Supermarine win sparks survival hopes
SUPERMARINE coach Gavin Russ believes his side’s 26-24 victory over Weymouth could reignite their challenge to stay in Southern Counties South.
The South Marston side admitted defeat in their battle to beat the drop following the 56-0 loss to Wootton Bassett in January, but uncertainty continues to surround how many clubs will be relegated from the league at the end of the season.
With only one team going down still a possibility, Russ believes his side now have a chance to overhaul second bottom Oakmeadians after a try from Gary Trevett, a penalty try, and 16 points from the boot of Stu Dawson were enough to claim victory against Weymouth.
“I don’t think anyone really knows what is going on with the leagues, because I think Slough are bottom of Southern Counties North, and we don’t know who will go down because they could restructure and move people across,” he said. “All we can do is try and get as many points as we can, but if it is one team going down I think we could be in with a chance.
“It all depends, but we have a great belief now and we will have to wait and see.”
Russ continues to be impressed with the positivity which surrounds his squad, which he believes played a major part in their victory on Saturday.
“There was a good vibe around the club which was important, and I asked the guys to go out there an play the game we have been trying to play all season,” he said.
“It just seemed to work for us and we kept the ball and played a tight game, and kicked well to put them on the back foot.
“We made them work hard, and that paid off because of the belief we had, which gives everyone a real lift.”
In Dorset & Wilts 2 North, Cricklade earned a 10-8 victory over Wootton Bassett 2nds.
