SOUTHERN LEAGUE: Webb focused on second

SUPERMARINE boss Dave Webb has first and foremost got his sights set on second place rather than top spot ahead of the visit of Division One South & West leaders Poole on Saturday.

Marine are sitting third in the table and play the Dolphins twice inside 11 days in clashes that are sure to play a significant role in identifying the 2012/13 league winners.

However, Webb says that his primary focus is on overhauling second-placed Hungerford first to ensure home advantage in the play-off semi-final and subsequently the final, should his team get there.

“If we win our two games in hand then we'll be four points behind, but if we win our games in hand and beat Poole on Saturday we will only be one point behind,” said Webb.

“We've got to play them twice and sandwiched between the two is the unenviable task of North Leigh, who have run into some form, and then Yate next Saturday.

“We're keeping our feet firmly on the ground. Even if it goes well Saturday that doesn't mean anything really.

“We aren't capable of catching Poole at the moment but what we can do is get up towards Hungerford, that's our next target.

“If we overtake them it gives us a big advantage in the play-offs with home draws in both second legs, if we get through the semi-final.

“I believe that's a massive advantage to finish in the top two, you'd rather be playing at you're own place and in front of your own fans in games of such magnitude.

“Forget about Poole, that will take care of itself, at this moment in time our target is to get as near to Hungerford as we can.”

Webb has urged his players to pay with a smile on their faces at the Webb's Wood Stadium tomorrow in what he believes will be a terrific contest.

He said: “It's a big game, we all know the importance of it. Saying that I think it's a game we can go into and enjoy.

“We're desperate to reel in the teams above us and six straight wins has certainly helped us.

“The players are looking forward to it and are quite relaxed. It should be an absolute cracker.”

Marine have concerns over centre-back Craig Curtis, who is doubtful with an ankle problem, while midfielder Harry Etheridge serves the final game of his suspension.

Meanwhile, Marine's Division One South & West rivals Sholing yesterday announced their decision to resign from the Southern League at the end of the season, due to financial reasons.
