SWINDON TOWN: Board hope to appoint new boss before Saturday

DECISION TIME: Town chairman Jed McCrory DECISION TIME: Town chairman Jed McCrory

SWINDON Town’s new owners hope to appoint a replacement for Paolo Di Canio before the weekend trip to Coventry.

The Advertiser understands the Robins’ board is keen to bring in a manager after watching Town’s meek performances in the 1-1 draw with Preston last weekend and the 1-0 home defeat to lowly Bury on Tuesday night.

Several candidates have put their names forward for the role, while a national newspaper reported last night that Swindon have already failed in an attempt to bring Glenn Hoddle back to the County Ground and that an offer is being prepared for Crawley duo Richie Barker and Steve Coppell.

However, the Adver understands no such approaches have been made or are being considered.

Speculation linking Town with Exeter boss Paul Tisdale intensified yesterday when it emerged that he would not be undertaking his pre-match media commitments today, but it is believed that the Grecians’ manager will not be joining Swindon.

McCrory met with joint caretaker player managers Darren Ward and Tommy Miller yesterday to discuss the direction of the club’s management structure for the remainder of the campaign, and it is understood that the pair agree drafting in a new boss is the correct move at this stage.

The Town hierarchy will now look to make an appointment as soon as possible, with the intention of securing a manager in time for the visit to the Ricoh Arena.

After the loss to Bury, Miller stated that a “new voice” was needed to guide the Robins to promotion from League One.

Meanwhile, Di Canio has confirmed that he will not be returning to Swindon Town as manager.

The Italian quit the County Ground last week citing “broken promises” made by the previous board at the club, but pockets of fans had hoped that the extrovert former Lazio forward would make a remarkable U-turn and come back to the the Robins following the purchase of Town by new owners.

However, that was never likely and Di Canio revealedthat his “chapter” with Swindon is closed.

“I don’t want any more from now that someone speculates with my name and tells people that maybe one day I can come back,” he told Sky Sports News.

“That is not fair for the fans and so my chapter at Swindon is finished in terms of being manager of Swindon Football Club.

“I’m a straight man, I handled a situation this year that was absolutely incredible and one day I came out to say it was untenable. The regret is only that we brought this club to the top in an incredible environment this year, without any help.”

Good morning lads:

They are keen to appoint someone before Saturday.

And i bet we get 2 or 3 new players in next week......

It'll all come good....i just feel this new era at the CG will maybe not the wild rapid ride we're all used too over the last 18 months....

But i think it'll be a more secure and happy one....

Jimmy Floyd would be good or Tim Sherwood would be my preference.

As much as i like Calderwood as he was a great player for us his managerial experience has been a disaster so wouldnt want him.

I hope we make a shrewd decision to get us back and playing how we know we can unlike the disaster we saw Tuesday night.

Getting additional players in is key as well and really we need players in before saturday otherwise we will be struggling.

Agree getting some good loan players in in the short term is key. I'm not sure we will be able to get players in quite so easily as we have done over the last couple of seasons now. We might not be seen as such a good prospect any more.

JFH would be a great choice. It's the 'until the end of the season' that is my only concern. Haven't we had enough of 'temporary' and 'interim'? As someone said yesterday, we'll have quite a few players out of contract soon, it would be far easier for a permanent manager to start thinking about these.
Can't help feeling it'll be Tisdale, no matter what has been said in the above article. He has to be better than the Crawley duo, surely?

Although, perhaps if we don't use the word 'interim' when discussing the next manager, there's a small chance we could land rafa benitez!!

Owen Coyle

I can't see this board poaching another club's manager and coaches, that would mean paying compensation and if money is as tight as I think it is, they won't be paying out more than they have too.

From out of work managers in the UK, that are prepared to work at League 1 level, Not sure if Coyle would, but him or Wise would be two of the top ones available. Someone mentioned yesterday Butcher had resigned from Inverness, not sure if that was a wind up, but he was having a go at their fans for not turning out whilst they are second in their premiere.

Coventry has had 40 applications for their vacancy, think ours would be more like 10. If they go for one from that list, then I believe the next managers name has already been mentioned.

