Swindon target Windsor revenge

SWINDON coach Neil Loader and his players will be looking to put things right when they host Windsor tomorrow after a lack of focus saw them trip up in Berkshire earlier in the season.

The Greenbridge Road side go into the game on the back of four straight victories, most recently Saturday’s 13-0 win over Salisbury, which have seen them overtake Reading for third place in the South West 1 East table.

Swindon suffered a 30-28 defeat when they travelled to Windsor in October, and Loader believes the squad got ahead of themselves and forgot about the rugby as they prepared for a night out in Berkshire after the game.

“We felt we let ourselves down a bit when we went to Windsor and it would be great to put that right,” he said.

“We have been trying to maintain a social side to the club, because it is important to do that and keep a team training hard together, and part of that is that we try to create opportunities to have a little drink after matches.

“We took a bus to Windsor and were going to stay down for a few beers before coming back on the bus at about midnight, and I think some of the players forgot we had some rugby to play before we went out. Maybe in our own heads we were in the bar before we had done the business on the pitch.

“We certainly feel like we let ourselves down in that game and we should have won, so we want to put that right.”

While Swindon are pushing at the top of the league Windsor are stuck in midtable, but Loader still believes they offer his side a real threat.

“They are a good side, very solid, and they will be strong around the breakdown where they will defend their own ball and attack ours,” he said.

“They will put lots and lots of pressure on us with a rush defence where they will try and stop us from playing rugby, but they can play a bit themselves and we need to be wary of that.

“We know that if we can get some front-foot, quality, go-forward ball, we can take that pressure off ourselves and win the game. It will be a case of us trying to make the right conditions on the pitch to help us play our style of rugby.”
