Black and it seems many accept it as fact. It may well be, but again,WE DO NOT KNOW. We are only hearing one side of a story.
That being the case, as much as it may hurt, I feel Paolo's side needs to be heard to redress the balance.
On a positive note, and again, only if it's true, and we do not know, but if it is true that Mr McCory and Paolo have been talking or are going to talk, then surely that can only be a good thing and hopefully the start of repairing broken bridges.

All hell breaks loose, with Paolo defending his name and giving warts and all revelations of his time at Swindon, doing no-one any good.
I believe this is the first time since he has been at the club that he has received anything other than glowing public comments from the STFC ivory towers, and these comments from SWP and Black will upset him plus he will surely want to defend his reputation.
I think he'll kick off big time, unless Jed can sort things out.

At last we hear something constructivefrom Andrew Black, albeit one-side, it's only taken 5 years!!!! But it does take two to tango. Andrew, most Town fans will always be grateful for your investment of money, however, you can hardly complain when you kept yourself at such a distance and only got involved when you felt the need to throw a tantrum. I recall reading your blog after the Charlton play-off second leg - you left before the penalties started just to beat the traffic!!!! You must have been the only person in the stadium that night to leave early. It was clear to me then that your (self inflicted) involvement with the club was bizaar to say the least. You blame PDC for not being able to manage upwards, but you need to take a look at yourself because you clearly did not manage downwards. The basic rule of management is, if it's wrong at the bottom, then it's wrong at the top. Anyway, it's a real shame that so much damage has been done. You almost took our club out of existence these past 4 weeks despite your promise not to cause a car-crash, I just hope that we can see an end to this sorry saga and move on. For all Town fans, promotion in May will be a welcome tonic.

He talked briefly about. What he has gone through to get this take over through and whatev happens in the future his efforts shouldn't go unnoticed. He slept in his lawyers for two days.
He mentioned what a stand up bloke AB was and that he desperately tried to get him to retain a small stake.
He also mentioned the plays are absolutely buzzing and how impressed he has been with Ward and Miller and how knowledgeable they are. I asked if they had an opportunity longer term and he said maybe.
He also emphasised that whatever the result on Saturday, it will not reflect on those two and went on to say how he has taken the mick out of Fraser, who is loving being back involved and seems to be well known to Jed.
He didn't offer too much comment on PDC only to say that he was still contacting Spencer last if only to be able to look into fanda eyes and say that at least he tried.
Like I said, he seems a straight bloke and as we were talking he was stood there with a junior STFC shirt in pink that he had promised a little girl on twitter.
Thumbs up from me.

change this tendency if he is to progress in management in the future

So now its to a new Chapter of realism. Yes the target is to win the league, at the very least secure promotion, but the realism is that we must the find the resources to ensure we can at least maintain our position in the Championship. There is no point in going straight up to fall straight back down, So who ever manages the club, finances becomes key again.

I did hear someone that does a little casual work for Paolo and was mentioned over lunch that at the moment he is very upset , he did tell this person he would be staying around for about another 4 or 5 weeks . With an ego like Paolos I guess the hurt cuts that little bit deeper . Nobody at our club wishes any of the parties any hurt or pain I am sure , it was sort of fun while it lasted , we move on . PDC your song should be played loud at the CG tomorrow. Liar by the Sex Pistols - go get the lyrics. Oh PDC there's only one mr bighead, Cloughie - now run on home and count your cash.

Apparently Curbishley had it in his contract that players could not be sold without his consent. But after that case ended up costing West Ham £2m, would any club be daft enough to put a clause like that in a manager's contract.....?