Because Swindon are a bigger team than Cheltenham, but not so much larger that he'd be out of his depth (particularly if we don't go up this season). Same goes for Gary Johnson or Tisdale - all have got experience of working to a budget, but they'd have a bit more money to work with at the Town.

Not sure we'd have to pay that much compensation to a team in a lower division, but they'd always be expecting their manager might want to move on if they start doing well.

Hardly a name mentioned has inspired me and we are now panicking to get someone signed up tomorrow. The ghosts of Malpas or Hart are very frightening and I don't want to see the wrong man signed in haste on a three year plus contract that we have to pay up mid season next year.
I'm not a negative person but I am now resigned to us finishing mid table . This is a realistic expectation with all the upheaval. Lets aim high for a manager with a good, attractive footballing ethos who will bring promotion and knows what is required to do so - Anyone from:

- Keegan (a bit of a left-field choice but worth a punt)
- Di Matteo
- Adkins
- Coppell
- Curbishley
- Coyle

We do not want or need a second rate manager - If we are to get promoted we need to show clear intention to both the current squad of players and our main promotion rivals.

Appointing a second rate manager will galvanise our oppposition and the play-offs will ultimately be out of our reach.

Come on STFC board - Make a strong decision to retain good football, a promotion challenge and ensure that the hard work achieved over the past 18 months is not wasted so close to potential glory....

Number two's generally are number two's for a reason. Calderwood is a good #2, Gorman was a good #2, Malpas is a good #2 as was Budgie Byrne, same for Cloughie's Peter Taylor and many many more . Kerslake may be a good #2 at Cardiff but could he hack it as the main man ? I don't want to prejudge but my gut feeling is he should stay #2 at the Bluebirds (red shirts ) or cut his teeth somewhere else, if he's good we'll have him later.

These people are never coming to Swindon. I said yesterday we will get what we are prepared to pay for, which means a journeyman manager from L1?2

Can't understand why people would think any of the above know even where Swindon is!,apart from Hoddle of course.

I'm not a negative person but I am now resigned to us finishing mid table . This is a realistic expectation with all the upheaval. However if we get the right man who in my opinion should be a strict disciplinarian and great tactician and 2/3 new players immediately , then mid table is where we'll be.

Agree Steamin-in, if Kevin Mac becomes the chosen one, it would be a bit unfair to pre-judge him before he starts, after all Mourinho started as an interprettor for Bobby Robson, Atkins was a physio.

As for the odds - bookies won't be taking a lot of bets on any club's new manager, let alone the Town's. It's just freebie publicity when SSN get their "expert" into the studio to fill airtime.

No not from the dithering we've seen so far, I would be surprised if new manager will be in place by Saturday. Given choice I'd rather have a loan player like Pack lined up, I know he might have changed his mind but if nobody is speaking with Cheltenham, how do we know if that's the case. If Ferry isn't back for Saturday I can see navarro and Miller being steam rolled on saturday. Interesting News report from the Coventry Telegraph

"Paolo Di Canio attracts controversy with a seemingly magnetic force that would no doubt polarise both fans and board members.

‘I’m a fascist, not a racist’ was Di Canio’s famous defence of his straight-armed salute to fans while playing for Lazio back in 2005.

His admiration for Mussolini is marked with a tattoo on his arm that reads ‘Dux’, Latin for ‘leader’ and a name that Mussolini went by.

His playing days will be remembered for the moment he shoved referee Paul Alcock to the floor, describing Alcock’s fall afterwards as ‘like a drunken clown’.

As manager of Swindon he fell out with just about everyone at the club, including our very own Leon Clarke (now that would be an interesting reunion…), and the entire Town Board.

So why, after all this, would I advocate appointing Di Canio as Coventry City manager?

Because he’s a little bit special.

Following a fine for his salute, Di Canio met with Italian holocaust survivors to share and understand the horrors they’d witnessed.

In January, he bought pizzas for every fan who helped clear the Swindon pitch of snow before a match.

He even offered to spend £30,000 of his own money to keep several loan players at Swindon when the club could no longer afford to keep them.

Coventry City has become sedate; a club drifting along in a sea of mundanity.

Di Canio would breathe new life into the place, lift the ennui that seems to have engulfed us, and make football interesting again.

