SWINDON TOWN: McCrory happy to hand out new deals... if MacDonald agrees
6:00am Tuesday 5th March 2013 in Sport By Sam Morshead
Jed McCrory
SWINDON Town chairman Jed McCrory has stressed he will do all he can to keep the out-of-contract members of the Robins’ squad at the County Ground this summer, provided manager Kevin MacDonald is happy to have them.
Nine players will see their current deals with the Wiltshire outfit expire at the end of the campaign but with all the recent turbulence around the club none have as yet been approached with a view to negotiating new terms.
As it stands, Simon Ferry, Alan McCormack, Joe Devera, Aden Flint, Tommy Miller, Raffa De Vita, Nathan Thompson, Miles Storey and Leigh Bedwell could all move on in a little under four months’ time, but McCrory is keen to hold on to some of his most prized assets as long as MacDonald is in agreement.
“That’ll be Kevin telling me,” he told the Advertiser. ”He will be evaluating the situation over the next couple of weeks. I have spoke to Darren (Ward) and Tommy and explained to them that with a new manager coming in that will be his decision.
“We don’t want anyone to leave the club, I certainly don’t want anyone to leave the club - I’d like everyone to stay together in the team and move forward as a team but that will be the manager’s decision.
“Some of them may want to leave, hopefully not but they may well want to and we’re going to have to brace ourselves for that if that’s the case. We will endeavour to keep everyone here that the manager wants to keep.”
Meanwhile, it has emerged that Nigel Worthington and Les Ferdinand had both put themselves forward as the potential next manager of Swindon before McCrory handed the job to MacDonald last week.

Think Macca, Miller and Raffa depends on whether we go up or not for me. They have something to offer as part of a squad at this level but not sure they are championship quality.
That said, we could surely get a fee for all of those if they were contracted so it might be worth signing them all on a 1 year contract and then seeing who we can bring in with a view to selling them late on in the summer/january if we bring in better.

I think the old management have handled this really badly, players like Ferry and Thompson should have been secured at the end of last year, their agents will be puttng the feelers out elsewhere for sure. Just hope when Wesleys contract is nearing the end the new management don't wait until the last minute.

Ferry, Thompson and Storey MUST be kept. Would like to see Devera and Flint too. Don't really know about Bedwell as never seen him play.

I guess what KMac will have to think about is once the budget is set and let us assume it will be the same as this season, if we have a squad of say 25 and he wants to bring in 5 new players, then 5 will have to go. So I think it is inevidible that some will not have their contracts renewed. Question is if we go up which ones will be good enough for that level because apart from Miller and maybe Macca none of them have ever played higher than div 1.

I know it happens every year, but lets stay focused on this season and get to the end of it, then we'll all have a much clearer picture as to what will need to be done for the next campagne. I am not saying, dont do anything about the contracts, just that it should be left to the ones that can do something about them,
No more talk about wanting X,Y & Z out, lets keep A,B & C. We need the team to be united, focused and as one to get across the finishing line.
When that jobs done, you can all run rampant and let the rumours fly. Until then, kindly zip it.

Ferry was on a 3 year deal - what's the point of that if you then renew it half way through?
.
Also you then have signin on and agent fees to pay as well as a likely pay rise
.
Now is the right time when he is in his last year to extend it - max existing deal and minimise extra costs
.
Also we had only just come up and were looking at building a squad to challenge at the top - why waste time and money on players already contracted ahead of new recruits?
.
Agree Miller potentially most at risk as will be 35 - maybe a player coach role?
.
Agree with Haydoner depends on league who should be tied down or not
.
But Ferry and Thompson are a must no matter what!

Only the manager and player can decide on who's staying and who isn't and that can only be done when they know what division they will be playing in, especially as that is also likely to affect finances.
That said, i'm not worried about keeping players with 'no experience at a higher level'.
Most promoted teams keep the bulk of their squad together, and just improve on it. I dont know any team that goes out and buys eleven new players upon promotion, and many great players have come up through the leagues via transfers or with their promoted clubs.
Look kat the old Wimbledon for an example, and also point at player like Austin, who had never played at our level, and certainly never at Championship level. Not done too badly though has he?

The main one being how much debt actually remains in the club - is it just the £1.5m loans from Sir Arbib and Black against the leasehold?

If in league 1 then all the players have proved they can perform at the current level so it may be their own decisions to go.
If in the champ then Ferry, Devera, Flint, Thommo and Storey are definites for me. All still young and plenty of room for improvement.
Also like to see Miller and Macca retained. Both provide experience, have been there before and will probably settle for a year at a time.
Bedwell can't be sure as never seen him play so tricky. As we are looking at an under 21 side next season it could be good business to retain him and find out through the U21s.
The only one I am not sure about is Raffa. Good ball skills but is he quick enough as a winger or strong enough to be a main striker ?
Not my decision fortunately and I trust Macca (K) will make the right decisions in time.

Navarro (know he's not involved in this yet but just saying as he was mentioned) sounded like a good signing before he came here but apart from the win over Brighton hasn't had many good games, and wouldn't start now unless we were stretched.
Flint and Devera got to be worth keeping, Flint has huge potential and Devera is solid, and knows what's expected of him here - no point in trying to replace him unless we were bringing in better than what we have.
Ferry - definitely.
Thompson - ditto.
Storey - massive potential, ditto again.
Would like to see McCormack stay, always gives his best and his breaks out of defense are a joy to watch.
Miller - tries hard and a decent player, possibly not championship quality at this stage in his career though (should we go up)
Bedwell - depends on the opportunities he's going to get, Wes owns the goalkeeping slot at the moment so might be an idea if we had someone who could push him and keep him on his toes, as well as providing cover.

