SWINDON TOWN: MacDonald is new Swindon boss

MacDonald is the new Swindon boss MacDonald is the new Swindon boss

KEVIN MacDonald has been officially named as the new manager of Swindon Town.

The former Aston Villa assistant boss is expected to take charge of the trip to Coventry on Saturday.

In a statement on the club's official website, chairman Jed McCrory said: "His is a hugely important appointment at a significant moment in Swindon’s recent history and we are delighted to appoint a football man of Kevin’s calibre as our new manager.

“This is a clear message that the new board is determined to drive on for promotion this season and continue to try and bring success to Swindon.

“Kevin has fantastic football credentials as a double-winner with Liverpool during his playing days and he is an excellent coach.

“He has great connections with top players and he is a proper football man. We have every faith for Kevin now to lead Swindon from the front at a pivotal moment in the campaign. It is a new start for Kevin and for our new board of directors and we move forward together with every confidence.”

Very sensible appointment, welcome to Swindon Kevin!

He's got years of experience working under some top managers, well respected, must have lots of tactical acumen having spent so long as a premier league coach, and will be a level-headed leader, which won't be a bad thing after all that's happened recently.

Couldn't really be a bigger contrast to King Paulo but I'm quite excited by his appointment - roll on Saturday!

Please don't compare to the last manager. He will do things his way. So lets give him all the support we can,as it might take a couple of games for him to settle.

Not " blow you're socks off " but a safe appointment in my opinion. A villa mate of mine said he is very well respected with the fans at his former club , and should have been given a chance to manage villa , and was sh! t on by Paul Lambert.

I would like to add that this is a very sensible appointment and he is a guy that is well respected in football circles. I have been reading about him on the Villa forum and he is held in very high regard by the fans there. As mentioned above, he is the perfect choice to follow PDC and a calm and experienced head is exactly what we need right now. Thanks to Jed and the new board for acting fast and making a decent choice. Welcome to Swindon Kevin and I hope your stay is long and successful.

Much better appointment than expected I really feared the worse and thought we'd end up with Newell, Hartford and Stein. Worked under O'Neil so would have learned plenty and Villa fans wanted him to stay and manage Villa when O'Neil left. Well pleased.

He is sure to have made many contacts in the game so hopefully will be able to attract loan players in ASAP.

Interesting to see some negative comments already, especially about him being the cheap option. If Di Canio hadn't wasted so much money, then perhaps the old board and Di Canio would still be here.
BUT, they have gone and another new chapter begins with new board and new owners. I hope this will be a good appointment. I have spoken to a Villa pal since news broke earlier and he said, that in his first game in temporary charge he was trying to hide behind the perspex in the dugout, but grew in confidence as games passed and turned out to be quite vocal in the technical area (something that has been missing in last 2 games), he said that most Villa fans were sorry that he did not get the job.
I welcome this appointment and can look forward to the rest of the season.

Welcome KM, lets hope you start with 3 points at Coventry on Saturday. As always, I will be there to cheer the lads on

Managing the takeover in the time they did was staggering. They first took the players view with the planned review yesterday. Decision on the future then and now the next day a manager appointed. Not just that they issue a statement tonight to keep us fully informed They are indeed football people.

Well respected, and can only be good for the youth set up.

Perhaps not an eye catching appointment, and a tough act to follow, but confident with this appointment and good luck to him.

Sounds like Villa having a clearout in the coaching dept, maybe some may follow.

Credit to the board too with the quick appointment. Clearly had done their homework. 2 indifferent games with the Ward / Miller combo while they found their feet, then after a meeting they got their man within 24 hours. Good work, and taking emotion out of it probably for the best after what has happened to start afresh.

The Paolo circus has been entertaining and successful, but I think all fans didn't agree with everything that happened - and it's run it's course. Too be honest I'm trying not to be negative. But you have to admit appointing a coach with next to no managerial experience is a gamble when we are so close too promotion. And it was jed himself that said we will appoint an experience top manager not me. With reference to my comment about season tickets. It would not surprise me if we fail to get into playoffs because of appointment that that's what wold happen. Obviously it depends on prices aswell which is being announced in next few days. Of course I will support our man and see what happens come end of season.

Negative again, any manager who comes in is a gamble. To suggest on the night the guy is appointed that 500 season tickets will be lost is crazy. Get behind the team, after the booing on Tuesday you would think we had never played badly before.

