WOMEN'S FOOTBALL: Swindon beat Oxford to reach League Cup semi
6:00am Tuesday 5th March 2013 in Sport
SWINDON Town Ladies set up a South West Combination League Cup semi with Southampton after winning 4-2 at Oxford.
The visitors took the lead when Chyna Collings headed in Catherine Reid’s corner.
Oxford equalised before half-time but after the break Reid’s corner was nodded into the net by Kim Reeves.
Good work from Reid and Collings allowed Kirsty Shell to make it 3-1 before Oxford pulled one back.
Abby Picton made and finished a goal out of nothing to complete the scoring.
Swindon Town Ladies Under 15s were on the end of a 4-3 defeat at Laurel Park Vipers in the Berkshire Girls Football League Division 1 Cup.
Town took the lead when Amy Joliffe played in Jess Graham and she finished calmly, but Vipers levelled before the break.
After the interval Chloe Beeden’s quick throw went to Graham, who turned her defender and smashed right-footed past the keeper.
Graham completed her hat-trick when she skipped past two tackles and shot firmly home, but from then on matters went downhill.
When Lauren Davidson was forced off due to injury Swindon were down to 10 players and a Vipers header brought the score back to 3-2.
Despite the heroics of goalkeeper Rhiannon Brown, Vipers equalised. And then a mis-hit shot that deflected off another player gave the hosts their winner in the closing moments.
Swindon Spitfires lost ground on the top two in the South West Women’s League Eastern Division 1 after drawing 1-1 at home to Bishops Lydeard.
Spits opened the scoring just short of the half hour when Nat Haigh’s deep cross was played back across goal by Hannah Gulliver and Emily Sparkes blasted home.
The lead lasted only a matter of minutes when Suze Daw’s cross found the unmarked Natalie Poole at the far post to slot past stopper Tamsin Kellett.
Haigh rattled the crossbar in the 64th minute and Laura Ball could only steer the rebound into Amanda Hubbard’s grateful arms.
Ball hit the crossbar in the closing stages and although the ball appeared to bounce over the line and back out, it was not awarded as a goal.
Spitfires Under 16s secured a 4-0 win over Trowbridge Wanderers.
Spits made the breakthrough on 24 minutes when Gabby Bickell found Shannon Kinsella, who slotted home.
Cheyenne Clark rolled home soon after after Hayley Shipp’s shot was parried into her path.
After the break Shipp crossed for Emma Adams to make it 3-0, and right on the final whistle Kinsella completed her brace.
Danni Granato scored a consolation goal for Spitfires under 14s as they lost 6-1 to Oxford.
The under 11s secured a place in the Wiltshire League cup final after winning 5-0 against Westbury Youth.