PDC has probably let us and himself down by the way he has gone about things. Most of us won't miss the negative aspects but we should not forget the positives.
Don't forget, it was less than two years ago we were sliding towards relegation with Danny Wilson stood arms folded on the touch line, watching a team that the year before should have gone up, seemingly incapable of doing anything about it.
The team was unfit, lazy, split into factions, devoid of spirit, ideas and direction and discipline on and off the pitch was a shambles.
Then if things couldn't get any worse we appointed Paul Hart, an uncharismatic stoic, to finish the job and take us down with a whimper.
Most of the team that took us down couldn't wait to clear off and we looked like a club on the ropes.
Then we appointed PDC, which raised a few eyebrows, including mine, who had to assemble practically a whole squad from scratch.
He made plenty of mistakes along the way and was allowed to do so, but he gave us a team to be proud of, who were fitter than any town side since Macari's days, beat more higher league opposition than any time I can remember and were disciplined both on and off the pitch.
His approach may have ruffled a few feathers, alienated players and upset some senior pros, but this was what was needed after Wilson.
We are all agreed that Andrew Black saved our club but before we start judging Paolo too harshly let's not forget how he transformed our team from a shambolic laughing stock to the pride of the town in less than two years.
Personally, after taking everything into consideration, I wouldn't have changed the last two years for the world.

Who offered Di Canio a contract in the first place?Thats the big question. If they didn't want him no one forced them to take him on and no one forced Black to pump all that money in?If they wanted a cheap option then don't offer Di Canio stupid wages in the first place.Like anyone of us,if you we're offered a massive pay increase to do your job you currently do then you would accept in.So someone mucked this up at the start. Therefore Di Canio did a fantastic job with the tools they kept on giving him.Still think they knew that if they gave Di Canio promises that they couldn't keep ie the deadline of the deal going through by Monday. Then Di Canio would react and walk. Then the board don't have to pay him or his team any compensation.Mission accomplished.I will miss everything about the guy!

Comes across to me PDC put himself in a position and the end result was not the one he wanted but one he could have stopped by just saying i will wait until the deal is complete.
This to shows a strong show of strength from the new management,IF my above scenario is true, in that they are showing who is in charge.
Someone resigns, the boss does not have to chase them and beg them to stay.
Now in support of PDC,i have enjoyed most of his tenure here with his passion and professionalism and pride he showed and installed for Swindon.

I still don't understand why PDC thought his job was impossible, when he was able to work with resources beyond the wildest dreams of most of his rivals. I'm disappointed but not in the least bit surprised at the way it's ended. His frequent aggressive and theatrical outbursts towards the club were a strong clue as to the way it was going. Everything Andrew Black has said rings true. If he's made it up, he's not only a superhuman genius with a fertile imagination but he's also a highly devious and mean spirited individual - which hardly seems consistent with being happy to sit in the background and effectively pay off millions of pounds of debt owed by the club. What a b@stard, eh?
.
The last thing we need is for this thing to drag on and distract everyone from the real business of winning promotion. Tomorrow's performance and result are crucial. I'd go as far as to say a good showing and a win might well see us march on to the title; a weak performance could see us slide rapidly down the table. I'm very excited and very apprehensive about tomorrow.
.
Goodbye and many thanks to Black and Di Canio. Hello to the future - with fingers firmly crossed.
Just watched the Notts County v Bury game, Thought Bury played really well 1st half and the goal scorer Schumacker looks a class act. Second half Bury fell apart at the back and conceeding 4 goals in 16 minutes they obviously have weaknesses that William (if he can ever learn to beat a goalie 1 on 1) will exploit.
Had to smile when reading the pre- league cup article that Don always relished a 1 on 1, how many times did we see him score from those situations. Think Don needs to show Williams how to shake the hips and shimmy, because he can't shoot through the goalie he might as well go round him.
Pundit Ronnie Moore seems to have settled for a play-off place at best for tranmere, wish them well as long as it doesn't effect us.

The saga is now over and we have both sides of the story and we are perhaps seeing the parties in a different light.