* He’s already shown his managerial credentials at Swindon where he looked to be heading for back-to-back promotions before his resignation.

Behind the tantrums, the outspoken politics, the bravado, there is a bit of genius in the Italian.

Picture the statue outside our club shop: the last genius we had as our leader, arm raised, not as a salute, but defiant in his own modest way.

If Sisu want to achieve anything at Coventry they need a manager who is a strong leader, with a bit of something special about them.

Di Canio fits the bill, if Sisu are willing to pay it.

Given choice I'd rather have a loan player like Pack lined up, I know he might have changed his mind but if nobody is speaking with Cheltenham, how do we know if that's the case. If Ferry isn't back for Saturday I can see navarro and Miller being steam rolled on saturday. I also realise a new manager will want his own people in, but I would have thought most would love to have Pack here on board.
Yes I was looking forward to Pack joining us but I doubt he will come at the moment for various reasons. I think the new manager needs time to look at Luke Rooney before he sends him as part of any deal. Loan players in ASAP in the short term please.

I would love to see Shearer in the dug out but not sure we could afford him. I am surprised not to see Peter Reids name mentioned. I think he would be a great short term manager and if he takes us up lets give him the job. Jed knows him and he has done this sort of thing before. And if the brown stuff hits the fan again he is always good for an electric bill.

Underwhelmed with McDonald, hope its wrong but not a shock, cheap option compared to Paolo, less money demands which I guess we all new they wanted.
Exmouth, the only thing we can do is support our team, that means the players and whoever the management team is that get taken on,i will neither be underwhelmed nor overwhelmed but any negativity given to the new manager will 99% of the time affect the players,if that happens now then we can definitely write this season off.I would prefer we take on a Manager with at least a little experience,we just don't have the time left this season to allow a rookie to bed in.

Exactly. Nobody knows how the next manager is going to do - he could the best manager Swindon have ever had, or the worst. Chances are he will be somewhere in between. If you are truly a Swindon fan then you will get behind him, whoever he is.
Unless it's Steve Evans, couldn't stomach that.

Steve Evans, aka Mr Slither.
So not Pdc then not Evans or Turner is there anyone you actually might like Wiz?
Can't see Evans or Turner coming here, the two from Crawley would get my vote as would Owen Coyle or Edgar Davids. Have no objection to the McDonald bloke either. JFH could be a good punt.

Who ever comes in will take three or four games to get to how to get the best out of the players as he sees them.

Who ever comes in Jock, will be almost guaranteed to be of a more even temperament than the last incumbent, and dressing room matters will probably be addressed there and not in public. One thing has slightly surprised me of late, and that is after the announcement of the embargo, that it took PDC sooooo long before playing his final cards. I don't think we have heard the last of the saga yet, More to come in the weeks ahead I'm sure, but one question went unanswered for me, to what degree did Spencer influence the final decision, and who is he with now ? and does he still have any contracts with Town players, as that may have a bearing on player movements this summer.

Hi Chaps

If we are talking of the 89/90 season with Ossie at the helm then it was Mick Mills in charge of Stoke City not Alan Ball who took over that job when Mills got sacked the week after that game. The game sticks in my memory for two reasons - one that all through the game the Stoke fans chanted "Mills Out" which we all joined in with in the end and the fact that when we scored our 5th and 6th goals the Stoke fans celebrated it by doing the conga at the Stratton Bank - just really funny at the time and shows the best side of football fans.

"K-Mac" is actually a great shout I think, the Villa players loved him and he guided Villa well prior to Houllier taking over ..

This taken from the Telegraph

7:00AM BST 14 Sep 2010
The unobtrusive Scotsman has steered a course through the jagged rocks of Martin O’Neill’s defection and a 6-0 spanking at Newcastle to bring his temporary side to seventh berth – nearly, oh so nearly, third – in the Premier League?
Having passed him over for the leading role, the Villa board have thrown the 49-year-old the rather mangy bone of letting him continue as caretaker manager for another couple of matches. And isn’t 'K-Mac’ making the most of it. Had Ashley Young scored in the first half, his gang would be third.
For those used to O’Neill, whose agitation on the sideline suggested a column of ants was marching its way up his inside leg, MacDonald started his caretaker job looking like Mr Cellophane from Chicago, hiding in the dugout, wishing he were “invisible”.
The transition now he hasn’t got the gig is complete. The suit is gone, and you couldn’t keep this guy out of the technical area with a restraining order. The new MacDonald: Martin O’Neill Mk II.
True, under MacDonald the back four leaves gaps wide enough to turn a supertanker — hence Kenwyne Jones’ equaliser before Robert Huth’s late winner — but MacDonald’s talent is 'bringing players on’.

