GIRLS' FOOTBALL: Spitfires see off Carteron

SWINDON Spitfires Under 13s moved to within a point of leaders Kidlington with a comprehensive 6-0 win at Carterton Town in the Oxford Girls League.

Ellie Scott bagged four goals for Spitfires to secure the victory, with Katie Donovan and Natalie Goodright completing the scorers.

Meanwhile in the Wiltshire Girls League, midtable Spitfires Under 16s put in one of their best performances of the season before succumbing 2-1 to second-placed Frome Town. Playing up the hill in the first half, Spitfires defended resolutely but comfortably and looked a threat on the break.

Frome snatched the lead from a corner after some slack defending allowed an unopposed shot at the far post after 27 minutes, but their lead lasted just three minutes as Georgia Coward found Niamh Montague who slotted the ball through for Shannon Kinsella to strongly hold off her marker and finish well.

Spitfires exerted a lot more pressure in the second half and were unlucky not to go ahead, as Emma Adams’ shot clipped the far post on 55 minutes.

Frome were always dangerous, and they saw a shot come back off the upright on 63 minutes, but when they took the lead once again from a corner with 20 minutes to go it was somewhat against the run of play.

Spitfires had a glorious chance to get a well-deserved equaliser seven minutes from time when Mya McKnight was upended in the box, but Kelsey Deacon put the resultant penalty wide.