Why not??? Any manager worthy of respect has to be judged on his wins percentage. There are of course many also rans, that actually do not get the appreciation of their efforts, but at the end of the day they rarely win trophies either, so sorry mate I don't see the point you are trying to make. Football league in todays world is result driven, hence high percentage of managers losing their jobs without taking into consideration some of the points you have raised. If yeovil did get promotion do you really think they will stay there and if they didn't do you really believe Gary J would still be in a job next year?
With regards to paolo he'll never take on a job with no finance, we were good for him as he was for us, I honestly believe he is going to find it difficult to find another English league club, having said that his results with us may tempt someone somewhere, god help the players if they like a beer and don't train too hard.

This crap is as about as boring as waiting for the take over .
I would go for the guy at Reading, strong self belief, good guy with the players, goes about his work in a quiet, diligent and honest fashion.

You disagreed with Black questioning how good a manager Di Canio is. I pointed out that he was given far more resources than any other manager in FL2 so just because we won it doesn't automatically make him a great manager - we need to see how well he does at a club where he hasn't got more money to spend than everyone else before we get an idea of that.
Obviously it does not follow that money automatically buys success but any board backing their manager more than other clubs are backing theirs would expect results - if not the championship then probably promotion and certainly the play-offs.
Di Canio delivered but he was given the tools to deliver. I'm not saying none of it was down to him but winning the title doesn't automatically make him the best manager in FL2 last season - what about Shrews or Crawley getting promoted on a fraction of the budget PDC had? Doesn't that show that their managers did a great job (and I despise Fatty Evans)?
If Yeovil get promoted I would be surprised if they managed to stay up next season. Then again, I'd be surprised but delighted if we could as we'd be small fish in a much bigger pond. If either us or YTFC stayed up it would be a great achievement (although I think we'd be in a better position to try to kick on after that).
Would they sack Johnson if they got relegated? Possibly. Loads of managers have got their team promoted to uncharted territory, got relegated and ended up getting sacked - we did it to Bert Head.
No I don't think PDC would take a job with no money either. I also think the stuff he's coming out with now are probably not helping him sell himself to a new club.

Davidsyrett wrote:Dave, Get your facts right, before mouthing off. StanHarlands shirt is absolutely right, Paolo worked within the budget he was given. he was not responsible for exceeding the cap, the embargo came about because the financial gurus within the club f**ked up, they mistakingly thought they did not have to pay the tribunial fees within this years budget, therefore January's part of the budget had to be brought forward to november to get us out the sh*t. That was not the fault of Paolo and if it had not have happened the January budget would have been intact and we would not have been faced with selling off one of our prize assets for peanuts and probably been allowed to bring in the 3 quality loanees he agreed.

Thankyou Mr Black. I haven't seen this club spend like it has since Paolo was here for a long time. Looking back now he was like a kiddy in a sweet shop. Well done as look where we are now
No matter how much this debate will
Go on between you and Paolo thanks so much for your contribution towards this club. Legend in my eyes
DiCanio did not set his own budget.
If Black was not happy at any point during this ride, he should have acted like the majority share holder and grown a pair himself.
I'm grateful for what Mr Black appears to have done, but please, he started the car crash, and far from not putting his foot on the brake much earlier, it appears from his actions, he did not even have hold of the wheel....
PAOLO WORKED WITHIN HIS SET BUDGET, how many times has it been said and proven...
How do you know that PdC kept to his budget, AB remarks suggest otherwise, that JW was unable to say no to a man he idolised.
Too many people have become brainwashed by the man, He did a great job for 18mths with a very healthy budget but the last few weeks has seen him taint that legacy very badly. PdC was always going to crash & burn, unfortunately it happened sooner rather than later.

The club don't own the ground the council do
Even if the club could buy it there's a covenant on it
Even if the council could and would remove that convenant I'm sure that even a council as incompetent as SBC would require it transferred to the site of a new stadium and that stadium built before lifting the covenant on the CG
The proposed redevelopment was for the club's benefit - the capacity is too small for the FLC, we've got no boxes and none of the other facilities that many FLC clubs has got. I doubt very much that any of the board would have made the killing you think they would.
I assume you're happy for the club to just languish in FL1 then?