We were also in FL2 at the time. A relegated team is always going to be in with a shout of going straight back up, especially if you can get them fit and motivated, and have plenty of backing.

Now, we're at the top of FL1 and probably punching at or about our weight. An inexperienced manager is going to find it very difficult to maintain where we are let alone try to kick on a bit (and against teams that are bigger than STFC).

How can this be Bury hadn't won in 12 yet they only had to turn up on Tuesday to claim the points with their one telling effort of the game.
Strange when the same rabble basically had stormed to the top of the league eh? So that's the same two cakes really except one key ingredient was missing the fruit which mixed all the ingredients together to make the ultimate cake.
I'm not stating anything as fact just my opinion in the same way as others and indeed your good self does.
I sincerely hope the new regime and manager will be able to work the oracle and achieve the goal of promotion which love him or loathe him looked far more likely before he resigned than it does now IMO.
I'm personally not confident that the new owners can deliver the holy grail we all crave especially after listening to Rick Wakeman talking about pop concerts rather than promotion.

Different chef with different ingredient's just may have a longer shelf life though Jock, if we don't make it out of this league it wont be a catastrophic disaster,to be honest a lot of people may be clutching at straws holding on to the dreams they have harboured for many a year, i believe we should hold onto those dreams for as long as feasible but without to much expectation. Sorry Wiz but our chance of championship footie went out the door when your best mate threw in the towel.
Jock, just because you have thrown the towel in why do you feel the need to keep stating your opinions as if they are facts? you may think our chances went out the window when Di Canio left but like everyone else you don't know that.Ever the optimist eh!
Wiz don't let Malky drag you down or else you to will turn into a miserable bleeder.
Milky Malk stay away from the rope and chair, its not worth it!
Steve hello don't know if you've seen the last two games but if you had you'd have witnessed the most clueless hapless rabble you've ever seen masquerading as footballers.

I really do hope I'm wrong and time will of course tell with the Coventry game being an important indicator of our chances. Tight lines!
We have a club, we have short to mid term stability from now,in a while we will have a new management team so we are still in with a shout, lets not play hang-man just yet. It really isn't a case of if you/me or GUV are right or wrong about where we finish at the end of the season it matters more that we keep our chins up or we will start getting BOOING happening, god forbid, and this will only add to lack of confidence. I am aware if PDC had stayed we would of been in a better position to get out of lge1 but he never, first time in my life i have collected money from the bookies without a big smile,i wasn't having a go with you Jock just trying to lift that great big rain cloud from above your head.Hold tight.
Good GRIEF steve you could aways give me the money if it will ease your burden lol hows it going mate?

Perfect appointment. Won't cost a lot as he is unproven, won't be too hard to get rid of should he not deliver this season, leaving a straightforward path open at the end of the season should new manager recruitment be needed.
.
Good luck matey, but deliver promotion and secure a lengthy contract, or fail and you're a cheapo cheerio come May.
.
The board wins all ways round.

......which worries me immediately!!
SAP ! We dont know the length of his contract yet , it might only just be till the end of the season , a safe pair of hands if you ask me
Very True!!!
...
I still don't have an opinion though - I'm not going for the doom and gloom as he may come in and put a firework up the backsides of each of our players - just don't know ANYTHING about the guy.
...
I hope he has the same effect that every new manager has for teams that then have to play us.......lets go and stuff the Covvie's!! :-)
...
Actually - let's hope we've got enough players to field a team with a few subs!

cant possibly be any worse, can we?
Ooohhh!!!!...but soooo troooo!!

Let's see what he can bring in on loan by the time we play Walsall....and hope we get the kick-start reaction on Saturday.
