Rooney: I can score from anywhere

Adam Rooney Adam Rooney

ADAM Rooney is convinced he is capable of scoring goals regardless of what position manager Kevin MacDonald uses him in between now and the end of the season.

The Irishman was deployed wide on the right as Town went with a five-man midfield for the defeat at Brentford on Tuesday night, having returned to a central striking role in recent weeks as an alternative to James Collins.

Rooney was a regular lone forward while he was with Inverness in Scotland, and has played wide for Town on a number of occasions since joining from Birmingham, and is confident he is capable of finding the net regardless of where his new manager plays him.

“I played as a lone striker while I was at Inverness for two years at the head of it, and I know the formation well but never played out on the wing in it,” he said.

“I’ve played out there quite a bit this year, and I just want to play anywhere as long as I am on the pitch helping the team.

“I filled in there a bit for Chesterfield, but I’m an out and out striker and I need to work on getting back to help the full-back out a bit.

“As a striker you have a natural instinct to get in at the back post, and it’s a matter of helping the team out and I don’t mind where I play.

“I’m always capable of getting goals be it if I’m on the wing or up front, and when I’m on the pitch I have a good goals to minutes ratio.”

Rooney returns to one of his former clubs tomorrow when Town travel to fellow promotion chasers Yeovil, and although the Dubliner didn’t feature much during his loan spell in 2007, he insisted he learnt plenty while with the Glovers.

“Russell Slade was the manager when I was at Yeovil, and I was there for two months and played a couple of games, I had one start and I think that was on the wing,” he said.

“I enjoyed my time there although I was only young, but it was good experience for me even though I only played 90 minutes in total in the whole time I was there.

“There’s a decent atmosphere in the ground and they are going well at the moment, but we just have to focus on what we’re doing.”

The game in Somerset is the latest in a long line of away matches against teams in and around the play-off places, but Rooney insisted Town should have no fear of a daunting run which also includes trips to Sheffield United and Doncaster.

“All season we have done quite well and we haven’t really had a spell where we have lost games or failed to win, although we had a bit of sticky patch back in October,” he said.

“Walsall getting a draw and Brentford was disappointing, but we are well capable of winning the last nine games and we know as a squad we can go out and win every game.

“We have to stick together and then when we get the home games we get the fans behind us and they have been great all season.”

The 451 worked extremely well at Brentford for 70 odd mins - so think we should stick with it at Yeovil
.
Though I would swap Rooney and Williams
.
Rooney is not a natural winger meaning we lost out on break down the right
.
Williams is also not a striker so the ball never stuck up top
.
Swapping them over could allow us to hold the ball up and then break at speed as we would have both Williams and Roberts supporting Rooney from wide positions
.
Plus Rooney would then be central to get on the end of crosses from open play - not just set pieces

You really expect the FL to review final documentation, sign it off, lift it, communicate that to the club who then communicate to the media in 17 minutes?

I agree London Red, 17 minutes is nowhere near enough time to lift an embargo.

That said, I bet it didn't take them much longer to impose it.

Agree, I have been banging on about Willo not being a central stiker since the first time I saw him.
Out wide is where he does his best work.
Also, if not 4-5-1 then how about 4-4-2 with A Rooney and Rafa in the striker postions, both have a degree of natural goalscorer about them.
Back in November/December against Sheff U & Donny we created so many chances but had no one with any predatory instinct to get on the end of them.
Collo as an impact sub if required and L Rooney as a wide man if required.
Also, how about L Rooney in the 'Messi role'? Just a thought.
PS: Loved the thread on Saturday, very funny.

I've had another reply from the Football League. Although they can't tell us the reasons for the embargo, the wording used leads me to believe strongly that it has nothing to do with outstanding payments but in fact relates to a breach of the regulation concerning provision of financial information required by the League.

With apologies top Steve and others, but I hope this post will be seen as non-repetition!

This is just a guess - but isn't the 65% limit forecast required to be submitted monthly for the FL to determine if new signings are allowed
.
Maybe due to the boardroom changes our latest one(s) have not been submitted and the football league have therefore, required a new forcast to be submitted prior to the embargo being lifted
.
Especially if equity changes have occured!
.
This could have been "unseen issue" by the new board who thought this was up-to-date as NW etc were still in place
.
They could have therefore, been producing this forecast over the last week and submitted it to the FL on Thursday/Friday
.
We now need the FL to review this and once satisfied - they can lift the embargo - which is what Jed could be chasing up

Looking beyond the embargo to better times when players can come in. Anything in addition I would see as a bonus and be very grateful for it, perhaps another mid fielder.

I attended the Q&A session held in the Legends before the Walsall game and the question was put to Steve Murrell directly as to why we were/are still under embargo seeing as the takeover was ratified. Murrell stated, categorically, that it had nothing do with outstanding payments to other clubs, i.e. Shrewsbury, they had all been paid, but was because when they took the club over the FL made the new board allocate 1.2 Million in a "ring-fenced" account as security going forward. He stated that this wasn't a problem for the new board but it took some time to pull the money together. He did go on to say that he expected the embargo to be lifted by Tuesday (the Brentford game) so not sure what the hold up is but going by what he said on at the Q&A, I would have thought it is to do with the 1.2m that they had to pull together, perhaps the FL are not satisfied yet or there are other conditions that they haven't met that he didn't allude to at the Q&A.

