Howell won't look back in anger at Avantha Masters

DAVID Howell won’t be paying any attention to his previous record in India at the Avantha Masters.

The Broome Manor man tees off from the 10th at 1.30am British time this morning alongside Mithun Perera and Boonchu Ruangkit, and will be looking to improve on his previous visits to India having failed to finish in the top 20 on any of his five previous attempts.

The event has now moved to a new course at Jaypee Greens, and Howell won’t be letting his previous form worry him when he gets under way.

“It’s a different course and that makes a big difference in it all,” he said.

“What you have done in the past doesn’t come into it, although sometimes you are aware whether you played particularly well or poorly at an individual course.

“All that being said, I quite liked the old course we used to play on, although my results weren’t great on it, and sometimes it all just doesn’t match up.

“I may not have done brilliantly in India, but I won’t be looking at it like that.”

The Jaypee Greens course is set to be a new experience for the majority of the field, but Howell has been impressed with what he has seen.

“I played the pro-am and it was nice, and it will be a new experience for most of the field although some of the Indian players have had a go on it,” he said.

“They are touting it as India’s longest course, but it’s not overly daunting. The back nine has plenty of water on it, and there are some reachable par fives so it’s a good course.

“It’s not the most difficult course I have ever seen, but it is very fair and you can put a score on it so it should be a good competitive week.”

Howell goes into the event on the back of a week off spent at home in Dubai, but he returns to business in a confident mood.

“I’m playing well and in a really good run of form, and I have pulled apart a few departments of my game and that will stand me in good stead,” he said.

“My confidence and belief is building by the week, but I’m far from being complacent about it all and I don’t want to say I’m expecting a good week, but if I keep playing as I have been then a good result will come.

“It is going to be a good week of golf, and I will set off looking to be challenging with the leaders come the end of it.”
