Murdy glad of increased game time

WILDCATS netminder Tom Murdy has spoken of his delight at getting more ice time recently.

The former Coventry man was a regular in the line-up last season but has spent the majority of this campaign as second-choice behind Dean Skinns.

However, of late head coach Ryan Aldridge has been inclined to give both match action, with Murdy playing a key role in Sunday’s penalty shots win over Slough at the Hangar.

And naturally the Whitley Bay-born netminder is enjoying playing his part as Swindon attempt to secure their place in the EPL play-offs.

“It’s nice for me to have some game time,” he said.

“Skinnsy is having a good year and I’ve just got to support him. He’s playing well and I’m happy to play when I get in net.

“I wouldn’t say I’ve been a victim of his form, he’s part of the team and I just go with it.”

Murdy’s performance against Slough was an important component of victory, Swindon’s first in overtime this season.

Wildcats had previously made 10 failed attempts to win matches that went beyond the regulation 60 minutes.

D-man Joe Baird was pleased that he and his teammates had finally broken their duck, and was confident that they would have the mental strength to do it again if placed in the same situation.

“We came with a gameplan and executed it, and although it was tight we got the points and we’re happy with that,” said Baird.

“We haven’t been able to win games in overtime but against Slough we stuck with the gameplan and finally got one.

“It just shows that we can take points in overtime, so hopefully we won’t panic too much if we go there again.”