I Think if he was able to be open and honest about the 1.2m at the Q&A, I don't see why they can't release a further statement advising of the reason for a further delay.

I agree with Danioool. I would suspect that the new Board have not provided proof of the £1.2m fund that the FL required, and until they do, the embargo remains.

I also have to say that the new board seem very reticent to communicate with the fan base. Sometimes it is better to tell someone you have nothing to tell them, rather than to not say anything at all. It avoids speculation and shows they care about the fans.

And, if it is because the £1.2 million has not yet been provided, what hope is there for any meaningful investment for our promotion push, either this season, or next??

The silence is making me nervous...

In Sat's article it clearly said an "unseen issue" had prevented the embargo being lifted - so I very much doubt the £1.2m is that as that was clearly a seen issue!
.
The £1.2m was resolved last week and it was the new item which delayed over the last week
.
Jed was asked yesterday what this issue was - and he said I would like to say but sometimes it is better things are left unsaid
.
Now maybe the board don't want all the clubs affiars out in the public demain for whatever reason (ie its a legal matter) and sometimes we as fans will have to just accept that
.
No business disclose everything and simply being a football club shouldn't change that
.
Sam has said that the club have provided the FL with ALL the information they have asked for and are now waiting for the FL
.
We will just have to wait it out as it is now clearly out of the clubs hands and with the FL

.
There was a Q&A prior to Walsall - where the board were open and honest about unpaid fees, Fabio's non payment and the £1.2m insurance fund
.
An update article on the embargo was printed in the Adver on Saturday as to why it was not lifted during the week as expected
.
So how are the board not communicating?
.
Should there be an update on official twitter page or facebook status update on the hour every hours - saying - no update still with the FL?????

The take over has been ratified so no 10 point deduction or administration,

We have been told all the loans have been paid off, so it can only mean the 65% wage cap. Remember AB was bankrolling the club, if the new owners are not putting extra cash in even without Ritchie's wages I imagine we are near or over the 65%.

If that is the case, the new owners maybe raising so more money to take us out of the embargo, just like AB did last year when PdC through his toys out of the pram. That will take time.

LR, one man's interpretation of ALL the information may not be the same as another's. Sam can only say what he has been told. I doubt very much that anyone has explained to him what the club was asked to provide to the Football League and what it did provide. If he had that information, I'm sure he would have reported it. The club have told him they've provided all the required information. Well, if the League agree that's the case, no doubt we'll hear very soon that the embargo has been lifted. If not, we'll all be left to carry on drawing our own conclusions. Some people will say it's just the League dragging their feet. Others may wonder whether the club has indeed provided ALL the information.

Have to say I agree LR, we can't have it both ways - some seem to be asking for the club to speak even if it's to say nothing at all, and also criticising the press releases when there's nothing further to report. Think the case at the moment is that they're working to get the embargo lifted, and we'll know as soon as it is. Not sure what more the club can do than that. Remember it's the FL that have to lift it, all the club can do is try to fulfill the FL's requirements as soon as they're able. I can appreciate the frustration but some on here seem to think a magic wand was going to be waived by the new owners making everything ok overnight, and obviously it's not that straightforward.

Den - granted Sam can only report what he has been informed
.
So really the question is do you believe the new board have any integrity or not?
.
If you do not beleive all info has been provided as reported then you are basically saying they are telling lies
.
I personally think they have provided all that has been requested - but that may not be enough to satifsy the FL (for whatever reason) and therefore, more info was/is required
.
Its a bit like moving house when you think you have provided everything to your solicitor and then another request comes in and you then have to provide something else on top and that elusive exchange date seems to keep moving

Wow what a relief. Everythings all back on track now.

Embargo lifted last week, the 3 new signings have slitted into the team efortlessly and a cracking win against Notts C to boot. Home form back on track. That and the mid-week win against Yeovil. Just brilliant.

We're 2nd, just 2 points behind Donny. Oldham on Friday, Donny on 1st Apr. Win them and we're clear at the top. Everything just all falling into place.

interesting, could the financial info be evidence that they have raised the £1.2m? my guess is still that the "unforeseen issues" are difficulties they are having in raising it.

meanwhile there are season tickets to sell to raise much needed cashflow, so expect the highly confident statements about the embargo to keep on coming.

None of us can hurry it up as much as I,d like it to be lifted now it won't. Till then we get on with it, and keep showing the immense support. Again no offence to anyone. I expected Murrall to at least have the ballls to come on here later today and explain to the fans why the embargo never got lifted or is there something more sinister in all this and they would rather keep it quiet. Something smells and I think this situation is very damaging. How on earth they expect fans to commit to new season tickets in this moment in time is beyond me and probably why there is no info coming out of the club or if it does its complete bullshiit. I think we will have to see the season out with what we've got but worry what lays ahead.

Absolutely glasred it stinks and I get the feeling their backers or backer has defaulted on them and now they are in the brown stuff. It seems the issue is the 1.2 million, and I am getting a horrible feeling the "A" word is around the corner but hope I am wrong. Its alright fans saying leave them alone and let them run the club but this last 3 weeks have caused no end of confusion and without information this leads to speculation running riot. Run the club may be one thing but have they bitten off too much I wonder.