Give the bloke a chance for goodness sake. I've gone to most home games since 1961, and many away to clubs that have been out the league for longer than a lot of peeps been supporting STFC. and have never said I'll pick and choose games. Seen the good and the bad times and I'm always there next season no matter what league we are in. Season ticket holder since 1977. Never ever not go unless I'm very ill.

The Paolo circus has been entertaining and successful, but I think all fans didn't agree with everything that happened - and it's run it's course. Paolo rescued us from the bottom of the football league, but now the fireworks are over - its time to rescue the finances of the club, consolidate, improve sustainably, play good football and progress.
Congratulations to Jed and the new board, very impressed with everything they are doing.
Good post, much as i would like to see us win promotion this season realistically I do not believe we are ready for the Championchip. Perhaps a day out at Wembley followed by storming the league next season would a sustainable long term strategy and allow measured growth.

I want to win the league, obviously, but we need a club capable of sustaining Championship football - otherwise we just have to watch our team beaten 3-0 every week!

A Top manager with experience depends on many factors. Would they still be working so in jobs at clubs as most of the applicants were probably ex sacked managers so that statement does not come over correctly. Tisdale could be deemed a top manager with experience but I would rather have MacDonald any day of the week. Unless that statement meant they would look for a top manager who has managed at the highest level then that only left one or two possibles who were out of work like Coyle and Adkins with the latter still on gardening leave so was ruled out but I am sure both these had been sacked before so what exactly would a top manager equate to. After Di Canio it will be nice to get back to some calmness.

Also KMac's history in coaching appears one of consistency being at AV since 1995 until leaving in 2012 after Paul Lambert arrived - not likely to leave us unless he doesn't get the results.

He must also know James Collins which should help the lad.

Yes its down to the players now to show just what we are capable of, but firstly with his experience hopefully he will get good respect from them. No doubt Miller and Ward will bring him up to speed.

Indeed the speed is impressive.

Clearly Jed had no difficulty in getting hold of KMac and negotiating a deal....

I wonder if Di Canio was part of the problem in selling the club?

Lots saying that no chairman will want to take a gamble on him, well maybe that put potential new STFC chairman off joining.

Obviously selling Ritchie would annoy him and there would be a good chance of him walking. To the fans the outgoing Black appearing the villain on one hand yet writing off millions on the other hand. A tweet from him to suggest the new board may be best without Di Canio.

Then the missed 5pm deadline by the new board....and then the 'attempts' to contact him the next day....

Jed obviously impressed with Black from comments made.

Hmm could it be clever manipulation from the new and old board? Was administration ever really likely?

Do you know what dream I said exactly the same to my brother and brother in law on the way home after the Bury defeat. Thompson third choice after Ferry and Fods. Great player and far better than Caddis. If Cadds did come back I would put him on the wing certainly not a defender in Thomson's class. Great appointment for manager and this will be the man to steady the ship and I am feeling even better after the comments from Villa fans who have good things to say about the guy. Talk about writing the guy off before a ball is kicked. How do you know how much he being paid almost got the Blackburn job recently that would have been on decent money. Give the Guy a chance. Who did you want then Adkins not a chance, Coyle not a chance Tisdale yes could have got him but no thanks. Time will tell and he deserves fair crack and time to settle in. I'm shocked at how much positive support there is for Kevin, as in my eyes this is a deeply uninspiring appointment, he is neither an old head in terms of managerial experience or a new up an coming manager. This appears to be another Malpas or Hart appointment.

Under Paolo we were simply the best team in the league defensively and offensively the stats back this up, so promotion is the bar to which he should be measured, if it isn't achieved then his appointment should be considered as a failure, and we shouldn't see him here next year.

I'm not a negative person but I expect certain standards, progressive attacking football being the first priority . Kevin has hardly been around teams that have delivered this, so my first heart sank when I heard the news.

As a player he achieved little, forget Liverpool he only played 40 times for them, so his time there meant little.

The board have managed to lose the best manager in the division and appointment an ageing coach in the last chance saloon, hardly an auspicious start!

A very good appointment and the new board have acted so quickly!

McDonald had recently been tipped to take over at Championship Blackburn and Forest.

To those who feel he has had no managerial experience think of the success those others with no previous experience had at Swindon. Macari, Ardiles, Hoddle, McMahon. They all achieved a promotion or two (if we forget how the FL shafted Town after Ardiles' triumph at Wembley)

McDonald has the advantage of years of being an assistant at Prem level as well as short spells in charge. He seems to have loads of respect.