A striker the likes of Lineker didn't do much tracking back but his strike rate was phenominal. Paul Ince was running all over the place, Mick Mills was very dogged at the back.
Here at the Town, we definately have a mix of all types, I'll let others decide which players are in which catagory. Some might also add that we have a few donkeys.
But lets be clear, a team full of thoroughbreds ain't gonna get us over the line and a team full of cart-horses ain't gonna get many goals.
It's all about the right balance. Don't dismiss the cart-horse in favour of the race-horse, cos without one the other can't perform.

I asked the question yesterday that as he has gone so quiet has his contract been paid discretely. However that said, he set out a new contract and it expired and he walked, perhaps his infamous legal team have informed him he has no legs to stand on. I ask this though, did Phil Spencer have any of the dealings that saw M. Ritchie leave, if so, either he did the dirty on PDC, or if he didn't PDC's argument falls flat on its face, as he WOULD have known about the deal.

Anyone notice he is only here during school dinner time or 'hometime'. Don't worry though folks, he will be (un)safely tucked up in his pit in Hamworthy by 10pm!!
PS - Afcb4death - you have still not done your homework that was set yesterday, only a D for your work today - more originality is required!!

Simon Ferry - yes
Alan McCormack - no,love his enthusiasm but i think one step to far.
Joe Devera - yes,IMO a quality defender.
Aden Flint - maybe,at this present time i would say no because of hi rashness and hoof ball, but he can improve like he has since he has been with us.
Tommy Miller - no,father time catching up with him.
Raffa De Vita - yes, improved this season in a higher division and maybe he can in the Championship, either way a quality squad player.
Nathan Thompson - yes, quality plain and simple and our good future.
Miles Storey - yes, injury hit this season, hopefully he can still make progress and at worst another decent squad player in either division.
Leigh Bedwell - don't know, not seen enough of him.

For me as his comments go would indicate that his afcb All Football Comes 1st at Brighton.
They are a far bigger club than the cherries and always will be,i think thats his problem.
Very juvenille in his comments and spelling, so maybe he is typing with one hand while the other one is jogging the bedsheets. Wonder how he explains the starch like stuff to his mum??
We at Swindon do not wish Bournemouth to go through what has happened at Swindon. We don't wish that on any club, well maybe just one that's the one down the A420.

This league is ours to win and ours to lose simply based on the teams we have still to play.
The seemingly more difficult games are away but if you look at the expanded league table you will see that, as with many clubs, our away form is better than our home form.
Playing at home, was it the pressure of Paolo or is it the pressure of playing in front of us and not wanting to let us down ?
I see Saturday as a huge test that could define the remainder of the season. Win it and we will likely knock out one of the possible challengers.
We have hoofed recently at home but played apparently played a better passing game away. I would put this down to pressure by both Us and Paolo but also by opposing teams closing us down.
I hope we play deeper to create more space to play the ball from defence. If you watch the premier league or european matches the home defence are playing the ball around much deeper than we do and they have midfielders constantly coming deep to receive it.
What have we been doing ? We get the ball, the fullbacks move to the half-way line and the midfield move around just inside the opponents half. The ball is then passed to Flint or Ward in and around the centre circle, a bit of pressure and the only option is back to Wes or a long ball into the channels.
In the Greer days we played from the penalty area, we had Douglas and Ferry as willing recipients and we built.
We as fans can help, we are all disappointed when a move breaks down or a chance is wasted but a roar of encouragement is more likely to help than a roar of derision.
Four massive matches coming up, 10 points would be awesome and set us up for the run in.

Yes its all to win, and sadly all to lose. The three teams that do go up will point to certain games as the defining moment in their campaign, but don't forget the forth team will also discover Wembley is a lonely place when you come second in that game, a bobble can shaft your season. This time I hope we do it automatically and our goal difference must remain intact because it may well come to that. There will be many twists and turns in the next few weeks and plenty of looking over the shoulder to see who is under the radar. Beware the Yeovil, everyone is writing them off, I think that is a folly to do so, they are where they are through winning games, something at times we have struggled to do which is why the teams are so close. You are oh so right about how Wilson had us set up with his spine through the team, just a shame he didn't have a bit more spine himself to sort out the rot before it went as far as it did. All done with now and this team is much better I feel, Ferry being the only survivor of that era, Flint was bought then loaned back, and is still playing much the same as when we first saw him, I had big aspirations for the lad, perhaps now we have a coach he will develop, I hope so.

In the meantime, Hart And PDC have come and indeed gone, but you still conduct your campaign of insults against Danny Wilson, your most recent in your post above.
I think it is long overdue that we looked to the future rather than the past and very much doubt that I am the only poster with that opinion.

So for the good news, the yellows are 0-4 down at half time, P45 for their manager in the morning. Doncaster behind at 1/2 time to MK Dons big result for us if it stays that way. Just need Stevenage to do the business in the second half against Brentford

We did play some great football under PDC also including Stoke City and Wigan Athletic in the cups.
What i will say is the more i think about the more it seems PDC realised he could not do much more?
