SWINDON Robins will be Elite League trend-setters when the new season gets underway, after unveiling their innovative home and away race suits.

The Advertiser can reveal the first pictures of the Robins’ new kevlars, which incorporate the image of new title sponsors Excalibur with striking purple away colours.

The Blunsdon side are the first in British speedway to adopt separate identities for home and away meetings, but the purple away colours could also be worn at home to avoid clashes with the likes of Peterborough and Belle Vue who also wear red, white and black.

“It’s created a talking point which has excited the fans, and we are also adopted the corporate livery of our sponsors Excalibur which is great for the club,” co-owner Gary Patchett said.

“There are several teams in the league who wear red, black and white, and it can be hard to identify riders if they are all wearing the same colours, and the helmet colours can be hard to see.

“We may even choose to wear them on a few occasions when we are at home, with the first time probably being the home meeting with Peterborough on Sky on April 8.

“Maybe a few other clubs might be interested too, because it is an innovative idea.”

Replica shirts are set to be available in both colours, while a range of other purple merchandise is set to be made available.

Meanwhile, the Advertiser understands the Robins are due to talk to Troy Batchelor today as they look to secure his return to Blunsdon following a winter-long battle with Peterborough.

Today marks the point where any unsigned riders are automatically released to join other clubs on loan, and the Robins remain intent on bringing the new Australian champion back to the club.

The club’s press and practice day on March 7 is set to begin at 2pm, with gates opening to the public at 4pm.

The riders will take to the track at 4.30pm, and then will meet and greet fans in the Legends Lounge where the bar will be open to 8pm.

Kacper Gomolski appears to have torn a hole in the time-space continuum.

Since when has a Robin been purple, I have never heard of anything so ridiculous. The away fans will be amazed that the robin has now been transformed for away fixtures. What next a Bee is red and black. If they want to change the colours to that of the sponsors then that is fine but at least change the team nickname or would the genuine fans be upset! . .

In 2002 in Norway a new species of Robin was identified. This is known as Erithacus Purpecula as opposed to Erithacus Rubecula (Red Robin). This is in fact a purple breasted Robin and to this day still exists in the northern coastal region of Sjangefjord. Some of you speedway supporters aren't half thick.

That's really interesting thanks for the Ornithology lesson - You don't know if this Robin has a friend that prances around in a cave dressed as a bat?
