Skipper happy to be back in the middle

Alan McCormack Alan McCormack

CAPTAIN Alan McCormack admitted he is happy to be back in his natural central midfield position, but remains willing to play anywhere to make it into new manager Kevin MacDonald’s side.

Former boss Paolo Di Canio told the Irishman he would not feature again in the middle of the park after converting him into a central defender during his early days at Swindon, but McCormack reverted back to his former position in MacDonald’s first game in charge as Town dramatically won away at Coventry.

The Town skipper impressed alongside Tommy Miller, and although MacDonald has yet to spell out where he sees his captain playing long-term, he admitted he was pleased to be back in a familiar position.

“We haven’t had a chat yet or anything like that, although obviously we talked about what he wanted me to do on Saturday, but there have been no one-on-ones yet,” he said.

“If I have to play right back, left back, centre half, centre mid I don’t really mind, I will try and give everything I’ve got when I’m on the pitch.

“In midfield you are constantly turning and facing the play and involved in attack and defence, and it’s a position that when you do well in it it’s very rewarding because you are passing, tackling heading and making goals.

“It was nice to be back in there, and if the manager asks me to play there again that’s up to him and I can only show him what I can do on the training pitch.

“It’s hard for the manager because he has come in to 20 or 25 players and he has to find out their best position, whether that’s right-footers playing in the left, left-footers on the right or centre halves playing at centre mid or the opposite. Even Wes, maybe he is a different position really.

“But that’s up to the manager, so let’s see what he comes up with.”

McCormack admitted there has been a slight change of routine under MacDonald, with the usual hard running Monday sessions replaced by skill-based work.

“It’s a lot different because on Mondays we are used to doing a lot of running and tactical shape, but we came in and did a light warm-up, a keep-ball session and some fun and games to get everyone smiling again after a day off before training begins again,” he said.

“It was still hard work, and there was a lot of keeping the ball and passing the ball and that was something we need that little extra 10 per cent of sharpness.

“We are very fit, and we have a lot to thank the old manager and the old staff for for that, but it’s just a matter of building up the sharpness for the rest of the run-in.”

So if mac is going to play in midfield that means that Navarro is going to have to find a new place in the team, we need ferry back in the middle as he is our most creative player, Ferry on saturday was wasted on the wing, but hey ho thats my opinion.

Agree - I think the most natural pairing in the middle should be Macca and Ferry....so glad he's being played back there now as Devera and Flint in behind him and McEvs and Thommo outside means we have an even stronger defensive unit than before.
...
.....and we all know how dangerous Macca is going forwards so this gives him more licence to cause mayhem with his runs.

when I saw the team selected saturday I thought it was a 5 man midfield line-up of Robbo, Ferry, Miller, Macca & de Vita, so I was surprised to hear Ferry was out wide, so where did the odd man out play.

I think Devita came on as a sub, didn't he?

Yes !

I'm a little concerned that maybe our fitness levels may drop with this new training regime, hope I'm wrong.

Stillloyal - i agree Paolo set a high standard on fitness and it shows when we play other teams our fitness levels as Coventry found out at the weekend.

I hope the new management team keep up this level of fitness but this time of the season alot of the training you just need to tick over without putting the players through intensive sessions as the games start building up again now with easter coming.

Pre-season i hope Ward and Miller have given KM an insight into what Paolo instilled into the players as we dont want the likes of Ferry back to being barrell chested again as he looks the fittest he has ever been and that is down to Paolo.

Bit of balance required maybe, fitness is obviously important but I liked hearing Macca talk about skills training rather than just fitness - no use being able to run around for 90 minutes if you do so in the style of a headless chicken. You should always make the ball do the work where possible, and we did that well on Saturday with good periods of passing - lacked the quality of final ball at times and hopefully that's one area that can be improved upon.

So on Saturday if results go our way we could go back to the Top second.

From some of the comments on here by players it seems the fear factor has disappeared from their play and maybe that is why a few players have not performed as they feel they personally can do due to fear and being dropped from the side.
Confidence is a major factor in football and playing with fear is bound to effect your game and i get the felling KM wants them to express theirselves on the pitch and play with confidence.

Techical ability is a key so perhaps the change in ball skills will benefit the players as well as the likes of Arsenal always concentrate on ball skills.

Ferry has to be first choice in centre midfield. Alan Mc would be ahead of Miller in my estimation but it would mean we would be short of height in the middle. We could do with a fast zippy winger - other than Williams we lack pace.

I like everything our new management team are doing. Very positive start and so impressed with their attendance at the youth team game and interest in the youngsters. Paul Bodin will be delighted.