As for a so called supporter threatening to not renew a season ticket.... best stay away. You are the sort of supporter not needed.

I really, really hope I am wrong but I might have to go back on the valium because things don't look great at the moment (probably glass half empty).
He left the Villa in May 2012 - 9 months ago.

Does this make you feel a tad better?
I think it's me hormones or it could be my crap research. Thanks anyway and really trying to go onwards and upwards-honestly!!

I think we were spoiled by having Di Canio as manager but as good as he was he did have some major flaws just look at Leon Clarke who has not stopped scoring, Caddis playing in the championship, Little Luke Rooney who played well after coming on late on Tuesday, all players that had crossed the a man with a bigger ego than our club. Many nice moments but also many bad times with the time that stuck in my memory when De Vita was heading off the pitch before the fourth officials board had gone up in one game that was just shocking to see. Paolo was a bully and ruled by fear and yes it seemed to work but blew a massive budget getting us in this position and I would always ask just how many other lesser managers could have has the same success with all that money.

Have you got nothing better to do Phil Spencer?

Underwhelmed!
Make that seriously underwhelmed!
Can't wait for the loan signings to arrive from Villa, in fact I wouldn't even want their first team players here!
Not a good start from the board especially after they promised a top class manager with experience?
I await the board's explanation of that statement to this appointment!
Huge huge gamble when so close to promotion!

Hmm not sure about this. First off didn't the new board say in their press conference. We will be appointing a top manager with experience ? Well failed on both counts. I could understand if t was beginning of season but this is a HUGE gamble when we are pushing for promotion. The guy has plenty of experience in coaching but coaching and managing are two different things. I will now wait until end of season before I renew my season ticket it might well be the first time in ten years that I pick and choose games next season. Well jed what's it like too wipe five hundred season tickets off with one stroke? I hope I'm wrong I really do.
My thoughts exactly. He may turn out to be a great manager but it is still a massive gamble given where we are in the league. He has only acted as a caretaker manager and manager of the Republic of Ireland reserves so very little proper management experience. The new owners aren't filling me with confidence so their performance so far.

I have been on night shifts this week so have only just got round to commenting here... I have to say I'm not sure what to think about this appointment. Of course I wish Kevin well, and will be fully supporting him from the start, but I am concerned about his lack of experience as a manager (and yes I know Paolo had no experience, but he was a particular type of person that you knew would make a good manager)... I will be very happy to be proved wrong, but I think there is a similarity here from when we appointed malpas - when the board could have appointed someone with success in managing league clubs, but instead opted for an unexpected name...

Anyway, I hope Kevin does well and wish him all the best.

Possibly Coppell. I feel this appointment shows a lack of ambition and was clearly done on the cheap (no compensation etc.). But hopefully he starts well and does a good job. But the next 3 games for him are make or break with the fans. Also waiting to see if the board back him with some loan signings. So all in all next week will be an interesting one.

When are people like you going to get real? Have the recent goings on at the County Ground taught you nothing?

We have to live within our means, we do not have billionnaire backing, nor do we have huge crowds - therefore we have to cut our cloth accordingly or we will go bust. That goes for managers and players.

This is an excellent appointment and a superb bit of decisive business by the Board.

Going tomorrow?

Quite agree Castle. I don't live in Swindon but I have a work colleague who is an Aston Villa fan and he rates this guy. Thats good enough for me to give him a chance. Yes, maybe there is a bit of 'its done on the cheap' but we needed someone in quick and we don't have money to waste paying out compensation. I for one will be right behind him as I would have been with any appointmenmt, becaise it is the club I support, not the individual. If he gets us up this year, he will be a hero and pdc can be consigned to history. I was a fan of pdc but I was concerned about the money he spent on players, who when he bought them, he told us how good they were, only for him to be slagging them off in public weeks later, telling us they weren't good enough. But he never took the blame! Who signed them, him or ?

Its just a difference of opinion, some people such as yourself have little ambition, which is fine. Yes I will be there tommorow :). I have said I hope he does well but at this stage im not impressed.

Inclined to agree with you Scott Leitch and not sure how this can be described as an excellent appointment and superb business yet. Surely time will tell.

A bit underwhelmed but that isn't to say he is not going to get my full support as will the team tomorrow at Coventry. I too will be there.

I have realistic ambition, given our constraints.

Can't see why Coppell would have been a better bet - anyone that settles for Director of Football at Crawley must have lost all ambition...
